Shrink em in a prog like paint shop pro, hell even paint that comes with windows will do it.
So are you based in Albany or is that just where the ute came from? 2" lift is good. Any more than thatin West OZ is expensive to licence. I bet you get an extra 20kmh without that canopy on. Careful you dont cop a sticker for the reversing lights!
Good luck
Loz
I look forward to the build. You cant start from anything more stock.

Nice choice of vehicle, looks good! That bullbar looks the same as mine came with. GET RID OF IT! The ARB bar will be much more useful and provides heaps more protection. I have ome suspension too an can't fault it, deffinantly a huge improvement in every way over the stock setup, especially when you're carrying a bit of extra weight with a bullbar etc. Welcome to the Hilux club and have fun!

yeh loz i am in albany where are you? yeh the canopy slowed her down a fair bit so im thinking of getting a new one or changing the origional. i hook the tray lights up so they are seperate the the reverse lights on the car so they only come on when i flick the switch. ill be putting 2 more under the car as its quiet hard to see with those lights as they reflect of the back of the tray. i just put diff breathers on yesterday ran the front to the engine bay and the rear to the roll bar. cost me about $40.
cheers

Have a go at the lift yourself - plenty of guys here to give you some advice if you run into trouble
I thought Rancho delivered..... (www.4wd1.biz)
Don't forget to add polyurathane bushes and greasable shackles to the list.

I think thats the same bar as my 2.4D - and it came with an ARB sticker on it.
Anyone wanna swap for a winch bar ;)

You should be able to pick up a pair of axle stand for under $100. Compare the cost of getting the suspension fitted to buying the tools you need - remember once you've brought the tools you've got them for next time!!
You need to support the chassis to change the springs so make sure you get HIGH stands that can do this.
Drums :o mate your asking for trouble, not worth the damage if the vehicle drops - to you, your mate or the truck.

You'll want a turbo before long definately, my mate got one on his lux and it completly transformed it (its next on the shopping list for my 3 litre). For a cheap good quality lift go see Great Southern Spring works on chesterpass rd. He'll modify the stock springs to whateva ya want for a fraction of the price. And when u get those muddies, head straight out to Redmond state forest after a big rain (so any time u like in albany)

well its been awhile scince ive updated this. few things have changed now got lightforce 240blitz spotties and i am now running with the idea of 1uz fe conversion. toying with the idea of running a sc14 supercharger on it going to talk to rotomotion this friday about that. got a mechanic to do the converison.
ordered new suspension today. got tough dog foam cell shocks and rtc, west coast suspension springs (dunno how these will go but ill give em a try) new pins shackles bushes. hopefully ill have this installed before i go back to work.
anyway thats a bit of a update

I would try the 1uz without forced induction first ;) I am not sure if the driveline would handle a S/C mine will spin all 4 33s now. ;D
But if you are willing to strengthen as it breaks then go for it ;D

13-09-2006, 01:29 PM

how ya yours been? are u running body lift or just suspension to fit the 33's?
cheers
jack
Iam running 2" sus and 2" body to fot the 33s. You will also have to look at what gearbox you ar running as well!!
crack
13-09-2006, 02:01 PM
wat gearbox are you running? i asked twisty but i havnt heard from him yet. i spose the std hilux box wont cut the mustard. thinking supra box but how would that go hooking up to the transfer case etc? might ask guts wat hes running.
Guts is still running his standard box, his is holding up to the punishment I believe.
Twisty and Nemesis are running R150s which are standard V6 4Runner boxes.
I upgraded from the standard W56 to a R151f which is the same box as Twisty and Nem but with a different 1st gear ratio. Mines from a surf.
The R series boxes are the stronger ones available and are basically a supra box.
The latest V6 Luxes have a R type also but these are still expensive to buy.
I changed mine because as Twisty said to me if you change later you have to get another bellhousing adapter kit. ;)
I sold my old box for what I paid for the new one with transfer, but I got a bargain. (Thanks again Twisty ;D)

bim brocks last time i took it off it was f@*king heavy with 4 people lifting it. when i did the body lift i just used a jack. but to take it off if u got access to a overhead crane or sumthing that would be the easiest option!
heres a update. now go extractors and maxxis bighorn 31" mud tyres and a 2" body lift. not sure about the lexus now as im thinking of getting a patrol ute in the next year or 2. anyway few pics.

tom
crack
12-07-2007, 11:30 PM
it cost me 3.5k with a ne exhust. i havnt intercooled it yet as they dont do kits for hilux's anymore so its gonna be a custom job. prolly get the intercooler off my mates 180sx and then just source a few parts here and there.
iv got a dyno print out ill have to scan it and post it up. im getting better fule economy on the highway but thats parlty due to the bigger tyres changing the gear ratios so she aint reving to much. but fuel economy around town isnt the best because i dont have a turbo fuel pump so its over fueling. thats on the long list of things to do.
any other questions dont hesitate to ask.

Hey crack, quick question when you first fitted your 240 blitz lights did you notice an increase in temp on your gauge as they take a fair amount of room in front of radiator and how was the temp increase when you whacked the turbo on any feedback would be great...
thanks, Tim

nah mate i didnt notice a difference in temp with the lights tho it did cross my mind. as for the turbo i havnt noticed any temp increase in normal driving but when going through a deep mud hole nearly at full revs the temp did increase a little but barley noticable. im getting a intercooler off a 180sx at xmas time so this should solve any probs and give me a lil extra power.

my ARB dakar springs have done the same thing on my LN106- its to do with the way theyre bolted down, not failiure of the springs.
My factory springs looked the same before i removed em too.

01-10-2007, 10:37 PM
ferremit how has it got to do with the way they are bolted down? do you mean the ubolts? if so i dont see how thats got anything to do with it. they are bent not fanned. never had a problem with old springs doing this. if ya could explain what ya saying that would be great. guys at 4wd shop here are a bit stumped to.

03-10-2007, 02:13 AM
if your spring perch isnt 100% flat- and most arent, you get a slight high point centred where the spring bolt is.
When you pull your U bolts down tight- they form a wave in the spring, due to there being another hinge point between em.
Well thats what ARB told me anyway!

04-10-2007, 09:35 AM
well acrylic never really dries, it stays somewhat soft so if u paint 2pac clear over it it will react badly. so yeah acrylic base an clear is good if your painting in your garage or whatever cos its really easy to buff up to a good shine in the areas u may mess up.

Malua
05-10-2007, 10:44 AM
acrylic is cheap an easy to work with, but 2pac is the only way to go, much better finish more durable an will pay off in the long hall. No respectable panel shops use acrylic. If u have someone painting who knows how to paint, there is no 2 ways about it mate. 2pac the whole thing, being a solid u can jut use 22line neway which doesnt require a clear coat.

To be honest no I havent heard of it, I would say it has been installed incorrectly, be careful you dont stress anything. To test it jack the wheels up and hold one wheel you should be able to turn the other and you should hear clicking as it disconnects. I would say the springs are in wrong, or the locker is faulty.

Give me a call re the diffs I think your mechanic is arse about. You shouldnt need to remove either the LSD or the detroit all you have to do is take the whole centre from the rear and fit it to the front and take the whole centre from the front and fit to the rear. Hilux front and rear diffs are interchangable, so there is no need to pull either of the centres apart.

ah if thats the case it should be easy fix. thinking about it i dont see why that wouldnt work. i know to get the detroit in the rear he had to take the carrier out of the front to fit it. coz the rear used to be lsd, so the locker didnt fit in the carrier. but he didnt relise the lsd would work so well after the new clutch pack went in.
how hard is it to pull the front diff out? i knwo the rear is easy because ive done it twice now. but havnt done a front diff yet.

Do you know exactly WHAT Detroit it is you have in the rear? If it's the Detroit Soflocker, it isn't a cheap diff, and it should work better than it sounds like it is!! But if it's an EZ Locker, then it is effectively the same as the Lokka, and are a cheap and harsh version, they probly are better off up front, as they resist unlocking when under load, you really hafta work it to make it disengage in a Lux rear with no load!!
But the SofLocker should be fairly easy, and if it isn't then you need to check the installation. They are pretty finnicky about set-up, you need to make sure backlash and pinion pre-load is within std specs for the lux, preferably at the 'lesser' end of the scale, the more backlash, the harder and harsher they feel! You certainly shouldn't have any difficulties with the Soflocker disengaging without a load in the rear if it's all set up right!
Geez, I know people who've got them in the rear of their Hilux's and they collected the car after fitting it and drove off, coming back more than 20 minutes later to say, "we haven't been off the bitumen, but we were expecting all sorts of things with the locker fitted, we can't feel anything different, you sure you fitted it??" They were only convinced when they were shown the OE diff centre in the rear of their tray! But that was fitted by a guy who is pretty much a magic handed diff guru when it comes to backlash and pinion pre-load etc!! He can make them all as smoooothh as duck sh!t
And like boof says, I thought the front and rear diffs were interchangeable? Should be no need to do anything apart from take the centre assy out of the rear and swap it into the front and vice versa!
Cheers!

how would the steering be with the detroit in the rear?
Put it in the front and you will wonder why you didnt before. If you have problems sell it off and buy a 4wd systems lokka I have installed heaps of these in the back yard and never had a drama, so if the detroits are that much hassle to install its just another reason not to waste your time with it. Personally I think the Detroits are an overrated pos (and yes I have had the displeasure of driving two vehicles with the almighty softlocker :D) but to each their own.
Offroad Gear
14-12-2007, 07:26 PM
With the EZ locker in the rear you are better to run with A Thicker oil 85/140 and the amount of free play on the brass shims at either side of the locker make it play up if they are to worn and out of spec making it do all sorts of weird stuff backlash is better set a .005" helps eleiminate bangs a little more.
The front and rear will interchange no problems at all.
I think there is some confusion with the lsd part because the ez wont fit in the lsd hemisphere that is why he used the front for the rear and put the lsd in front. If that is what he did and he hasnt changed the ring gear pattern then this will also cause a drama as the front gets set up diff to the rear and will now be running on the drive side of the tooth rather than coast as it was in the front.
Hope that made sense.
Dave
A EZ locker needs to be within spec a lot more than the 4wd system locker with regards to setup with the shims etc don't know why but they do lockrites seem better than the detroit less complaints in the US.
Make sure you adjust steering stops in the front to help stop exploding CV's when you fit the locker to the front wind them out approx 3mm front and rear both sides, makes steering a little larger but helps take load of CV at breaking point, this is even more so with the LSD rear than lockers front and rear once the rear gives up the front does all the work and BANG lol.

14-12-2007, 07:56 PM
Depends mate if he hasnt changed any of the patterns then it is a straight forward swap and all will run as normal if he did change them then what you will get is a little noise from the rear as it will be driving on the tooth different but it wont be that bad to break it, it will wear back in after time anyway.
just use the thick oil for the lsd aswell obviously lsd oil.
front will seem a little tighter on steering when bound up just dont hit it full noise to get out and cvs locker will be ok you may want to martack the inner axles on the front and remove the 1 clip to make cvs easier to change shud they go Bang.

The EZ Locker and the Lokka are so similar that if you didn't already know which was which you'd be hard pressed to tell!! And the same goes for their installations and the way they work! Because they use the same 'dog-clutch' style of operation, they work exactly the same way! So it won't make a great deal of difference (if any) between putting the EZ locker or any other Lokka in the front, they behave just the same, and they are Waaayy more harsh in their operation than a properly fitted Detroit Soflocker.
And Soflockers aren't hard to fit, they just need to be fitted properly, exactly the same as any other diff! You hafta make sure they are within spec. If you fit ANY diff without paying attention to backlash and pre-load, you will get harsher operation. And you'll wear out the diff much sooner than otherwise, simply because the teeth on the gears aren't meshing properly, nor driving smoothly as they spin. You can get away with a poor fitting for a while, but it WILL end up destroying the diff and probly do it in such a way that it'll take other bits of rear axle out with it too! Chunks of pinion teeth dropped into the gap alongside the cross piece are eventually going to grind! A lot of the Soflocker failures that I hear about and see are because othewise competent backyard mechanics try to fit them without using the correct gear or getting the fitting within the manufacturers specs, and what they end up with might work for a while, but it results in unsatisfactory behaviour and early failure. They'd probly have exactly the same problem and results if they did exactly the same thing with any other high end performance diff. But EZ lockers and Lokka's definitely don't rate that label!
So WHATEVER you fit, you will get a better result by getting it fitted by a professional who is good at their job. IF you happen to be able to fit the 'locking' components without moving the relationship between crownwheel and pinion, or the positioning and pre-load that results from the carrier bearings, (like you do with EZ Lockers and Lokkas) then you will probly get away with doing it yourself, anything that upsets or changes any of those relationships or settings will require the right gear and a practiced hand to get right, so leave those jobs to the pro's. And if your closest guy expresses concern about doing the task, listen to him! If he's worried about getting it right, ask if he'd prefer you to go elsewhere, and if he does, then do so!! Find someone at ease with the job and it's intricacies, it isn't rocket science but neither is it Lego or meccano bolt together simple!
So crack, I'd be looking at moving your EZ Locker (or a Lokka) to the front diff, they won't impact anywhere near as much on daily driving fitted there! If you want something that's going to work and not interfere with your daily driving, but you want the benefit of a locker all the time; the only way to do that is to get a Soflocker fitted properly to the rear. And they cost more than the cheaper options - for very good reason! But you've already got the EZ Locker, it will work well up front, just not as smoothly as a Soflocker. Don't be fooled into thinking that a Lokka will be any better, in fact the EZ Locker works exactly like the Lokka, they are that close to identical!
And I'm sorry that you've had a bad run with Soflockers boof, but were any of them fitted professionally by someone who is au fait with getting the backlash, pinion pre-load, and finer points of fitting a diff to Manufacturers specs? If they were, and they were still harsh and aggressive in their operation, you should have taken them back, just like any other performance locker that failed to behave in its advertised manner. I've been sprung once, by accepting a rear pinion seal and bearing replacement from a fella who didn't set the pre-load properly, and it started the misbehaving almost straight away. I didn't chase it immediately, cos the guy who did the job was remote, and I didn't get back out that way straight away. But after the diff failed and I took the worn and broken bits back for him to see, he refunded my money and contributed to the repair of the damage that resulted from his failure to do the job correctly! It was easy enough to see that the pinion pre-load wasn't right, the pinion teeth didn't mesh with the crownwheel at all properly, and it took less than 20,000km to start breaking off the corners of gear teeth! Hopefully I'll be alert enough not to get sprung again, but once in more than a couple of million kms with Detroit Lockers isn't too bad!! And btw, more than one million of those kms have been on the one Detroit Soflocker fitted in the rear that outlasted the cars it drove and it got passed from diff to diff! Not even like grandads axe, it's STILL exactly the same diff! And still runs smoother than a Nissan LSD and takes the car a helluva lot further!
Cheers!

what do you mean by "martack"? i probably need to break a cv, havnt done one yet. will go and see my mech next week and ask him wat the backlash was and if he changed the ring gear pattern
once again peter you really are a world of knowledge
Peter @ Aawen4x4
14-12-2007, 08:24 PM
A lot of Lokka's and EZ Lockers are intended to be fitted without taking the diff centre out of the carrier, and if he did that, he shouldn't have changed the backlash at all! BUT, I think boof said something about this before! I haven't had too much to do with fitting Lokka's or EZ Lockers into Hilux's, can you do it that way boof? Without taking it out of the carrier?? Leaving the crown wheel and pinion fitted together the whole time, or do you hafta seperate them out entirely?!
And like Dave says, you'll only get the gears running slightly differently IF he took them apart. As long as the depth of the meshing hasn't changed, then they should have no more issues than a slight noise as they fun on the backside of the tooth, but if you change the way the teeth mesh, and alter WHERE on the tooth the mesh point is, then you run into issues!! Has he done that? You'd hafta ask!
My little problem had the crownwheel teeth sharpened to a point on one end, all in less than 20,000 km (admittedly hard work, but still not a heap!) the pinio teeth were just not meshing fully enough to put the wear point in the middle of the crownwheel teeth, and that can be a worry! It was!
Good Luck!
BTW, you don't really need to break a CV crack, you can get the same feeling by just pulling out one front axle and driving around like that for a week, mae sure you do some 4 wheeling as well. Oh, and I'll send you a busted CV, so you can dabble in the grey goopy grease trying to clean it all out without spearing any tiny slivers of steel under your finger nails or ripping your hand open on the razor sharp shards of metal that remain from the cage! You really don't need to add the stress of having it self destruct on the track somewhere, especially if its getting late and you gotta be back at work tomorrow for that special meeting about wether your job continues and it'll take at least 2 days to walk back to where you can catch a train!

I run a Detroit Soft locker rear and the detroit Tru-Trac front and have no problems with it what so ever. You would not know it was there on the street so they can be setup correctly. I took a lot of time to get it exactly within specs which is more than I can say with some others I have had to work on that were fitted by so called diff experts here.

Sorry to hijack your thread, but this may be relevant to you.
Not so long ago I was discussing reversing up hills and a few people got on and said ÿour diffs weren't designed to take that sorta load in reverse because of the way the gears are cut. Correct me if I'm wrong, but if you swap the centres aren't they going to be running the opposite direction? driving foreward the rear diff drives towars the pinion and the front drives away from it......swap them and you are effectively driving them backwards, aren't you?

anyway does around $500 sound allright for a rear ifs diff housing and axles and brake lines? that a rough price that wreckers have given me.
looking at putting an ifs rear diff housing in as its got a wider track to help with stablity and also they have bigger drum brakes as far as im aware. then running wheel spacers in the front to match the rear.

nope locker is staying in the front. will work better in the front then the rear. tyres will go on straight away im not sure about extended shackles yet.
well the short story is the pits stuffed up and didnt tell me all the paper work i needed and so my ute never went over the pits so short of blowing a fuse i booked it for tuesday and took my ute home. now im having a beer to calm me down haha.
