Planning a BJ 40 4 speed to 5 speed conversion

Unread post by boris1969 » May 15th, 2018, 2:12 pm

Hi Folks

I am new to the site and Toyota 4WDs so forgive me for any silly comments. I have just purchased a 1979 BJ40 running a 60 series 4.0l diesel motor, power steering, disc brakes etc. But it also has a 4 speed gearbox.
As I plan to travel a bit in it I wanted to know the best way to convert it to a 5 speed. I have searched information about converting the 4 spd to a 5 spd which is achievable according to some forums with a bit of mucking around swapping shafts and bearings etc and also the handbrake can be an issue? The owner told me I could simply bolt a 60 series 5 spd straight into it which sounds like the way to go to me. Is this the case or is it too good to be true?

Thanks in advance.
