Our Simpson Trip July 27 to Aug 01 - Very very Wet

Unread post by Barra-2 » August 25th, 2010, 3:49 pm

Just read the story in Camping with your 4WD No 8 about the Simpson in Flood, so thought I's share some of our photos.

Tracking from our GPS, Campsites and cache markers

Lots of tracks like this
Image

Storm Clouds are brewing and we are driving straight into it.
Image
Image
Image

Setup camp in the rain on the Colson track. We had a spectacular lighting show all around us that night.
Image
Collected 18 litres of water off the annexe the 2nd night.
Image

Rainbows the next morning
Image

The tracks in front of us the next morning.
Image

The lakes
Image
Image

Woops that was a big puddle
Image
Image

My alternator stopped working after this puddle, 4 days from Birdsville.
Image

Then I had to help the 200 series out of Lake Thomas
Image
Image

Lake Poeppel claimed the 79 series that was with us too.

The Lone Gum Tree on it's Island

Eyre Creek Crossing was easy, but the bank was a bit slippery

One of the last battery change overs that got me into Birdsville. We had this down to pit lane speed by now.

On top of Big Red, made it up both sides..

We wondered if they were closed as well, and found out they were when we got to Birdsville.

When we left Mt Dare there was no mention of this weather coming, then we spent the day and night at Dalhousie Springs and left early the next morning (Perfect weather). The storms we watched from the Colson track that night ravaged Dalhousie Springs and apparently closed the tracks then, so we were oblivious to what to was going on behinds us.

Our concerns were how we were going to get threw the mud each morning, with 4 out of the 5 nights with pouring with rain..:(

All I can say is we did it completely different from many others, and will remember it like this forever :thumb:. And had great time getting through as a team, and still grinning now.

We also hit the Birdsville track 2 hours after it was opened and it was nearly as bad all the way to Mungeraine.

Cheers :)

More random photos

The sand dunes were so easy to go over, you have a choice of hard or easy, we took the hard one every dune.

A close call for the tyre and this ended up as a extra firewood.

The water was flowing under our campsite.

Where's the Desert?
Image

This was the campsite after the 200 series got bogged, you can see the shadecloth strips I used to help get him out.
Image

Waynes 79 had the exhaust upgrade, and geez it sounded great with the V8
Image

We worked out it was always best to go through the centre, as the tracks base was firm and solid from all the traffic

Image

This the 200 bogged and sitting on the chassis, took a while to get him out. First the car, then the trailer.. I nearly did a reverse snatch, the remembered something about thats not good for a 100 series
Image

Laying down the shadecloth to help him out once we get going after a snatch.

Camped near Eyre Creek, and the first night without rain and we could see the stars for the first time.

Looks like they will take your trailer across the Cooper Creek ferry, because of the length restrictions,

Thats correct gruesom.

We hadn't planned on coming home on the Birdsville track, because the ferry was not permitted to have trailers on it. But a local called Peter setup his truck and took trailers across for $50. It saved us about a 1000k's.

So spread the word :D
