Has anyone got a New MU-X yet?? Thoughts??

Unread post by BigMav » January 21st, 2014, 7:48 pm

Anyone got one yet? I'm close to taking the plunge and dropping my hard earned on one but would love to see if anyone has one yet and their thoughts on it so far, in particular towing. Here is the one I test drove with aftermarket wheels and 265/70R17's on it. I didn't know where to post this, can the mods make a new subforum for the MU-X?

I'm considering one of these at the moment where is that picture from looks like it may have a lift already. Looks nice in black. I'm hoping that the accessories will bolt over from the dmax so we don't have to wait too long for bullbars etc

Be gentle with me and my assessment:
Small fuel tank
Lower tow weight and tow ball weight
lower clearance
Higher claimed fuel consumption
Shorter body length
....
I'm keeping the 'max

Discorover the picture is from when I took it for a test drive, I'm in the drivers seat. No lift just bigger tyres fitted by the dealer, it does have a nice stance at standard height. The dealer up here was trying to get a dobinsons MCC bar trial fitted to see how and if it would fit but I have my doubts as they are a different chassis and also the headlights are a slightly different shape. It shouldn't take that long for some gear to come out though.

jazzeddie1234, agree on some of what you say, I would definitely like a bigger fuel tank but it still has a decent range with the excellent economy of this engine, albeit slightly higher due to weight and aerodynamics I would imagine but I was thinking along the lines of a dual wheel carrier (when avail) with a jerry on one side when required. Shorter body length is always going to be the case in a wagon compared to a dual cab and is not really an issue with the vehicle itself, I'm not trying to compare it to a d-max or any ute for that matter. Each vehicle serves a different purpose. I've had my dual cab for years and it has been great but I need something more family orientated now.

As for the tow rating, here is one I am very interested in as I will be towing a boat weighing up to 2500kg regularly. From my calculations and comparisons from the brochures, if the D-Max and the MU-X is at full GVM both tow a maximum of 3000kg so are exactly the same in that regard, if you want to tow the max of 3500kg on the D-Max you will have to decrease the payload to do so. I don't have the calcs with me I'm away for work but I am happy to dig them up when I get home to prove it. I am taking my calculations from the Gross Combination Mass and subtracting the Gross Vehicle Mass, this will give you a real figure of what you are allowed to tow. My D22 has a towing capacity of 2800kg but at full GVM it is only 1900kg. Same as the BT50, claiming 3500kg but at full GVM can only manage 2800kg. Its all just smoke and mirrors and its not until you look closer into it the truth is revealed.

Lower clearance, I'll take your word for it but the shorter wheel base will give it better entry and exit angles and also a better ramp over angle and it should be much better off road to be honest with a 5 link coil rear suspension setup.

I'm actually comparing it to other wagons on the market and I think this vehicle should do really well against the overpriced prado that can only tow 2500kg, the patrol which can only tow 2500kg in auto guise, and the mitsi challenger or jeep are the only other real contenders and neither appeal to me at all.

Fair enough, I am comparing it to a vehicle I am happy with. You still get the excellent motor, great economy compared to others and tough running gear. No issues there. And yes I would not consider trying to pull 3.5t with anything weighing half as much!

BTW some mates did the canning stock route recently and the dmax used the least fuel by far.

I will be getting one towards the end of this year, everything I want (proven engine/gearbox) and nothing I don't want (like a can-bus electrical system)

Also admiring them with interest... Yet to test drive one. Good to know 265/70/17 fit without a lift but would prob settle for 265/65/17. I'd like to see accessories become available for them. Hopefully a bigger tank. What's the 5 speed auto like?

Hi Dave, The auto box in the Dmax (same unit) are great, always finding the right gear quickly on road and off, nicely matched to the engine.
Around town i get 9ltr/100 on the highway I get around 7lt/100, sometimes lower, no clunks or anything, very smooth.

Yeah I thought I would prefer a 6 speed box but after test driving it, it felt pretty good and can't say it ever felt like it needed an extra cog. The dead flat torque curve probably helps with that regard as it seems to just chug along in any gear quite happily.
