I've got a 2002 V6. Not sure if it uses the same system, but I did have a similar problem.

There are a few different types of light flashes; one flashes and ends, one will flash fast and one will flash at a regular pace continuously.

You should hear 2 parts moving. The transfer case actuator, followed by the actuator that engages the front axles.

My light was flashing continuously.

The transfer case actuator was working, but there was no sound coming from the axle actuator and it wasn't engaging the front wheels.

The problem turned out to be the switch that detects that 4x4 is engaged.

All we had to do was remove and clean the switch, which is located top-forward-drivers-side of the transfer case (if I remember correctly). If you do this, you'll need to clean out the inside of the switch with some WD40/kerosene.

So, how fast is your light flashing? and does it flash continuously or stop after a certain amount of time?

Could also be leaking vacuum hose.
