rattling noise when in neutral, clutch out

Unread post by onabuzz » April 6th, 2011, 9:52 pm

Hi all,

ive been searching but cant seem to get an answer as every ones rattle occurs when their clutch is in.

When my 98 hilux sr5 is idling in neutral, there is a rattle sound coming from the gearbox. can anyone advise which bearing this may be coming from.

Note: when i press the clutch in, the sound goes away.

thanks for your help.

Possibly your thrust bearing.... How far do you have to push the clutch in before it goes away?

Sounds like the bearing had the same issue on previous vehicles if you are going to replace it might as well check everything out. Budget for a new clutch and machined flywheel.

Alot of manuals have some noise and usually more with the foot off the clutch, I've just had a new clutch kit fitted to my jack 2-3 months ago and obvious it's the thrust bearing I can hear spinning, my delta does it too and the clutch is about 11-12 years old and has allways made some noise. did yours just start making the noise and does your clutch slip?

the noise started out soft and progressivly got louder.. sounds like a bearing thats lost half its balls. clutch doesnt slip at all.. only thing i can think of is water damaged the thrust when i went through some big puddles?

Try and make a cradle for the box to sit in on top of the jack and a trolley jack is nearly a must have otherwise pain to move and you will have to move it back to get the shaft to disengage. Taking time to make a good cradle for it to sit in will make life a lot easier. Don't forget you will need a dummy shaft or tool to get clutch all lined up before install. Set it all up before hand otherwise you will be cursing and swearing.

Getting the box out is easy. Gravity plays a big part. It's getting it back in and lining every thing back up!!! I had a squeak in the clutch at idle when I finally pulled the box out I only had to replace the thrust bearing and the 80,000 km clutch was fine with hardly any wear so it went back in and is still fine and the squeak gone.

Generally speaking the thrust bearing will be noisey when the clutch pedal is fully depressed not when the clutch pedal is realeased.

What you are prob hearing is a rollover noise from the gearbox as teh clutch is engaged it is turning the shaft in the gearbox, fairly common on when the gearbox has a few k's on it

Try changing your gearbox oil before you pull the box out if it improves the nois then i wouldnt stress too much about it :)

The thrust bearing I'm talking about is also called the clutch throw out bearing not the spigot bearing.

it will be the springs on the clutch plate its quite common cause the tops of the rivots wear away and makes the springs become loose.if one falls out it will just rattle around in the bell housing which is very loud but its a good indication that its worn but u will still get a few thousand ks out of it.
