What engine oil

Unread post by nonzero » August 23rd, 2010, 8:38 pm

Just wondering what everyone is using in their d-max's engine oil wise, was thinking of using penrite HPR 5 or nulon 5w-30? Also what are people's opinions on going to a fully synthetic oil at only 3000km's, should I be running a semi synthetic oil until at least 15,000km's?

From what I have gathered you don't get the best out of our diesels until at least 20000 kms.
The super lubricating power of full sinthetic oils might just stretch the break in time out a lot more.
I would stick with dino or semi until 20000 km or when you feel your engine is run in at it's best.

yes its made by penrite to repco's cheap ***** specs just like their filters, you may as well use gtx as repco oil.
I'd go to a full synthetic any time you like all vw merc and audi diesels are run on full syn from day one and they bead in just fine.

Stuff I got is ok and I would be highly surprised that Penrite does anything other than just put their oil in Repco bottles just like BP did and the filters are claimed to meet or exceed OEM specs. I change mine every 5000 anyway in the petrol and diesel so I think worrying about filter or oil quality is a bit over rated. One motor is coming up to 500K and the other 200K and neither use oil and I use whatever filter and oil is reasonable priced on the day.

Penrite do make Repco's oil but it is made to Repco's specifications. It is only blended by Penrite. Penrite had to compete for Repcos' business just like the other major oil companies including Nulon. Maybe it says something about Penrites position in the market that a major player like Repco would get them to blend it over all the other oil companies. I only know this because of my mate who works at Repco. :) :) :) :) :) :)

I use Castrol RX Super in mine. It's listed in the book, I get it cheap by the 20L drum, so thats what I use. Doesn't use a drop between changes too. :D

Ok for those who think the quality of oil etc doesnt matter if you change it often. WRONG. ok oil needs to be "run in" so to speak and over changing can do more damage than not doing it enough. Running synthetic oil in an engine not designed for it can be BAD. Synthetic makes it more prone to glazing and wont flush carbon off your cylinders properly. RX Super is good on a conventional diesel but im unsure about commonrails. On the 4jj1 (colorado&dmax) motors you need a sythetic fortified oil, not semi, not full synthetic, but fortified. I dont fully understand how synthetic fortified works though im sorry.I run 15W/40 Castrol Magnatec professional with A3B3 rating. Anyone feel free to correct me on anything if im wrong. My opinion and experience.

Hello guys,
I to own a izusu/colorado 3lt diesel and was told not to change the oil till the 10k mark (now have 4500km on the clock) but i want to and not sure where i would stand if the dealer found out that i had (i would use the genuine filter/ oil).
Your opinions please.

I did mine at 5k. the quicker you get the run in oil out the less time you have microscopic metal filings floating around. They wont know if you do it without making a mess, nor should the be bothered by it

I ended up going by the book and using a recommended oil which is caltex delo 400 15w-40. The engine seems to be quieter and smoother with this oil then oil supplied from factory.
