dmax engine same as colorado?

Unread post by 100_cruiser » December 21st, 2009, 2:00 pm

is the dmax engine the same as in the colorado? or is it similar?
By the way has anyone had any dramas with a dmax? initially wanted a bt50 but seems to be too many problems with clutch/gearbox especially.
cheers

I gather from talking to the DMax guys that 'their' version of the engine is more powerful than the virtually identical Colarado, which has a slightly de-tuned version of the same engine. I took both for a drive over the same terrain, and while the difference wasn't all that obvious, if pressed I'd hafta say that I did feel the DMax was a little bit more 'driveable' without having any real evidence to support it - just one of those 'seat of the pant's' things, I guess. Check out the specs for both, there can't be all that much in it!

Both are identical, though from what I've been told, the d-max ECU is tuned slightly differently to spread the torque better, and the cylinder liners are supposed to be low friction melt in liners for better economy. Not sure if that's all true or not, but there is not much in it anyway. American styled panels for the colorado, or old 07/08 rodeo panels for the d-max. 6 of one, half dozen of the other

anyone with problems/reliability issues please post

Same engine, but apparently Holden change the ECU so it will connect to their existing diagnostics computers in the dealers. They both quote the same power/torque figures.

I have just ordered one, I'll be picking it up in feb. I did stacks of research on the utes that I liked the look of. The D-Max and the colarado have the 4jj1 engine and on paper the D-max comes out slightly in front.

Mine is a 5 speed with lockup converter , so is it a ten speed ? !! I spend most of the time in sequential shift mode. if it wasn't for the traction ctrl i would be buying rear tires already , great grunt. Holden quote 2.8 Lt. displacement for the Colorado and the D max 3 Lt.

You probably will find it may only lock up the converter in the top two ratios. The lock up doesn't make it any more gears though and it will still be 5.

The July 2012 model onwards i.e. after they divorced were different engines, same chasis and some panels but outside of that different assembly lines etc. The DMax runs the Mitsui 3 L turbo diesel, the colorado runs the fiat 2.8 L turbo diesel.
