Standard exhaust vs aftermarket

Unread post by Reddirtearth » November 28th, 2016, 7:52 am

For the 2016 Dmax LS-M Dual Cab,
Would fitting an after market exhaust like king brown 3' be beneficial to fuel economy or would it be worse off?

Cheers

If the std exhaust gas flow is catered for well enough at the speed and load you normally operate at, then a 3" won't improve the economy in my opinion. That is because all the engine operating parameters at that situation are as they should be.

A larger exhaust may give a little more power but only at absolute full throttle and it may also provide a quicker acceleration under some conditions.

I have a 2011 with the front half at 3" but normal muffler and tail pipe as original.
No additional economy is noticed but under the flat to the boards acceleration where max boost and fuel are administered to the poor pistons doing the conversion, it does make a difference.
So unless you intend to drive at full throttle, possibly not.

Have you noticed the size of the exhaust system on your vehicle and compare it to earlier turbo diesel vehicles? The exhaust systems have grown bigger anyway.
