ATF - Which one?

Unread post by Taxman » December 17th, 2009, 9:23 pm

I had the transmission in my 96 LTD serviced by a mechanic I had been using for yonks. We discussed that it had to use Mercon V - he agreed. Four days later about a mild from home I lost drive. Waited for it to cool down and limped home.

Rang the mechanic - no answer, walked around, his place was locked up tight as and he hasn't come back. Nobody knows where he has gone - not even his wife.

It has been suggested that he probably used whatever ATF he had left before he did the bolt. It has been suggested that if I drain the ATF he put in and replace it with the correct stuff it may fix the problem (I hope).

I rang the local Ford Dealer his spare parts dept said they only sell it by the one litre bottle, its 'bloody' expensive and they don't have any in stock, they would have to order it in take a week or two and will cost over $300 (he thinks).

The Questions:-
1. Is it possible that by replacing the ATF with the right fluid is it likely to fix the problem?
2. Does Castrol or any other oil manufacturer make a suitable replacement?
3. Is it a mineral or synthetic oil or does it matter?

Thanks in advance

Peter
