Hey all
Well this is my 4b
http://www.4x4world.com.au/forum/album_pic.php?pic_id=453
I have owned it for about three years now and i recon it has been the worst three years of it's life.
First modifications i did were just the basic easy stuff
Diff Breathers
Snorkle
32inch mudders
Towbar
Towhooks
I was more than happy with these mods for about a year
Then i started heading down to southport and the poor old lux just wasn't keeping up the pace SO....
Winch
2inch body lift
2inch spring lift
Then off to southport again this time come home with blown
head gasket (22R) SO...
Supra engine conversion
Long Range fuel tank
http://www.4x4world.com.au/forum/album_pic.php?pic_id=408
http://www.4x4world.com.au/forum/album_pic.php?pic_id=480
while i had the engine out i made up some rubber guards to stops the mud from entering the engine bay. The old ones couldn't handle the pace anymore
Also had to top mount my intercooler (interheater) due to the lack of room up the front. which meant i had to put an awfull looking bonnet scoop on it.
Now a little bit better have plenty of power but never much traction.
Next on the list of modifications to be done in the next year
landcruiser diff
R151F gearbox
35 inch exteem treekers
shackle extension
And finally on the long term wish list
Lockers
Bead locks
http://www.4x4world.com.au/forum/album_pic.php?pic_id=465
nice lux how do you find the supra motor off road for low down torque etc
patute

nice lux how do you find the supra motor off road for low down torque etc
has good low down tourque well lots better than the old engine anyway but you do have to be mindfull of the moment when that turbo kicks in
it would be good to see it go a guy up here has one but its for street only no offroad so not easy to guage its ability i am tossing up between this motor and the v8 that twisty has
brokelux
05-06-2005, 03:36 PM
probebly would go the V8 if you got the money for it i didn't so i couldn't but i woulda if i coulda if ya no what i mean
wasnt aware the supra motor was cheaper that would keep the missus happy but yeh i thought the 8 might be better
that looks awesome man
what year is it ?
brokelux
05-06-2005, 03:43 PM
supra motors are suprisingly cheap it cost me a lot more to put the engine in my car than the motor originally cost. and i did it all my self so its just parts that i'm talking about.
The engine came with bell housing electrics computer ect but i put an aftermarket computer in it anyway

looks good brokelux i have been considering engine swaps for a while now but the $$$$$$ means as long as the old one is going it stays there there are that many different ones its hard to choose
brokelux
05-06-2005, 04:18 PM
Here is just anouther example of the nightmares you come across when doing these conversions. http://www.4x4world.com.au/forum/album_pic.php?pic_id=481
The aftermarket computer i used didn't like the magnetic style cam sensor that these engines run so i had to make an opticle sensor out of a RB20 fit.
brokelux

looks good brokelux i have been considering engine swaps for a while now but the $$$$$$ means as long as the old one is going it stays there there are that many different ones its hard to choose
yep exactly the same situation i had so i drove it hard till it blew a head gasket ;D
PJ.zook
05-06-2005, 04:21 PM
Taz that simply means you use the rev limiter to its full advantage so you can get new engine quicker.
If you need to convince the mrs or anything, just fill the engine with diesel engine oil and in no time it will be pluming enough smoke to put a Mitsubishi Colt to shame.
taziiy
05-06-2005, 04:25 PM
i dont need to convince her it she said it can happen but not till this one dies (and yeah i could empty the oil out and drive till it goes but as i said at the moment $$$$$$$$$$ is the big thing if it dies now it will just sit in the front yard like a knome till the $$$$ come along at least i can still drive it ) so im just biteing my time it will happen one day

Cool Hilux, I thought about the Turbo Supra for a while, it's a really popular conversion in the states....but went with the V8 in the end, as having turbo/intercooler under the bonnet is just something else to go wrong, and you just can't beat the sounds of a V8.
Looks like a neat conversion though, and I'll be interested to see your dyno figures!!

ok at the moment its only putting out 115KW but thats with a very very very basic tune its running way to rich at the moment i have to finish it off then get it back to the dyno i'm expecting 180 - 200 kw

If ya stick 4" springs unda it, it wont artic' and will be ruffer than it already is to ride around in....
Buy some longer springs move the spring mounts then u mught git some decent artic' and a bit of lift....

got the front brakes apart tonight put new seals through the calipers getting new discs soon.
also pulled the intercooler off had a small hole in it.
had a new p.s hose made as the other one was too short and blew out in no time
i'm going to pull the gearbox out to replace the clutch but im still looking for a transphere case to fit a r151f gearbox + tailshafts and crossmember for the conversion.
pulling the alternator off tomorrow its charging 16v but only 12v with the headlights on high beam >:( something to do with all the mud it has swallowed i recon

Doug, did you have the long range tank when i saw the lux, dont remember seeing it. I am just about to put a second hilux tank into mine so i can carry a bit more fuel. Bloke should be dropping the tank off today, hopefully. Gunna have to move one of my air receivers to make it fit though.

Naa didn't have the tank in it when i came to see you added that one bout a month later
good luck with the second tank sounds like an interesting project are you going to set up a fuel pump to pump fuel from your second tank to the first??? or straight to the motor??

Scrounged a camira (yes camira) electric fuel pump from a wreck up the bush behind my place, will use that as a transfer pump i reckon.

well i finally got back out to the shed today- 3 weeks after i planned to be out there!!!!
So i put the front end back together new discs caliper kits repacked the wheel bearings with high pressure grease - used on escavators ect. new discs pads and rotors
relocated the oil cooler after it had a argument with the alternator.
fitted and rerouted new p/s hose because the other one broke
The brakes are still really spongy and the clutch still slips so i'll check out the rear brakes tomorrow and maybe do the clutch next weekend

did some more to the lux tonight (Thanks Reddo and Mark)
made some brackets and put the grill back on (thanks Reddo and Mark)
mounted the oil cooler again (thanks Reddo and Mark)
ohh wait did i do anything???
hows it going all?
Im just about to start fitting a 7mge to my 89 dualcab lux and was wondering what radiator your using brokelux?
did you need a bodylift? what fuel pump you using? how hard did you find the swap? did you use the 7m/22r engine mount combo like i am going too?
Im Sure there will be more questions as the conversion progresses.
Cheers Sass

26-08-2005, 07:33 PM
hey Sass i'm using the three core deisel radiator with a huge thermo fan i already had a 2 inch body lift and i wouldn't have been able to top mount the intercooler without the lift... however if u were to front mount the intercooler it would fit no worries. i have too fuel pumps the first one is high volume to lift the fuel out of the tank to a second pump wich is a high pressure pump. wich supplies the pressure to the engine had to do this because i couldn't gravity feed the pump due to 4wd and didn't want to mount the pump under the tank
i just used one engine mount of the 22r left hand i think (bolted staight on to the block) and manufactured anouther mount for the right hand side. was a bit harded.
still though i had to cut and reweld the mounts to the chassis.
hope u will keep us informed as to how your conversion goes and not only keep to one post on this forum.
cheers Doug

well i just used a three core deisel radiator and mounted it straight up had to grind a bit of the member at the bottom of the radiator it still runs pretty close but doesn't touch recon i will get the air con pully machined of the end of the harmonic balancer to give me some extra clearance
yes i wired the engine using a wolf3d computer but sent it to a sparky to get it fixed properly about 6 months later when my tail light harness needed replacing
it took me bout 9 months from start to finish but i had to stuff round turning the turbo housing upside down, mounting the intercooler, oil coolerand all the goodies that go with a turbo car.
would have been a lot quicker if i didn't stop every five minutes to get anouther beer out of the fridge

ok i'm thinking about modifying my steering has anyone out there with a hilux modified the steering arm on the right hand side that comes out of the swivel hub apparantly u can turn the "ball" upside down this bit is easy but how do you make and adjustable drag link
What do you want to achieve ? My draglink put a huge dent in my shock so I bought an adjustable one. Theyre not cheap-bout $300 from memory.
brokelux
08-09-2005, 06:56 PM
want to get the bottom of the drag link away from the springs as when its flexed up then the drag ling will hit on the u bolts causing the arm to break this has happened to me twice now and i want to put bigger suspension in the lux so this will make the problem worse

No but a mate of mine would have one or two lying around.

also any one out there got any idea how the wiring on the SR5 box goes??
the electronic one with a stick that has three selctions high range nuetral low range and and a button on it that activates 4wd
is it an electric motor that engages 4wd???
has anyone had many problems with these???
its a air operated or hydraulic actuator i believe, it moves the shaft locking mechanism along to lock in the front diff. I have had mine apart and understand how it works but dont really know how to explain only problem ive had is when my battery crapped itself and leaked acid on one of the hoses >:(

Just been reading about your project.
The problem with the R151 is you are trying to fit an R151 to a bell that is for a R154. The R154 has a 30mm longer input shaft and it is only available in Toyota cars, eg Supra's. The R150/151 are for 4WD's.
I guess you realise that the transfer you have fitted will need a separate trans ECU wired up for it to work as it's an ADD transfer.
Before you spend any more money on this what mods are you having done to your input shaft and what trans is it out of ?

sounds like u have done your homework
yes your right on all accounts
currently getting the input shaft lenghtened by 30 mm and having a sleave made up for the throw out race
yes its electronically activated 4wd but i work for a company that has a sparky too so this isn't a real drama
yeah its a lot of trouble but its worth it

That could be interesting from a strength point of view.
The best and strongest way is to use a W series bell from a Supra engine which I guess is what you just cut ;D and use this adapter from Marks. All bolts up with no bits to break.
ADAPTER (http://members.iinet.net.au/~ozrunner/AdapterR150.html)
I assume your truck was a live axle 22R with a manual select chain transfer, ie no button on the lever?

well yes it will be interesting to see how stong its going to be but i recon if done properly it will handle it.guess only time will tell.
no i didn't cut the w series bell housing they are too hard to come by i'll keep it for a rainy day ;)
"The adapters thickness is counteracted by having an equal thickness
spigot bearing housing extension machined to fit the existing crank section."
this is the bit that really worries me flywheel adapters really scare me infact they petrify me. i would rather break my input shaft than have the flywheel cut my car in half
your right on all accounts as far as what it used to be but she aint anymore.
cheers Doug
brokelux
20-11-2005, 04:31 PM
k i'm confused
i know its not hard too do
but i was reading about that adapter and if i got that i would still be left with the same problem again.- bellhousing too long
so why would u use that adapter if you had a bell housing that bolts that gearbox to my motor anyway ???
the only reason i can come up with is that its so damn hard to find that particular bell housing
ozrunner
21-11-2005, 12:11 AM
no i didn't cut the w series bell housing they are too hard to come by i'll keep it for a rainy day
Ok if you still have the W series bell then there is no need to lengthen the R151 input.
You will find the W series bell is the correct length for an R151 input so with the use of the Marks adapter the R151 will then bolt straight up to the W bell as per the pics and then onto the engine as its the factory W series.
this is the bit that really worries me flywheel adapters really scare me infact they petrify me
Its not a flywheel adapter as your flywheel bolts up as per normal. It will be a small round machined section that bolts onto the back off the flywheel using longer bolts to support the spigot bush, ie if the input shaft is moved back 10mm because of the adapter then the spigot bush also needs to come back 10mm. Thats all it is just a relocated spigot bush housing.
Also forget the ADD button transfer and swap the input shaft and splined adapter sleeve from the ADD transfer into your transfer and it will then bolt up to the R151 and you have what you had before and not have wiring or ECU to worry about.
All very simple really ;D
JD
brokelux

It will be a small round machined section that bolts onto the back off the flywheel using longer bolts to support the spigot bush
so the longer bolts are actually the flywheel bolts?

Yes.
So why won't the transfer bolt up if you swap the inputs etc ?
brokelux
23-11-2005, 01:01 AM
ok the bolt pattern on the r151f gearbox is completly different.
if the fly wheel bolts are long i class that as a flywheel adapter.
makking the flywheel bolt longer weakens them.
i like to live on the rev limiter
i do not want the fly wheel to cut my car in half at 6000rpm about 100 revs per second!!!!!!
i have seen this happen and i dont really want my legs to be chopped off
i like them attatched to my body
cheers Doug

ok the bolt pattern on the r151f gearbox is completly different.
One more try, ;D
But the transfer is bolted to the transfer adapter not the gearbox as per your pics above with the ADD transfer bolted up to the R151.
If you now swap the ADD transfer input shaft into your original non ADD transfer it will then bolt up and you don't need to worry about an ECU etc etc.
I did this 13 years ago after coming across the same problem with a 4cyl transfer as I did want ADD. The R series has a different output shaft spline count than the 4cyl G series trans but if you swap the R series transfer input shaft into a 4cyl transfer it will then mount up. Check these pages.
http://members.iinet.net.au/~ozrunner/5Speed.html
if the fly wheel bolts are long i class that as a flywheel adapter.
Hmmm very common mod used by hundreds but your call. I think you will be pulling the gearbox very soon with a broken input shaft ;D
brokelux
23-11-2005, 01:56 AM
so now we have a transphere adapter as well as a gearbox adapter???
ozrunner
23-11-2005, 02:02 AM
Look at the pic of your new setup above.
You have a bellhousing
Followed by a R151 trans
Followed by a transfer adapter (or intermediate housing) the one with the levers, which is what the transfer bolts to, not the trans.
Followed by a transfer.
Put the ADD input shaft into your old chain transfer and it will then bolt up to this housing.
brokelux
23-11-2005, 02:13 AM
ok that transpher in the transfer i paid good money for to suit that transmission give me a minute i'll post a pic of my old transpher and new one side by side then u might see wat i mean

23-11-2005, 02:27 AM
I was begiining to think that was the problem.
I previously asked if your old one was a chain transfer and you said yes ;D
Its not, that is a gear transfer.
There are still several options ;D
Go to a wrecker and swap the ADD transfer for a chain driven Non ADD transfer from a early 90's RV6 4Runner. It is manual shift and will bolt straight up and you can relocate the lever, or they may swap both the transfer and intermediate housing with a cash difference.
BUT ;D if you want to use the gear driven transfer for several reasons, ie crawler gears are available for it, plus you can fit duals transfers later if you do a lot of slow rock climbing then you can.
Marks also have an adapter that goes onto the R series intermediate housing that then allows this gear transfer to be used.
Personally if I was you I would seriously consider either of these options as the electric transfer you have can be a bitch to wire up if you can't shortcut it.
Can I assume you are in Perth?

ok i've finally had enough of cleaning my spark plugs due to not having my computer programed properly
(it takes about an hour to pull my plugs out and clean them)
so i've finally spat the dummy and got it into my (and the missus) head to get it tuned properly
last time it put out a measly 115KW at the wheels but its still undrivable past half throttle (stars missing and breaking down)
waddaya recon she will put out in KW after we program the puta properly????
