View Full Version : The "Pig" - Hilux 2.4D
Having done the Marathon computer session and followed project Garth for 15 pages, and madmac and a few others I can honestly say that the Pig will never end up of the same calibre - top job guys!!
The "Pig" hilux is a project car nevertheless - and each time I flick through the forum I get another idea (or more to the point "borrow" someone else's) that I wouldn't mind having a go at.
The beast as purchased 1987 Toyota Hilux LN-65, 2.4D.
Its scratched, its bent, its old. If I have a go and stuff it up the first time - nothings lost ;D

Problems from go...
Front mounted exhaust (for open cut coal mines) - 180 bend at flange & clean broken just below.
Intermittent stalling
Stuffed Bushes all round
Leaking swivel seals
Leaking fuel pump
Buggered Steering Wheel
Missing & torn mudguards
No rear brakes (drums overworn, cylinders siezed)
Leaking rear main
Vibration in drive shaft.
Unfortunately I should have taken more photos as I did the work - but grabbing the digital camera when I'm up to my elbows in grease :-\
I'll get out with the camera & get some of the mods that are already done regardless.
The list is something like this:
Front wheel bearings, axle seals, swivel seals etc.. replaced.
Greasable shackles and polyurethane bushes all round
HiTech headers with a 2" exhaust
Full rebuilt on the injector pump - the cam plate was bent
Injector recondition and dyno tune
New drums, shoes and brake cylinders in the rear
Chassis Black from head to tail
New Grill & some gloss black on the bar, bumber and anything else that looked old - mirrors, wipers
New mudguards - wider to fit bigger wheels
Sports steering wheel (damn the armstrong steering :'()
Clutch
Rear main oil seal
Lightforce 170's
FM Stereo (whooo hoooo!!! ;D)
Still to come:
Muddies (30x9.5's)
Replace side steps / sliders
UHF
Rack for M'bike or Tinny
Lokka ??
Air compressor & reservoir
Whatever else looks like its worth a go....
The Dyno - what a Powerplant ;)

;D ;D Wanna Drag ;D ;D
Well, foget about rear brakes!!! think of line locks!!! Just kiddin, ;D
What price is it going for?
I've only recently brought it - Its not actually for sale :P
I actually think the toolboxes were worth more than the vehicle :)
The Snorkle - Airflow.
Can't say I was real impressed with the template, the snorkle almost rests on the A pillar and the directions for the hole in the engine bay wall were not real acurate. >:(
Nevertheless - now it can swim :)
Before

After
http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a69/luxa/Snorkle.jpg
Looks kinda weird - sits partly on top of the guard.
Point to note for next time - drill the hole smaller and enlarge it to fit with a power hacksaw!!!
Luckily I were told not to use the template for the mounting bolts - drill the airhole through the guard, fit the bolts to the snorkle body with and dab some grease on the heads. Fit the snorkle to the car & remove - the greasy dot marks the spot!!!!
Nice, could be alot of fun with some lockers!
The other problem I found whilst fitting the snorkle :(

This is the air intake from the airbox to the motor, not an easy split to spot when fitted, apparently quite common.

There both Tojo's - probably related :D
The name came with the Truck - something to do with the intermittent stalling and difficulty in starting ;D
Hard to start...... #3 glowplug was US (25% harder to start).
A new set of plugs and it starts easier than my 2.8 daily driver ;D
Intermittent stalling. The first time I experienced this it was just out of Warrigul on the way to get the exhaust fitted. It just died. Pulled up, few pumps on the pimer and off it went.
Second time, Dandenong Rd (you vic blokes would know the traffic!!). I pulled up into the service lane, flipped the bonnet and found the priming pump was hard down against the housing. Pumped it again & off it went.
Dropped the fuel tank and found the plastic strainer that should have been over the pick up had come off in the tank. It would block the pick up tube until the motor stalled, then fall loose when the vacuum from the fuel pump stopped - allowing the motor to draw fuel and start again.
Problem - fuel guage only works for first 1/2 tank, sits on empty after about 300kms (When I drained the tank thinking it was empty had over 30L left). Any Ideas.......
Gettin there ;D ...
Fuel guage. E = Enuf, F = F'all ;)
good story :) i bet it's 100% on what it was when ya got it! I see it's an ex-firies vehicle....... then you just KNOW it's had the piss flogged out of it.... keep up the good work.

What's your plans for the "PIG", rock crawler or more of a tourer.
How much did the swine set you back?

Lookin good so far mate. Keep it up and keep the pics comin ;D
Open to ideas but it will probably be based around a tourer - hopefully with a bit more ability than standard.
This is my first crack at modifying a truck so I have no idea where its heading, bearing in mind its on a budget & I don't think the 2.4D would handle 35" tyres etc...
Down the track I wouldn't mind building up a rock crawler / competition truck but have to do the apprenticeship first ;)
I also have a 2.8 extracab, and the missus has a 3 litre dual cab - (no real need to keep it purely as a tourer).
Has to be able to carry the Tinnie &/or motorbike and will spend its share of time chasin ferals with the spotlight.
As I said..... Open to Ideas........
Cost about 2k when purchased, rego'd, relatively little rust and 2" lift enforcer springs and shockers fitted about 12 months ago, Toolboxes on the back cost 1k+, came with the truck.
Hate to think what its cost me now :-\
New Boots - Motorway Muddies, 30x9.5's - after all it is a pig.

Kept the ol' 205 splitties for the road work.
