View Full Version : project bluey!! sold sold
you may have seen the pics i have posted but ill give a actual run through of these and ill place in smaller pics!!
stay tuned
ok heres the story!!
the viehcle.
1981 fj 45 landcruiser traytop purchase price a measly $500 bucks
all my mates said it was a heap of shite for that price but it was all there without even looking i told the guy it was sold great i thought!!
my 500 got me a trailer full of parts and as i put it a 4x4 somewhere on that trailer!!
we picked it up on a sunday morning loaded it all up and paid for it by this stage i didnt even know if it ran we winched her on to the trailer.
by monday arvo i had it all sorted parts to go here there and grouped it all up.
i even got the motor going with a lot of old oil and old fuel smoke it goes yay!!
i filled up the brake res and bled them up ok great then the clutch slave cyl and it actually drove ok off the trailer into the shed .
day 2!! started to rip the body off ready for ainting stripped all the wheels and bits off ready for cleaning .
6 months of cleaning preping and painting followed i soon got sick of sanding.
by now i have had the head off and rebuilt and back on along with all the suspension bushes and shackles.
rear diff seals and gaskets and front diff as well a set of free wheeling hubs were fited at this stage.
many weekends spent and many weekends the wife was more and more upset.
by now it was a basic chassis sitting on stands in the shed at this stage i rebuilt the transfer case and gearbox but i didnt do the clutch which came back to haunt me later.
i re did all the fuel lines and cleaned out the tank at this stage.
after this i got the body back from being painted and proceeded to put the wiring loom heater fan and switches dash pedals and everything back in to the cab we brought new carpet and some bucket seats which lookd good all back togeather he cab was compleate relinned the roof inside and bolted it all back on and took it for a test drive the old slave cyl and brake master soon got replaced as they were stuffed the steering was shocking so all that was rebuilt too.
brakes new shoes and wheel cyl adjusted up and off the down the road we whent test after test without the tray it just spun the wheels so on whent the steel rails to ad weight!
so with all that done time to start the tray i stripped all the wood stripped all the paint added rails for strengthe re created the backend and welded all the cracks in the train and strengthend her all up then of to the steel shop for the tray 4mm checker plate welded all that in stregthend up the sides primmed it all up and painted.
all bolted back on i rushed to get it all done we finished the total build on march the 19 as on the 20th i had it entered in a ute muster only thing wrong is it developed a eletrical problen and didnt want to run properly i trailered it to the muster on friday night and saturday morning it started and then decided to blow flames out the exhaust not good with a flamming car and being dressed in my cfs (country fire service)gear.
i took out 3rd in the rural 4x4 ute which i thought was cool.
more later....
so now what ??
i guess we registered it and it ran sweet after we tuned it!! re gapped the tapets points renewed leads cap, rotor.
it ran great till we took it out one day and i was changing back gears fron 4th to 3rd and the clutch pedal whent to the floor!!
so a new clutch and 12 hours later in it whent!
i have also begun doing the sides for the tray in solid pine clear varnished and they should be done by this weekend. ill post some pic later and also the canopy i got with it.
how much have i spent ?/
id say in total in parts around 2500 but i have done all the labour so i guess i saved on that.
more deails and up to date info

Thats a very nice job u have done there...
Not bad at all.... U certainly must of dedicated urself to the job thats for sure...
Its a credit to ya :D
If you just showed me a before and after photo I would have said something like "Nah mate youre full of sh.."
That is a bloody impressive result. Enjoy!
thats a great job!! well done ;D
Nice work. It's certailnly come a long way. You should take it back and show the guy you bought it off and see if he recognises it! :o
Just wondering about the bucket seats you put in it. Did you have to do much to them to get them to fit or did they bolt straight in? What are they out of? I want to put some in my 47 tray back but have only just started looking around.

i think they were from either a celica or a tarago or a turcel wasnt much i had to do i had to bend the brackets down and 3 out of 4 bolts whent in so the other i made up a steel plate with hightensile 14mm bolte welded in and supports for the belts verry strong it is i think even stronger than original!!
have u come across any major problems trying to do this...ne major plans for the thing
problems yeah!! i figured out if you try to shortcut anythin it will bite ya in the ass in the future ie the clutch!!
i should have one it when i had the body off and box out.
to re do the clutch i had to take the roof off as i dont have a hoist and was the easyest way to do it seats out carpet out and floor inspection plate out top gearlever plate off and a block and tackle with 2 jacks and various blocks of wood!! but its done and road worthy!

what a job!! thats awsome m8 thats come a long way just be looking at the pics ill read it later when i have time. nice bull bar to :P
believe it or not the bull bar if you could call it that is actually home made!
dead set its actually a fj55 standard bar with the up rights made and welded on to it it looks so good and i first thought it was a brought one!
very very nice work
top work, btw what motor does it have
future thoughts!
i plan to make another tray and make some quick connects so i could design and make a camper up for it i plan to make up some hurdles for the sides so i can take it out shooting and have to make some kind of ramp so i can get that bike in the background pic and a mates up on the tray with out busting my back!!
very very nice work
top work, btw what motor does it have
its got the original 2 f in her but i have plans on taking the 308 and 5 speed from a shorty my uncle rolled then gave me but i have to fabricate some heavy duty mounts as the box i have is supported on its own where as the shortys is mounted on the bell housing so time will tell
this weekend the sides go back on new pine sides freshly varnished and then with a few mods the canopy will go on for a fit up im looking forward to it!

:o :o :o ;D
thanks for the feed back guys ill post up some pics of the sides and the canopy once fitted!!
i finally desecrated the old blue!!\
with rego finally on it i took her out on some tracks out back of my home toen and got it quite dirty!!
now ill have to wash it and take a pic of it clean and with the new pine sides!!
old bluey isnt running too well i think we may have done in a motor i think a piston ring has departed most of the cyl read about 105 and one is reading about 60 so i think shes shagged!!
any one know if the 3f will go in ??
i was toying with the idea of putting one in and a 5 speed has any one out there in 4x4 land ever done one??

Is this likely to be motor not gearbox noises? Or is the gearbox still ????
Maybe a big diesel with auto attached would be a better solution!
i recon it could be the motor and not the box so itll be a while before i get this one fixed!!!
iwas thinking of the 3 f and a 5 speed i recon by chucking in a newer motor and box might give it longer legs and more reliable!!

You'll need to change diff ratios to cater for the taller gearing and the 38's when you get them on ;) It'll try to do 60kph at 800rpm :o
a lift on the front would definantly need to be done!!
the back is ok !! its too high in th back end !!!
yeah not sure whats going to happen now after doing the comp test i have lost all faith and want to give up on it!!
ah well !
I know a fella who has put a 3F into a HJ 47 trayback, I'll chase hime up and see how it was done. :)
cheers we now know what the problem is it has a dropped valve so i think a conversion may be in order!
well i have put a new valve in the head and leak tested it it passed well no leaks!!
have got it alll back togeather and runing but still backfires timing is ok so i now think its a fuel problem but i have also modified a xf carby to fit on the old girl and have to look at the eletric fuel pump tomorrow
so i hope all goes well
well we got it going again!!
so we took it for a thrash and tried to get some flex !!
not happening!!!
