60 series L/c - whining noise from gearbox - any ideas?

Unread post by THE GHOST » January 23rd, 2016, 8:52 pm

G'day all

The 60 series has 1hd 4.2lt turbo diesel with water intercooler, 3 inch mandrel bent, snorkel.
It is running a 5 speed 60 box with reduction gears low and a higher ratio for high range.

Noise starts around 1500 rpm and increases with revs.

Only under load does it whin like your wife after you get home from the pub earlier morning drunk.
Push clutch in at any speed noise stops
Back off the throttle and the noise stops.

Help
Help
I'm not a mechanic, so any help would be great.
Cheers

What is the oil like? dirty, metal, water? Does it whine louder in low/higher gears, any gear it doesn't whine in (like 4th)?
Does the lever jerk forward/ back when you back off and on the throttle in gear? any trouble changing gears? This info will help to narrow it down a bit.

Oil looks fine, same sound in all gears.
Changes gears fine, just developed a clicking noise like a bit of tin stuck in push bike spoke. It also stops once you engage clutch

OK, this is similar to another gearbox thread on here recently.
You said: Push clutch in at any speed noise stops .
the bearings which stop turning when you do this are spigot bearing, main input bearing, layshaft bearings.
The clicking noise stops when you engage the clutch: (That is, you let out the clutch) - - meaning, when you have your foot on the clutch, it makes a clicking sound - - - - would indicate a clutch/ input shaft issue.
Have you considered jacking it up on stands, & running it while listening from outside to see if you can determine exactly where the noise is coming from?
