2000 Frontera V6 Hard Steering

Unread post by mischef » February 12th, 2012, 1:44 pm

Hi Everyone,

I have a 2000 model frontera S V6. I purchased it the other day but noticed that the steering was a bit hard. We bought it anyway and the steering seemed fine. In the last few days, the steering has become really weird! Sometimes the steering is really soft and how it should be but other times it is as if the vehicle has no power steering! Has anyone else experienced this or know how to fix this? I looked at a site that someone was asking about high idle revs and the did something to the power steering pressure switch. If I replaced the pressure switch, would it fix this problem?

Any input would be great!!!

First thing i'd be checking is to see that there is sufficient fluid in the reservoir and make sure there is not any air in the system.
Check for movement in the steering rack as something may be damaged.
I recently had a bit of play in my steering wheel i had the rack pulled down stripped and reassembled and now the steering is like new.
might be worth taking it to a steering specialist near you if you have one as steering is not something you want to take a chance with.
Low range is your friend
