What's wrong with this fish?

Where are they biting? How big was the one you caught?

What's wrong with this fish?

Unread post by juzzbott » January 6th, 2015, 7:22 am

Hi All,

Just got back from a fishing trip along the big river where it meets Lake Eildon... Didn't catch anything except for carp, which seems to be all I catch :p

Anyways, I caught this guy with some weird scales or disorder or something and I just wanted to know what it may be... I'm assuming it's some sort of disease, but just after some clarification please :)

Cheers,
Justin

Seen this question elswhere

May not be a disease , just a genetic variation

A medium sized fish with a forked tail.
Maximum 1200 mm and 60 kg; usually up
to 4–5 kg. The mouth is of moderate size,
with thick fleshy lips and two pairs of barbels
(‘whiskers’) at the corners. The single long,
low dorsal fin has a stout serrated spine at the
front. The scales are large and thick. Some
individuals are only partly scaled, with very
large scales in three or four rows (‘mirror
carp’), and some have no scales (‘leather
carp’).
The back is usually olive-green, silvery-
grey or brownish and the belly a creamy or
silvery-yellow.

Given the way the things breed I suppose genetic variation is inevitable

Its a mirror carp. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mirror_carp
Its a genetic mutation that was supposedly bread into them hundreds of years ago I believe.

Hi All,

Thanks for the reply... Was a little stumped as to why it was like that, but glad to know it's not some sort of infectious disease or anything in the water :)

Cheers,
Justin
