After being inspired from last weekends night drive, it seemed like a good time to add some lights http://www.4wdlinks.com.au/albums/Modifications/aac.jpg
I then had to go and test them ;D

At some point I will fill this thread in with how it got to where it is, but at the moment I cant find the photos :(

Thats cheating if you can see where your going ;D
Please keep this section for your build-ups, restorations and projects. Simply adding accessories is not the go, unless its the spotties that finish yer truck we've been watching grow and your funds diminish! ::)

As requested by Tony ;D from the start
As I bought it, september 2003
http://www.4wdlinks.com.au/albums/Modifications/aaf.jpg
28" tyres on vitara rims, a dodgy soft top with no back window
http://www.4wdlinks.com.au/albums/Modifications/aag.jpg
It used to be a nursery car and so it had a bit of dirt (potting mix) inside, so I cleaned it, fortunately it didnt get used to that sort of treatment ;D

It didnt take long before I started needing more clearance, and a lift was added to the shopping list
http://www.4wdlinks.com.au/albums/Modifications/aaj.jpg
http://www.4wdlinks.com.au/albums/Modifications/aak.jpg
Soon after I got it I put on the spotties that used to be on the subi and removed the sway bar
This is my first club trip with central coast 4wd club
http://www.4wdlinks.com.au/albums/album46/aab.sized.jpg
It was the most boring trip I have ever done, but I still managed some carnage ::)
http://www.4wdlinks.com.au/albums/Modifications/aam.jpg
Doesnt Matter, I never liked that bullbar anyway, so I straightened it, sold it and built a better one

Fitted a 2" lift and some rancho 5000's
http://www.4wdlinks.com.au/albums/Modifications/aaq.jpg
The exhaust had to be modified to fit around the shock
http://www.4wdlinks.com.au/albums/Modifications/aar.jpg
Somewhere along the line I made a super duper garden hose diff breather

Chrissy holidays and I managed to touch park dads recently purchased hilux just a bit too hard at stockton :( :-[
http://www.4wdlinks.com.au/albums/Modifications/aao.jpg
It did bugger all damage to the hilux, only twisted his bar back slightly, but obviously messed mine up.
I fixed mine sort of, but it still bears a few scars

This thread is starting to read more like a damage report than a buildup, but my next mod was to stop this from happening again
http://www.4wdlinks.com.au/albums/album46/aae.sized.jpg
I dropped off a rock ledge, the fuel tank broke my fall and punctured itself in the process.
I then found out that soap works wonders at plugging fuel tanks. I even tried to rego it with soap in there, but they were on to me :( and I had to buy a new tank
Anyway I built a bash plate and bent it, strengthened it, bent it again, took this photo and strengthened it again. its now pretty sturdy :D
http://www.4wdlinks.com.au/albums/Modifications/aat.jpg
Just after rego, I fixed a problem I was having with the diff, by welding it up
http://www.4wdlinks.com.au/albums/Modifications/aau.jpg
I dont reccomend doing this unless you rarely drive on road, cause its pretty hard on axle and pinion bearings and UJ's ;)

So far I hadn’t really spent much money on the little zook, about $900 for springs & shocks, $60 for the bar. I wanted new tyres, and so worked out what I could fit with only 2” lift, I determined the back could fit 31” unmodified and maybe 35” if I cut back the outer lip of the guard and moved the fuel filler. The front would need to be cut no matter what, so I set about modifying it to fit the 31s
First step was to remove all the front panels
http://www.4wdlinks.com.au/albums/Modifications/aav.jpg
Then to remove the bump stops and shock tower
http://www.4wdlinks.com.au/albums/Modifications/aaw.jpg
And build new ones
http://www.4wdlinks.com.au/albums/Modifications/aax.jpg
This was all so I could move the axle forwards 40mm, which would give me more tyre clearance to the firewall
http://www.4wdlinks.com.au/albums/Modifications/aaz.jpg
I also had to extend the tailshaft and move the steering box forwards
http://www.4wdlinks.com.au/albums/Modifications/aay.jpg
I later moved the spacer to the diff end, as it made the uni rub on the subframe
I also put some rockhopper series 3 gears in the transfer case, thanks to Jamie from The 4WD Specialist for coming down after hours so I could pick it up :D

I bought a cheap 31” tyre to see what I had to modify to make everything fit, this then became my spare
http://www.4wdlinks.com.au/albums/Modifications/aba.jpg
I took pats advice in the mud tyre test and got his budget winner, the smitomo, which I noticed won outright off the road ;D
http://www.4wdlinks.com.au/albums/Modifications/abb.jpg
They don’t look much bigger than the old ones, in fact they really are quite small in the grand scheme of things, but they’re a huge improvement on the little AT’s :-\
I had to do a little bit more cutting and bashing to make them fit, and the job was pretty rough
http://www.4wdlinks.com.au/albums/Modifications/aaa.jpg
But I had to meet someone at Stockton that day ;D

I came back later and did a proper job of cutting the guards, I had already taken a few chunks out of the tread ::)
http://www.4wdlinks.com.au/albums/Modifications/abd.jpg
The inner guard was bent up to meet the outer guard and welded in place
http://www.4wdlinks.com.au/albums/Modifications/abe.jpg
Then the flare was trimmed up and put back on about 25mm higher

My new found torque from the transfer gears managed to bend the mounting bracket and had to be straightened
http://www.4wdlinks.com.au/albums/Modifications/abg.jpg
and reinforced
http://www.4wdlinks.com.au/albums/Modifications/abh.jpg
You can see the garden hose ready to become a transfer case breather lying in the background ;D
Im not sure if it was axle wrap that has sagged my rear springs but the back was getting lower and needed some extended shackles to bring it back to level
http://www.4wdlinks.com.au/albums/Modifications/abi.jpg
More testing, for tyre rub
http://www.4wdlinks.com.au/albums/Modifications/abj.jpg
The thing I miss most in the soft top is having any sort of security, so I got a lockable toolbox and bolted it in the back. The other thing I miss, is being able to hear anything above 50km/h ::) ;D

Tyres seem to be wearing OK considering the way I treat them
http://www.4wdlinks.com.au/albums/Modifications/aab.jpg
It has been suggested in the past that I need a rollbar ;D So I finally built one
http://www.4wdlinks.com.au/albums/Modifications/abl.jpg
Ready to paint, its made of gal cause they didn’t have black available in the right size
http://www.4wdlinks.com.au/albums/Modifications/abm.jpg
I recommended earlier not to weld your diff, I had to pull mine out again cause the pinion bearings were shagged. So I got a new diff, pulled the open centre out and put the welded one back in, good to see I take my own advice ::) Passed rego welded this year though ;D
http://www.4wdlinks.com.au/albums/Modifications/abn.jpg
The axles are looking a bit twisted too, Im waiting to snap one :(
http://www.4wdlinks.com.au/albums/Modifications/abo.jpg
And that brings us back to the start of the thread and the lights

For the right price ;)
Mounting the roll bar on the wheelarch wasnt where I idealy would have put it, but it seems to be where most people mount them. The main hoop lands on the floor step behind the seats and is pretty solid

Mate, your zook is extreme compared to mine, LOL ;D
Did you ever think about a spring over conversion? :-\
Humpy
26-10-2005, 06:59 PM
Yeah i thought about the SOA, but at the time didnt think I'd be doing the sort of driving that required it
I was wrong about that ::) and if I did it again I would spring over the standard leaves instead of buying new springs

A spring over will help it get on its roof, but Ive managed that now anyway ::)
Ive also developed a hatred of leaves, so if it gets modified it will be coils
