t belt warning light

Hi everyone

A mate of mine has an 97 dual cab diesel 3lt non turbo hilux and on the way home today the t belt warning light came on. it has 285k on it and he has had it for about 45,000k. does this light come on to warn of some trouble or does it just indicate it needs replacement.

My 80 series is replacement at 100,000k, is it the same with the hilux or do they have smaller k's before replacemant?

Last thing, how is it reset as it doesn't have a hole in the speedo glass for a push button like the 80 series of mine.

Thanks in advance for your answers

Simsy

The light just warns that the belt needs to be replaced.
I think they are due to be replaced at 100,000km intervals. (or 80,000km)

To reset the light you need to swap a wire in the dash panel from one terminal hole (a) to the other terminal hole (b).
You need to pull the dash panel out..

You will have a Yellow T-Belt light that will come on around the 100,000km. You will also have a little rubber grommit in the dash. To reset the light you would remove the rubber grommit and push the button behind it.

If your vehicle has done 140,000km you must have had the timing belt replaced ??

The Hilux's with the 5L in them have a t belt interval of 150000 km the t belt light comes on between 140000 and 150000, mine came on at 142000 km and they do not come off the drightness control in the dash they are full bright bloody annoying. To get rid of the light there is a switch in the dash that you need to access not easy.
If changeing the belt use a genuine toyota kit, as the cheaper kit the mech put in mine at 150000km lasted to 159000km and has cost him heaps find thread in this topic by me.

150000 is a long time for a timing belt.
i got mine it had 111000 on it and there was a sticker to say that the belt was done at 95000. ill probably do it again after about 160000

Just a warning on my 2.8 hilux if you do the timing belt and reset the light before the 100,000 k mark the light is set to come on at the next 100,000km so if for instance you did it at 88,oook and rest the light it will come on at 100,000k It happen to me and frighten the daylights out off me as I was having injector rattles happening at the time and when the light come on thought I had done a timing belt but reset it when it past the 100,000k mark and all was good.

belt

yeah around 100,000ks is right for a timing belt

I did mine on my 3L hiliux recently, piece of piss first one i have ever done pretty straight forward, to make the pump stay just turn it to the position with a long spanner and cable tie the spanner to something. Or get someone to hold it like i did. Tell em you just need a quick hand ;)

My dads 3 litre turbo diesel is due soon and i think its up to me to do it. Curious as well with the light as a few people have said the light you have to ground the wire or hit a reset switch. Some trucks and cars any warning lights that come up you disconnect the battery for abit.

Hi All!

My 1998 HiLux (LN166) 3L T-Belt light lit up at 141,000++KMs on the clock. The manual says replace the timing belt by 150,000 KMs.

I'm scheduling the timing belt change any day now. By the way, for those who are not in the know, you not only need to replace the timing belt but the tensioner bearing, idler bearing, and the upper and lower seals as well. (Very expensive stuff!)

Can anyone guide me as to how to reset the T-Belt light on the dashboard? If you guys can even give me copies of the pages off the manual with illustrations all the more the better. ;)

Thanks.

Hope to hear from y'all again soon. :truck:

Dougie,

How many kms has your 1990 Hilux done ? Timing belt should be done approximately every 100,000 km

For water seperator light there is a plastic tap under your diesel filter. This is on the passenger side of the engine bay on the firewall. You will need to gently turn it (unscrew it) a turn or 2 to let the water / diesel that has accumilated to the bottom to run out for a few seconds or until only diesel comes out.

In saying that water has somehow entered your fuel system probably at a service station. If water seperator light goes off then comes back on after driving for a short while then I would get the fuel tank drained and fuel lines flush with clean diesel.
