Any fixes for a Stripped thread on HJ60 caliper mount?

Unread post by dingocountry » June 28th, 2016, 5:33 pm

Hi people, just finished rebuilding my hubs and brakes on HJ60 and found stripped thread in hub where caliper bolts on. Any ideas. I was thinking heli-coil. Would it be strong enough for this application? Any input greatly appreciated, thanks.

I wouldn't trust a helicoil on a brake caliper.

I'm pretty sure that bolt is M14. I'd drill it out and tap a thread for a high tensile M16 bolt.

If you're not confident in doing something like that I'd recommend calling someone like the Thread Doctor.

Brake caliper bolts are under shear loading, not tensile, so essentially all that bolt is doing is holding the caliper in place. The braking forces are acting against the sides of the bolt.

fitting a helicoil would be ok, or if room allows, completely drill out the buggered thread and fit a longer bolt and nut to hold it all together

Calipers are brand new so I am reluctant to go M16 as I would have to drill out hole in caliper. No clearance to fit nut behind. Thanks for the input so far. Keep the good ideas coming!

Thanks for the input. Went with a powercoil for practical reasons. Will let you know if it fails.

I would have no issue with a helicoil.

I have replaced them where they are standard fitment inside jet engines and on safety critical aluminium components.

The thread is often times stronger than the thread cut in the parent metal (particularly into aluminium) and you can get specialist inserts that have a deformed section in the middle so they are vibration resistant.

Just used a standard helicoil but i am confident it will hold. Didn't think of vibration at the time. Fingers crossed.

The locking thread ones are a pain in the arse to install and would be overkill for that job. As long as it is torqued up correctly, then it should be fine.
