Best knot for trying winch rope on??

Unread post by Mino » October 5th, 2011, 5:21 pm

Was just wondering if you guys/gals have any good ideas or suggestions on what knot to use to try on my winch rope.

Was out in the mud and it pulled out of the crimp. Thinking of tying it back on instead of recrimping it..

Any ideas would be great.

thanks

Chris

If you are using the winch correctly, it shouldn't matter. The strength in the knot should do nothing anyway - the winch works on having enough friction from several wraps of rope around the spool to not slip and unwind.

my suggestion would be to recrimp it, then not use the last layer on the drum when you are winching out of a bog.....the friction between the rope and the drum will limit the amount of slip, and therefore reduce the load on the crimp....

Which end did the crimp pull out of?? If it was the drum end then you shouldn't have been winching with that much rope out!! You should make sure that you always leave at least 5 full turns of rope (or cable) on the drum when you are winching, it will take at least that much to maintain the rating of the pull, as you found out. So like cac says, recrimp it, refit it, and never use the last layer of rope on the drum!!

If it was the hook end, you can use a bowline to secure the hook (but if you ever want to take it off you'll probly hafta cut it!) or better yet, splice the rope into an eye around the loop on the end of the hook. The latest Custom Guide mag shows you how to loop & splice rope to do that, and most of the rope supplier websites (like Dynamica etc) have a diagram to show how to do it too.

I reckon a shop that sells winches and winch accessories mate. If they don't have it, they should be able to order one in.

They're merged now - please remember people, 1 subject, 1 Section, 1 thread!

Duplicating threads makes it LESS likely you'll ever get the full answer in one place; makes searching really difficult; and tends to annoy those people who've already answered ;)

I reckon there'd be a few knots that would do a sufficient job of securing the rope, but using a series of round turns and a crimp means you have a uniform diameter for each layer of rope on the drum....

I'm assuming the drum has a hole in the side and the crimp was outside the drum?

Hi guys and gals,

I have rope on my winch and at the drum end i have braided the rope onto the drum..
You should never let your rope on the drum when winch get lower than 5 rapes on the drum whether it be rope or cable.
But having the rope braided onto the drum should it get below 5 rapes on the drum the braid will always hold you if done correctly unlike the crimbed on clips. As soon as the load becomes on the clip,it will let go ever time.

Cheers Tim...
