Is anyone running 235/85r16 on their Dmax?

Unread post by jazzeddie1234 » February 26th, 2012, 11:51 pm

I see plenty of discussion about 265/75r16 with minor rubbing and I like the profile of the 235/85r16 but is anyone using them? If so which ones (the diameter varies a lot between manufacturers) and how are they drivability wise? How do they compare price wise to 265s?

The 235/85/16 is 57mm bigger than OE and therefore illegal, 7mm over. I know some use 265/75/16 and these too are more than the 50mm bigger od and 5mm over the max.
245/75/16 is 25mm bigger than OE and also within the legals.
Are you aware of all the effects the bigger tyres cause because there are plenty of effects, some you might be happy to live with and other less desirable.

Yep -understand the legalities. Not wanting to be sidetracked but the actual diameter for each tyre manufacturer varies a fair bit from the nominal chucked up by tyre calculators.

I want a set of play tyres and my 245 AT's have an actual tread width of around 200 so a 235 would be ideal (bigger but not too big to attract attention like the 265/75 which you can spot as oversize in an instant?)

Not yet - only found one reference to them fitted on a dmax/col/rodeo. Back to the 245/75 and 265/75 options - have to decide soon since my current set are almost gone.

Like the look of the general grabber at2 as an alternative to the bfg at ko but want to stick with a brand that is readily available in small towns (just in case). Want to check out the toyo m55 tread if I can find one.

Well I fitted 235 85 r16's to my dmax (775 mm approx guard to rim height nearly 40mm lift) and Toyo open country mt's fouled badly not just minor trimming needed. They pressed heavily on the flare and I wouldn't recommend fitting them unless u had a body lift aswell as suspension lift fitted...

Thanks for the info - the toyo mts are 813mm diameter which is quite big for a 235/85. It seems 805mm is about the limit before fouling?

I recently fitted this size to my 2011 Dmax (Trademate back).
I think this is possibly the best upgrade. Slightly narrower/slightly taller.
It rides better and has slightly higher gearing which I think is ideal.
I haven't had it on the beach yet but on past experience I think it will be an improvement.
There is no rubbing at this stage but haven't had it fully loaded.
