PLEASE someone help i need some information on the big swap. Average cost, easy or hard? Has anyone done it themselves? Some help would be greatly appreciated! :-\
Specific information for hilux surf IFS would be awesome!
Sell it and buy a live axle vehicle would be the best advise I could think of...... ;)

Agreed.
Far too much hassle, especially if you have to ask that question in the first place. There are plenty of people that could do the job, but what would be the point?

not sure exactly what sort of cost you would be looking at, very rough guestimate 3-5grand, as i said very rough, could be less than that but i doubt it would be more. Anyway's it all comes down to how much you need the live axle, IMO it wouldn't be worth the money in most cases unless your building a competition truck especially if you have to pay someone to do it. I wouldn't class this as an easy modification.
My guess would've been 3-5 grand also, and I very much doubt it 'd be less ::)
.....& still can't see the point ???

I would of said,, if paying for the whole conversion, and keeping it legal 5-7k unless just bolting on 2nd hand parts, not new or renewed.

I just got a quote from a company called 4x4 engineering down at Acacia Ridge (Brisbane) they quoted me $7700.00 This was for 98 dual cab hilux desiel.

Sounds expensive to me.
If you can weld its an easy job.
S/H Front diff complete disk to disk including front tailshaft= $500
New Front Springs=$300
Custom Left hand steering arm=$390
Landcruiser steering arm relay rod to suit=$50
Lancruiser Pitman arm to suit=$100
Shock Hoop Kit=$175
Material for Spring hangers=$50
Bushes=$50
U-Bolts=$60
Shocks=$200
Total=$1875
Ok now sell your-
IFS hubs and rotors=$300
CV Shafts=$100 each
Diff Centre= $250
Total=$1305
So this can actually be a cheap conversion if you can weld and have some fabricating skills.

Time is the biggest killer in this conversion. There is a lot of cutting and grinding and also a lot of measuring to get it right the first time.

Have you done this conversion before Lotza Mumbo!
If you have did it work out well!
WAS IT WORTH IT! thats the main question.

Basicaly yes. But it was re-working the entire front suspension of a solid axle. I have modified everything that is needed when doing the SAS + more.
Front axle is forward 5" with dropped front spring hangers,crossover steering and custom shock hoops.
There is actually more work in doing this as you also need to mount a new steering box.
Then the rwc and engineering start, which is where the big dollars come in. Labour involved would also outway the parts required.
Even if using the thing unregistered, the engineering still needs to be of a standard which is suitable, for offroad use. [unless your aiming for the darwin awards]
Because if the car is insured, and you dont notify them, then you are paying a premium for no insurance, and if the mods are found to be the cause, then you become personally lliable.
This isnt a job to be done by someone with no proffessional negligence / faulty workmanship or public liability insurance and to run these things costs money also, thats why hourly rates are what they are, to cover the "hidden" costs.

I am in Northern Brisbane, near Morayfield, the quote that I got was more a case of interest than any real intent to spend $7000 + on a conversion. That said I would be interested to do if it could work out to be roadworthy / legal and somewhere as cheap as you are saying.

Laurie Sternbeck's 'lux was converted using Bundera components. Looks like Toyota built it.

For that money, check the trading post for a hilux thats for wrecking. I have seen live axle front, rolling chassis's for under $300!!!
Be patient, keep looking. Much cheaper and easier then keeping your chassis.
(Drop you motor, box and body onto the chassis)
You can even buy complete cars for a grand, body might be crap, motor might be blown, but you don't need those, right??

Considering I have just virtually rebuilt the motor when the timing belt broke on it and redone the rear diff as well then yes, I could easily drop these into a different chassis.
Well not sure about easily, but is certianly possible.
