240v ac makes a fluoro go on and off 50 times a second. A white spot on your crank shaft will be going past at 50 times a second when the engine is revving at exactly 3000rpm.

IMO An easy mistake but a fluoro light actually fires 100 times a second i.e. on each half of the 50Hz cycle so it will make the crank pulley appear stopped at 6000 rpm but every second flash will indicate 3000 rpm nicely. The strobe effect will also be noticeable at 2000 rpm, every third and 1500 rpm, every fourth flash etc. So be careful you are checking the tacho on the right number of pulses.

Yes, I agree. If with an 80 series you have to judge that you are near approx 3000rpm so the second flashes will do the job. Haven't heard an 80 at 6000rpm I wonder what they sound like up there. Ha Ha.

I'm going to try a Bright LED torch running on a power pack so one 1/2 of the sine is cut out and the 3000 should be able to be detected that way.

You can also put a diode in series with the mains supply to your fluoro light and that will make it only fire on every half cycle. I saw this suggested as a fluoro light dimmer in one of the electronics mags that is now defunct and tried it once but I was not impressed with the result for that application. The led torch sounds like it would do the trick just nicely though.

If you want to test a 1HZ at 6000 rpm please let me know first and I'll hunker down in a bunker and I don't think I would have to cower there too long, you may have to fiddle the injector pump a bit first though just remove the throttle stop screw completely as a starting point?

I was not meaning to criticize you either, just wanting to make sure it was right for the sake of being accurate as it was an easy mistake and 1 I've made before.

When my troopy was std it did 2400rpm at 100KPH(1HZ 91 model) Fellow members in my club had both 91 1HZ NA and Factory turbo 80S cruisers. On many occaisions we would ask each other on the UHF what speed and RPM we were doing. Both vehicles with 285/75 (33s) were doing the same as my STD troopy (750/16) which tells me that 80/s Toyotas were given a lower gearing to make them appear to have more get up and go than there commercial counterparts.Meaning Troopies and Utes.
