I never had the gear to check it, but yeah, yours sounds stuffed if it's showing zero..

I was unplugging my module just to get normal speedo etc.. 9times out of 10 after having been unplugged for a day or so, when I plugged it back in the lights would be gone & all was well (for a while)... Couldn't rely on 4x4 to actually work though..

My issue turned out to be the shift motor position sensor & luckily an easy fix in the end.

I never got any fault codes in all my time with shift issues.
Just the weird lights on, still 2H, speedo reading like it was 4H, etc.
If by fault codes you mean via the OBD under the dash, then no, I didn't either.. The fault codes I'm referring to are read via a test light connected to the diagnostic port under the bonnet... I've got a PJ. If you have a PK later than 2009-10, I believe they do not have that diagnostic port under the bonnet..

My speed sensor turned up today after A LOT of stuffing around.
It seems the speedo drive shows up in the Mazda parts list as a "Wire" pretty bloody helpful what ever moron put that in there.
Anyway I decided to try second hand, $230 trade from ford or $300 from Mazda I wasn't confident enough yet.
So the first wreckers got one sent from Brisbane, turned out to be for a manual. Idiots, I couldn't have stressed the point more guys it had to be for an auto and the damn thing had a tag with manual written on it.
Now I have one in my hands from Athol in SA. The resistance measures 293! Close enough to 300 for me.
I will be trying it out tonight, will post an update. Fingers crossed :)

Woop woop I had a win!
All sweet now for $110 express posted from Athol Wreckers.
If it goes again I will have the confidence to then buy a new one.
The onboard diagnostics test port under the bonnet was spot on, very handy on these machines with so many electrics.
So if you have it use it, because I had the same symptoms as everyone.
Now to go get muddy :D

Hi guys, I'm just wondering if through all this issue that we've all had with the lights, has anyone else's economy resembled a 1980's V8?

I used to get around 12.2lt/100 combined (pk 2010 auto) which I wasn't happy with, then the lights started coming on intermittently and the economy went to 16lt/100. I don't drive with a lead foot, which my mates constantly complain about. Then I went and put bigger wheels on it and now it's settling at around 17lt/100k's.

I didn't realise how good I had it at 12.2lt/100! Ford gave it a bit of a clean out (probably just an expensive spray of the throttle body), replaced air and fuel filters and wanted to change the 27 month old battery which I said no to.

I'm about to start working my way through some of the fixes you guys have mentioned in this thread. I hope both issues are related...

Hi Nat...

Didn't seem to affect economy on mine... It does alter speedo & odometer when it happens though. Have you allowed for that when working out your L/100KM?

No, I suppose I haven't. So when the lights are on, it's thinking it's only doing half the distance too, don't I feel silly! I noticed the difference in gear changes, it sits in low gears a lot longer than it would in 2H, and revs higher. I put my poor economy down to that, but what you say makes much more sense.
Thanks for that Fleetwood, I'll track my economy by GPS until it's fixed.

I have fixed mine by manipulating the position sensor plate as explained earlier in this thread... In the meantime, you can do as I was doing prior to my fix. Just unplug the 4x4 control module ( located under dash drivers side, there are pictures somewhere in this thread) doing that will restore normal speedo & odometer readings, as well as normal gear shifts.

Cheers
Rob

My problem keeps coming back. I can't for the life of me work out what circumstances cause it to come back.
When it does, I whip out the T-15, adjust the position sensor, and away I go. However after a few weeks or months it comes back again! It seems that there is no "optimum" position that solves the problem for me, but adjusting it fixes it temporarily.

So:
1) Has anybody permanently fixed their problem with a new 4wd control module?
2) Has anybody permanently fixed their problem with a new shift motor?
3) Has anybody permanently fixed their problem with a an adjustment of the position sensor, and if so, what am I doing wrong?

By fix 1) yes, as described by me not too long ago in this thread . . . 2nd hand module, manual versions around pretty readily, auto variety like hens teeth, I scored the only one wrecker could locate (from Tassie to Adelaide, $440 total).

I finally got around to getting a replacement module. I bought one from a wrecker for $440 exchange (I don't know why they insisted on taking the old one?), and while I was concerned about buying a second hand one that may have the same problem AND sending mine away, when I wasn't sure if that was actually the cause, the guy I bought it from knew about the part as a common problem.
The new module seems to work fine, but I'm not 100% confident yet because it was always an intermittent problem. Hopefully it won't come back.

I took mine to Ford who failed my battery, then refused to waste more time fault finding until I had the battery replaced ($280 according to them!). I said no, took it home and found that the battery had very little liquid in it. Topped it up with some de-mineralised water and I haven't had the lights come on since.
I couldn't believe it. All the checking and research, only to find it was as simple as water in the battery (in my case anyway). Ford's reasoning was that if it's sending out incorrect volts, the relays may play up because they don't see what they expect to see.
I hope this is the cause for a few others who are having this problem, as the fix doesn't get any easier than this one.

Cheers,
Nathan.

Interesting - I will have to check out my battery. It seems to be in good condition though - the engine starts very easily. I have for a while wondered if it is a power supply or earth problem, and have considered putting a cap on the supply near the control module to reduce any noise as things turn on.

My "new" second hand module was fine for a month, then gave me the lights error twice in a week. Once it wouldn't resolve until I moved the position sensor, the second I was able to make go away by turning everything off (radio, fan, AC, not pushing the brake pedal) before turning on the ignition.
So either:
1) The replacement module I got was also stuffed
2) The replacement module was fine, but my car has destroyed a second one
3) The problem wasn't with the module, but is the position sensor, wiring, motor, or power supply (battery)

Suggestions?

Hey Drodda...

Almost certainly the shift sensor then I'd say.. Probably been that all along... Have a look at page 7 of this thread on adjusting it.. If that doesn't fix it, you may have to remove the shift motor, then carefully remove the position sensor plate & clean the thick white grease away from the stops.. Reassemble & see how that goes..

Good luck
Rob
