that looks sweet without the back bit!

If you did chop it you should think about puttin a tent on the back, or making a slide or something so you can take the canopy on and off

a 'hungie' is a 100 series. hundred=hunjie. Kinda slang..or something...

Possibly, depends on what you're intending on doing and materials, and i have no idea of price yet.
so what are you intending on doing? chopping the fiberglass and adding a skin/something to that?
soft top?
not chopping it, remove it altogether and making a skin?

8)

07-07-2005, 08:46 PM
about the 1hz: this was dad's truck b4 it was mine. the original motor (3b) blew up on him so he stuck a 1hz (from an 80 actuly, not a 100) in it. the 3b is fairly gutless lol.

07-07-2005, 08:49 PM
bushboy: what i was thinking was making it a tub ute. so chopping the fiberglass roof where kaos photochopped it. so id need a sheet of something (fiberglass might be easyer, i really dunno) to cover the back of the new cab, and it'll need a window in it (so i can see out the back)

at this stage im still very much 'thinking' about it. i cant see this happening lol, but it would be nice if it did 8)

27-11-2005, 07:37 PM
sorry ive been lazy with this thread! done a few more things to it including front bar and lights. next up i hope is some bigger tyres (im thinking 35s, probably ETs) i also want to play around with the suspention a bit, maybe take a leafe out of each corner to get it moving a bit better and stick some smaller shackles on it. here's a more recent pic.

I have also thought of turning my middy in to a ute as well. I was thinking keep the fiberglass on top and have it as a removerable roof. I have notice that on my rego papers that it is classed as a ute ???

And yes the 3b is a gutless untill you put a turbo on it but i would prefure a 1HD-FTE

04-12-2005, 04:58 PM
Well last night scotty (BushTuckerNed) came round and we played around with the suspention a bit. didn't touch the rear, that'll be soon i hope!

We replaced the 2 main leaves in each pack with 1" longer springs, and took a leaf out (3rd from the bottom) as well. Got rid of the spring retainer bots while we were at it. also took off the anti flex bar... whoops i mean anti sway bar.

This has made a HUGE differance to the whole car, a much better ride, and heaps more flex. a lot more body roll, but its worth it. here's a few pics:

thanks scotty!
http://www.4wdlinks.com.au/albums/album538/DSCF3325.jpg

putting the new pack together:
http://www.4wdlinks.com.au/albums/album538/DSCF3327.jpg

front of the car up on axel stands, shackles not in yet. that strap you can see to the left was to pull the diff foward because the springs were made longer from the rear (i now have more clearance for bigger tyres)
http://www.4wdlinks.com.au/albums/album538/DSCF3329.jpg

cutting off the bottoms of the new U-bolts, scotty recons its all going to plan!
http://www.4wdlinks.com.au/albums/album538/DSCF3333.jpg

duck had a good excuse not to be helping, he got back from schoolies that night! he did order a good pizza tho and got some tunes going for us :P
http://www.4wdlinks.com.au/albums/album538/DSCF3335.jpg

some before and afters:
http://www.4wdlinks.com.au/albums/album538/DSCF3339.jpghttp://www.4wdlinks.com.au/albums/album538/DSCF3345.jpg

http://www.4wdlinks.com.au/albums/album538/DSCF3344.jpghttp://www.4wdlinks.com.au/albums/album538/DSCF3346.jpg

bye bye retainer bolts!
http://www.4wdlinks.com.au/albums/album538/DSCF3342.jpghttp://www.4wdlinks.com.au/albums/album538/DSCF3348.jpg

even tho we finished at 1am we had to go for a bit of a drive to test it out!
http://www.4wdlinks.com.au/albums/album538/DSCF3355.jpg
i would have lifted a wheel here before all this work.

probably doesnt look that impressive, but if u saw the car with the old suspention, you'd see how much of a differance it made!
http://www.4wdlinks.com.au/albums/album538/DSCF3358.jpg

scotty's trying, but i kick his arse :P
http://www.4wdlinks.com.au/albums/album538/DSCF3363.jpg

went back earlyer today for some day time shots!
http://www.4wdlinks.com.au/albums/album538/DSCF3375.jpg

i have some clearance issuses...
http://www.4wdlinks.com.au/albums/album538/DSCF3374.jpg

the springs open up a lot better now:
http://www.4wdlinks.com.au/albums/album538/DSCF3379.jpg

got a few strange looks from passing motorists, i recon they were jealous :P
http://www.4wdlinks.com.au/albums/album538/DSCF3395.jpg

nice tuck!
http://www.4wdlinks.com.au/albums/album538/DSCF3397.jpg

ended up losing 20mm of static height but its worth it for the better flex!

thanks heaps to simon from 4wd tv for all his help and of course to scotty and duck!

04-12-2005, 05:00 PM
next up will be new tyres. simex ETs or similar. i was thinking 35s but now seeing how much it'll limit my flex, i thinking i might just stick with 33s. dunno yet

Looks good Tom, but you might want to put those retaining bolts back! The twist you've got in the leafs will eventually pop the front drive shaft or even worse rotate the front diff. The only strength the front leaf pack has at the moment is the first leaf without the bolts. The locker with show up all your hard work!

Just a quick question did u put in the 1HZ motor or did you by it like that ?

tom_286
07-06-2006, 08:42 PM
the car was dad's before it was mine, he put the 1hz in a good few years ago. its a nice fit because the 75 ute and troopy come out with a 1hz and they are an identical front end. if you have any questions, fire away!

mondo
08-06-2006, 05:45 PM
so the 1HZ would bolt in to the bj 40 as well they were pretty much the same chassie arnt they

i doubt it, the engine mounts had to be moved foward a bit on the bj73. but once they were changed it's an easy fit.

You could put an isuzu 4BD1(i think is the engine code) 4 cyl turbo.
Aparentlly these go real hard and have the pulling power of a mallee bull

current plans for the middy

rightio im pretty happy with how the middys going at the moment, apart for some clutch repairs here the future plan:

i need more width, my tyres rubbing on the chissis is whats limiting my flex and i want to be more stable. havnt totaly decided how ill make it wider, but at this stage im thinking ill just go wide offset rims. but there's a conversion i can do useing 80 series rear hubs and a disk break conversion on the rear and ifs lux/surf/4runner hubs and rotor on the front. either way ill be going wider soon i hope.

after that ill pull a leaf out of the rear and without winning lotto thats as far as ill go, should be working pretty well by then.

after that ill put some much needed time/effort/dollars into 'prettying it up'

thats the plan, we'll see what happens... :D

HJ60

but really, i could add about a thousand things to the list, but given the time/dollars/mechanical knowlage i have i need to limit it. im trying to be realistic lol

hey tom, how much suspesion lift do you have and what shackes do you run.

the leaf packs were 2" lifted but i have changed them.

in the front i replaced the two main leaves with leaves 1" longer and i also pulled a leaf out of the pack.

the rear i just pulled a leaf out (might pull another one out sometime, just gotta see how it settles down with sone weight in it)

so i dont know how much lift i have now, i actuly want to find out standard sepecs for the middy so i know how much lift it has (i would guess no more than 1")

the shackles: im not sure exactuly what they are but they are greasable, extended and anti-inversion.

Suspension update!

Today I had my rear leaf packs modifyed by Carrolls springs on Sydney Rd. Leanghtened main/wrap leaves and the bottom load bearing leaf changed to a much thinner one. I wont have as much load carrying ability anymore but just in a little drive today its such a better ride! Im keen to see how it goes in the bush 2moro.

And I just had to get it up on a ramp! :P

They're Bosch Compass 2000s. Went with them because of their shape, they should sit nice and low on the roof. Done an after market HID conversion too so they should put out enough light. I'll use them to light up the sides as I've got pretty good light straight in front.

All I've got to do now is bolt the feet on the roof bars :D

Also I'll only put them on for night runs so no one flogs them this time...

and thanks marin for the lights!
