Tyre Sizes for my '99 MK Triton

Unread post by Duke1340 » November 20th, 2014, 9:51 am

Hi guys,
I'm new to the forum, and have a couple of quick questions about my ride, what are the tallest tyres I can fit to my standard 15" triton rims, would I need wider rims to run 32" mud tyres.
Thanks.

Short answer is yes mate. To run 32's on your triton (unsure of your rim offset) you want a offset of around 0 - neg14. Any deeper you will have to flatten the bump in the wheel well in the front and trim the skirt on your standard alloy bar, assuming this is what you have. Dismiss this you have an aftermarket (think arb) bar. You will need to jack up tge torsions a bit as well. All this is assuming you want to run 32x11.5 15's. You may be able to get narrower tyres in 32's but choice is limited to a few brands. I did a lot of work/dicking about/trial n error to get the 32's on neg 25 cruiser sunnies under mine without body lift and dangerous height on my mk - not something for the uninitiated. Tried and true method is to get some 16x7 sunnies on previous mentioned offset and fit 265x75r16 tyres. Easy fit with little or no modding required. I am glad i did the work to get the 32" bighorns under mine - once i do the body lift it gives me scope for 33's. Any questions just ask more than happy to help.

Btw, Welcome to the forum :)

Thanks Boof, that helps a lot, I'll look at going up to 16" rims as you suggested.

Cheers

Much larger range of tyres to in that size too - and probably more readily available even in remote locations than the 15" variants now too. Talk to your local tyreman - if he is a bit old school and knows his stuff, he should be able to tailor something to suit what your after.

Only too happy to help. Any more q's just ask. :)

Hi Boof MK Triton

I am finally getting around to fitting new wheels and tyres now that the original set are getting close to "use by" date. My Simpson Desert trip used up what was left on them.

I'm going to go with your suggestion of 265/75/R16 as there seems to be a great range to choose from.

A local supplier has 16" x 8" steel rims available in 0, -13, and -22 offset, which would you recommend for my MK.

Thanks for your time

Cheers

Sorry for the late reply mate, hope it gets you in time. Yeah 0 or -13 is pretty safe. I have -25 on mine - took some getting under there, but i found it worth it. The other two are bolt in and go. GU patrol rims are a cheap option if you decide new sunnies arent in order.

Cheers buddy.

Thanks Boof for the reply.
Yes it did come in time, I'm still saving the $$ needed for the six new wheels and six new tyres.
I checked out your trailer build link, looks good mate, I've been thinking of doing something similar, can't wait to see some more pics when you get back into the project.

Cheers

Cheers mate, hoping to get back into it again very soon. Work is a pain when it gets in the road of fun isnt it???? But soon the trailer will be on its way out to work to get blasted and then i can paint it and get stuck into a few more trips after I mount the tent.

Sorry for the late reply, havent been on in a while, as to answer your question, from memory it was 0 to get your 265's inline with the stock gls flares. Find a mate with a series one GU with same size tyres on standard rims and trial fit one just to be sure - i got a funny feeling they were -10 or something so being only 10mm different in offset that oughta give you a bit of an idea.
