Well as most of you would know i picked up my new toy, a Suzuki Serria last weekend. Its going to be setup as a purpose built offroad 4x4, and for competing in Tough Tracks (formally Short Course) and the new event at LCMP the Superior All-Terrain Challage.

My mates and I had an old rally packer once called Venomous Maximus, and I've been wanting to use that name again since, so thats now the Zook's offical name.

I bought it off a mate, Steve, for the small sum of $4000. Steve has giving this thing a hard life, its driven every track at LCMP, and it shows on it. But he's put a lot of work into it so it can handle that kinda stuff with minimal damage.

Here's what I got for my $4000...
1992 Serria on a 1997 Coily Chassis
1.6 EFI Vitari Motor
Hilux Diffs front and rear, which are heavily braced.
Rancho 9000 shocks (rear are too short)
Custom 4 link front and rear (3 links with panhard rod) (1 Helm Joint at end of each control arm)
Rockhopper Series 3 Crawler gears (awesome low range!!)
ARB Airlocker in Rear Diff
Swift GTI seats
Uniden UHF
ARB Winch Bar with Warn 9000lb low mount winch
Custom roll bar and Fibreglass Hard Top (will be removing both)
Custom offset 15x8 White Wheels (will be for sale soon)
31x10.5 Bias Ply Baja Claws (also for sale soon)

And now some pics of it all.....

Picking the zook up from Maryborough....with the current suspension setup, and those bias ply claws and offset rims its not the most stable truck to drive. So we towed it the 2hr trip back to the Sunny Coast, which my V8 4Runner just ate up....towed it really well.

Back and home and after a quick wash....probably its first wash for a couple of years...
http://www.4wdlinks.com.au/albums/album445/aai.sized.jpg

The rear flex....the shocks are way too short on the rear...but not for long...
http://www.4wdlinks.com.au/albums/album445/aal.sized.jpg

The front flex, with more to go yet....flex's really nice!!

1.6 EFI Vitari Donk

Font suspension/diff setup, not much will be done to this, except mod the upper link so the castor is adjustable. Its out a fair bit becuase of the lift at the moment.

The front suspension/diff looking from behind
http://www.4wdlinks.com.au/albums/album445/aaw.sized.jpg

The rear suspenion...and hilux diff....heavily braced....but not too good for clearance...

The rear suspension/diff from the front
http://www.4wdlinks.com.au/albums/album445/aax.sized.jpg

Polished Alloy Snorkerl...this was wierd...so much work had gone into making a great looking snorkel...except there is no mounts on it....its held on with zip ties and a dodgy bracket near the snorkel head.

Swift GTI seats, checkerplate door trims...

I ripped the hardtop off last night....much better

Fitting the 15x10 MT Classic II wheels and 33x12.5 Radial Claws off the 4Runner. Looked awesome, but the wheels woudln't turn. All my balance weights are on the inside of the wheel and they hit the calipers on the hilux diffs, the IFS calipers must be smaller.

And now whats planned....

First off I need to get some stuff engineered, and then a roadworthy so it can then be registed in my name. So a lot of tidying up first is happening at the moment, and getting everything up to speed both engineering and road worthy wise.

Once it is registed in my name the real fun begins...I've hopefully bought some 15x8 beadlocked wheels with 35" radial claws to go on. So a little more lift, and a lot of guard trimming is going to be needed.

The rear diff/susp is going to be moved as far back on the chassis as possible to increase the wheel base, or maybe even a chassis extension to get some decent length out of it. The body will be cut into a ute at this stage too.

Then a full roll cage, half doors, custom guards to cover the rubber, and bits of other cool custom metal fab, which Kane from Komited Kustoms will be donating his time for.

So its going to be a totally different beast when its all done, and will have plenty of bling on it too!!!

I dont think you need any more lift, the longer wheelbase will help stability a lot

What can i say Twisty ? I just love the name you've given the zook "Venomous Maximus" has a nice ring to it !!

You for sure got a real good buy on this, not many competition 4wds already done up like that are readily availble at that price ! ;)

I am looking forward to the changes you'll be making to it and watching you compete in future events.

I think i need to work harder, make more money and get my project comp 4wd off the ground ;D

Thanks for all the comments guys.....I still can't believe the bargain I've got.....and it's still going to be a cheap truck even after I finish doing everything planned.....I just wish I could start cutting it up now....

Humpy - I think the extra lift is going to be needed to clear the 35" rubber if I want to keep some kind of guards on it. If I don't have to lift it more I wont.

As for taking it out on some tracks, I haven't yet, I'm hoping to try and get out this weekend, But its still very dodgy to drive with the coils that are in it (way too soft) So I've been waiting to get the other set of springs he's sending up.

I will be sure to get pics of its mayden vouge offroad but.

07-06-2005, 08:20 AM
Well I've picked up a good deal on some rims and tyres last night. I got 5 pretty much brand new 35x12.5 Raidal Claws on 4/15x8 Beadlock Wheels and one sunrasia for $2000.

The claws were used by Brent Perret in the LCMP GU Patol in the international winch challange last year and that is it. So they have some chunks in them, but tread depth wise a brand new!!! The beadlocks are the green and yellow ones of the old LCMP Cruiser.

Everything is still working out good money wise...heres how it looks so far....
$4000 purchase price
-$250 sold the 31" claws and white wheels
-$400 sold the hardtop
---------
$3350
----------
+$2000 5/35" Claws and Beadlock Rims
----------
$5350 stoked!!!!

I will keep a tally of the $$$ spent from start to finish so you's can all keep track of it....

09-06-2005, 11:31 AM
I've also been told by my mates that it has to be Venomous Maximus II since our old Rally Packer was Venomous Maximus....so the zooks name has been changed a little.

Twisty
14-06-2005, 03:58 PM
Well the deal for the claws and beadlocks fell through....I gave my mate the money to put a deposit on them while he was out at LCMP on the weekend and it turns out they are Bias Ply claws, which I'm not really keen on........so now I'm shopping again for tyres and wheels.........Grimace's 37's would be nice for $1200, but I think I was pushing it to get 35's under it nicely, let alone 37's.....

15-06-2005, 05:51 PM
Hey Twisty why are you not so keen on the Bais Ply Claws??

Btw i thought Brent Perret used Radial Claws all the time??

anyway hope all goes well for you finding the right tyres 8)

Twisty
16-06-2005, 08:13 AM
Yeah, that what I thought about Brent too, which is why I didn't question wether they were radial or bias. But for some reason he ran them for the Extreme International Winch Challange.

I spoke to Brent about them, and he said they are awesome offroad, but horrible on the black stuff, and I kinda want to be able to drive it out to LCMP and on the black stuff to start with, as I wont have my own car trailer for while.

Thought I'd post a bit of an update on Venomous Maximus II...

Haven't done a great deal to it, it's still not driveable over about 40km/hr....but that's getting sorted at the moment. Seems to be mainly from the castor being way out with the big lift, and worn ball joints in the steering....

i got some 15x7 mags and sh!tty 31's for it last weekend off a mate for $150.....which will be good for the daily driver tyres.....I've still got to get some legal 31" rubber to put on them yet before the road worthy.

I've got the other springs and 80 series landcruiser steering box now, which Steve sent up from sydney. I put the heavier duty springs in this week and it reduced the body roll heaps.

Here's a phew pics of how its looking at the moment...

Am going down to Brissy on sunday morning to check out some comp rubber and rims which I will hopefully buy. They are 36x12.5 Super Swampers on 15x8 Beadlocks.

Here's a pic of them...

Which should look pretty cool on the zook.......

oi Twist, did you give old mate a ring about the roadworthy?

whats the go with the 1.6 Vit engine and the different body on a different chassis? will they be a hurdle to overcome?

Twisty
24-06-2005, 04:12 PM
Nah not yet Mick....will do soon but and I'll let you know how I get on :)

Well I didn't get down to look or buy the swampers and beadlocks on the weekend, but I am heading down tonight to check them out and make an offer. So all going well I will hopefully own my first set of swampers, and my first beadlocks by 8pm tonight.

But I was so itching to get some big rubber on the zook I went down to a mates plave on sunday and picked up his 35" Bias claws to stick on the zook, so we had something cool to look at while we had some sunday arve beers....and heres the result.

These two random blokes were working next door, and have never seen a zuke that big in there life....they were pretty stoked.

Well I'm not the proud new owner of swampers and beadlocks :(

I drove for about and hour and a half in the pouring rain last night, only to get there, and find out that the guy has made out there condition to be a lot better than what they were. >:(

Claiming them all to be 80% tread, when only two were, two others were more like 60% and then the spare only had about 30%, and had a hole in the sidewall. Then all the rims had lots of surface rust, and one also had a crack in the welds for the beadlocks....which he said was a common accurance ??

But anyway now I'm cashed up to buy some rubber, so the hunt begins....

Foubries at Marooka are selling the 36x12.5 Super Swampers brand new for $315ea :o which is looking mighty tempting. Or stick to a more road friendly tyre and get 35x12.5 Radial Claws (I think around $350ea)??

decisions....decisions..... :-\

Edit:- just got a quote on 35" Radial Claws - $315ea. also....

30-06-2005, 03:31 PM
What's the reason with going for the 80 series steering box ?

Twisty
30-06-2005, 03:36 PM
Yeah I'm not sure...it came with the Zuke....he said he payed $600 for it :o and it seems a little overkill for the job.

I sort about selling it and just getting the usaul IFS Toyota job, but I'll see what happens.

But it does need it badly...the Vitari Box that is on there has a really small arm on it, so it takes heaps of turns of the wheel to get to full lock.

http://www.4wdlinks.com.au/albums/album445/abl.sized.jpg

You can see the difference in size between the 35" Radial Claw (on the left) and the 35" Bias Ply Claw
http://www.4wdlinks.com.au/albums/album445/abk.sized.jpg

Allthough the radial isn't mounted on a rim yet, I will compare again once I get rims. Which at this stage will most likely be 15x10 white wheels...which will get beadlocks welded on later in the year.

Twisty
01-07-2005, 10:26 AM
I've also cut of the slider on the drivers side and am doing the passenger side on the weekend, and am also removing Suzuki's stupid idea of attached some crappy plastic to the body. The plastics were missing on mine, and just the sheet metal is attached to was left, creating a great rust trap. They are pretty easy to remove, and it looks heaps better with them off.

You can just see the white dots along the sill that I've marked on with a white out pen. This is wear I marked each spot weld location, before getting to it with the grinder.
http://www.4wdlinks.com.au/albums/album445/abm.sized.jpg

You then just grind each spot weld location until the metal comes off, and you left with a nice and smooth, and most probably rusty sill.
http://www.4wdlinks.com.au/albums/album445/abn.sized.jpg

http://www.4wdlinks.com.au/albums/album445/abo.sized.jpg

The majority of it is just surface rust, so it will just get tidied up for now. But eventually i plan to get some decent angle iron welded in for a little more strength.

The guy who had the chrome 15x10's and 33" wranglers that I was supposed to pick up on friday has dissapeared :-\ luckily I haven't payed him anything.

He was supposed to ring me on wednesday to arrange the pick up on friday, but I never recieved the call. I went to where he works, which is where I looked at the wheels and tyres, and the business changed hands during the week, and the guys there knew nothing of him :(

So I'm now on the hunt again for some nice 15x10's.....

Heres some pics of what I got done last weekend......You would have seen in the pics above how I got rid of the shitty sill brackets the the plastic crap clips on to.......Well on the weekend my mate Matt had some bling checkerplate lying around, so we took it down to Kanes at Komited Kustoms and I borrowed his gillitine and sheet metal bender to fold of soem new sill guards (aka rust hole covers) and they came up a treat.

When the proper buildup starts some decent thickness angle iron well be welded in...but this will get is pass the road worthy.

I also finished bogging all the side, and removing the autoparts locator stickers, and gave that a quick coat of non matching red paint...

Heres the pics....

Well I want to get the Zook driving good over the next couple weeks, so last night I pulled the front lower control arms for 2 reasons.

1. The drivers side one had a nice bend in it, making the diff not sit square.

2. With the amount of lift it has, there is absoltuely no castor, making driving the zook quite scary.

Then if this doesn't fix it, a high steer setup will be made up.

Heres a couple of pics.

The two lower arms, you can see the bend in the one at the back.
http://www.4wdlinks.com.au/albums/album445/abt.sized.jpg

You can see by the pinion angle just how rotated the diff is. The driveshaft was actaully bent up.
http://www.4wdlinks.com.au/albums/album445/abu.sized.jpg

Where it will sit with the new arms made up. You can see the pinion has dropped atleast a couple of inches. All the spring perches and steering links sit better now too.

Yeah the rear control arms haven't been lengthened to suit the lift it's got, so the rear diff is pulled forward quite a bit. The front diff sits forward a couple of inches over std.

Eventually the wheel base will get streched by a couple feet when the good part of the buildup starts.

At the moment is looses a heap of travel with the 35's....they scrub if you take a corner hard enough from the body rolling over....but jeez it's turning some heads driving it around.

Once the guard trimming is done, no travel will be lost at all, I'm hoping to actually gain a bit of travel once I'm finished with it.

Yeah its going to be, I still keep having different ideas on how to do it all...but it might have to happen sooner than later now, as it looks like Kane might be heading out to the mines for a phew months to get some big $$$ together for his workshop.

Since I've hopefully got the road worthy sorted it can all happen now....but I want to do it properly the first time and don't want to rush it, so it might wait till next year yet and I'll keep running the 31's offroad.

Still having some small trouble getting the road worthy, but am getting there.

It went into Northcoast 4x4 yesterday to have the front air-locker fitted, and I should get it back this arve. I just payed to have it fitted to the centre, so will do the wiring and air lines myself.

Also picked up an old FJ40 front guard yesterday to have a play with. The plan is to get a set of 4, re-inforce them enough to take the weight of the zook, then bolt them onto the zook to cover the 35's.

http://www.4wdlinks.com.au/albums/album445/DSCF1121.sized.jpg

http://www.4wdlinks.com.au/albums/album445/DSCF1120.sized.jpg

The plan is to run them the normal way on the front, like on the white zook pictured below, but without the side rails. Then on the back, spin them around. I also thought about using wrangler flares as they also bolt up to flat panels, but they are a little more $$$ and dont have as much width.

Thought I'd also tally up what it has cost me so far as I was doing at the beginning of the thread.

$4000 purchase price
-$250 - sold the bias ply claws and flipped white wheels
-$400 - sold the hardtop
-$100 - sold the roll bar
---------
$3250
---------
+$150 (Shit Gold Mags, and All-Terrains)
+$50 (2nd hand 31" Kuhmo Mudders, Bargain!)
+$1240 35x12.5 R15 Mickey Thomson Radail Claws
+$1200 15x8 Mickey Thomson Classic II Alloy Wheels
+$700 2nd hand Air-Locker for front diff (was for the 4runner)
+$600 Fit front Locker, custom brakelines, diff bearings + more
+$700 Warn 24V Highmount Winch
-------------
$7190 TOTAL
--------------

Not too bad....can get back around $800 for the ARB Winch Bar and Warn 9000lb lowmount winch (let me know if your interested). Then only a phew more expensive things to buy.
4x Rancho 9000's - $800
4x Beadlock Kits - $400-$500

And my new toy!!! Warn 24v Highmount Winch....this thing has been used twice in its whole lifetime....My mate bought it off his old next door neighbour who had it on he's old MQ. He got it for a score at $500. I got it off my mate for $750.....It came with everything, winch, controller, canvas cover, original manual etc.....and from what I've read, I'm even getting this winch for bloody cheap!! I think new they retail around $3000.

The zook will get a full separate 24v system just for winching. A 24v alternator will be installed, then twin sealed odysey batteries will go behind the seats....This should get the zook up to speed for winch challange type comps. A third sealed battery, will also be installed behind the seats for all other electrical duties.

Sorry about this Twisty, but I've got to ask a stupid question here, but what is the differance between a high to low mount winch?

Ok...heres a phew of the differences that I know of...and found while searching the net. The first reason I wanted one, is every comp you go to thats all they run, so there must be a reason for it....then the more I looked into it, the more the highmount, and even the 24v setup made sense.

Here's a pic of each type.
Lowmount
http://www.gowarn.com/images/products/XD9000.jpg
No Load = 38ft/min
8000lb Load = 6.88ft/min

Highmount (12V)
http://www.gowarn.com/images/products/M8274-50.jpg
No Load = 73.4ft/min (almost double)
8000lb Load = 6.1ft/min

You can see ny just looking at the pic that the highmount has a lot bigger drum, and wouldn't be effected by winching on extreme angles as much with all the wire being wound on to one side....if you know what I mean. The no load speed is a plus of the highmount, being almost double of the low mount. I'm pretty sure the 24v highmount had a slightly higher load speed than the 12v specs above too. Also the 24v Motor also doesn't run as hot as the 12v motors, something to do with more volts/less amps = less heat, which doesn't hurt the motor as much.

Thats as bout as much as I could find just then.....and know off the top of my head.....if anybody else has a better way of explaining it all, and any figures, please post up.

06-09-2005, 11:57 PM

lol...yeah its about time I did something with the thing.....its been sitting in the garage for almost 5 months now.

I would have liked to have put it in the rear of the 4runner, but it would have been used mainly for doing circle work on the beach, and the occasional burnout, rather than extreme tracks....atleast it'll get used properly in the zook!!! can't wait to test it out!!

Just ordered a Superior Engineering Double Arm which will help fix the very poor steering setup on the zook. They were really helpful on the phone, and said I should have the product within 3-4 working days.

We looked into making one ourself by getting a drivers side arm, then flipping it over and welding it on top of the passenger side, but for a $150 for the Superior one, it isn't worth the effort of even thinking about it.

Isn't the low mount quicker under load ?

8000lb load = 6.88ft/min compared to highmount 8000lb load = 6.1ft/min which is the important figures ?
Was the 24V load speed that much different or only marginal

Yep, the lowmount is quicker under load, but not by that much. I couldn't find the 24v specs yesterday, but have only been told that the 24v high-mounts are quicker under load than the 12v highmounts.

The no load speed is pretty critical in winch challange type events though, as you have to spool up all the wire after each completed winch. So say you have a crap load of cable out, and you've got to a point where you can drive the rest, the highmount will be twice as quick as the lowmount to spool in all that extra cable - which = valuable seconds.

Its got a 1.6 16v EFI Vitari Motor....and that along with the rockhopper transfer case reduction gears (reduces high and low range gearing), and hilux diff ratios (4.3 over the suzi 3.7) alows it to spin the 35's quite easily. It'll do around 110km.hr now at about 4000rpm.

The downside to this, is when running the 31's it has a top speed of about 90km/hr at 4500rpm.

Twisty

Well I've sodl the old bar and winch on the weekend, so it'll be getting made up shortly....

The manual that came with the highmount shows how to make the cradle up, so I will draw that part up in autocad and get it lasercut, and then folded up. But I'm unsure with how to mount it to the chassis at the moment.

I'd say the winch will get recessed back into the grill, then a small chassis extension should be enought make it all sit nicely. Then once thats all mounted up, I'll probably do a stinger type bar, and a bit more tubework.

After chatting with Glen Dobbin the last couple days, we've sorted out how I want to do my A-Frame joint. This thing kicks arse, allowing 360 degress of rotation of the diff in one way, and 180 degress the other way.

http://www.dobbinengineering.com/

Heres a pic of the std. kit he does.
http://www.dobbinengineering.com/New%20Images/Aframekit1but.JPG

Which usally mounts like this.
http://www.4wdlinks.com.au/albums/album445/Diff_Joint.sized.jpg
Which I wasn't too fussed on, if you needed to change the diff housing for some reason, you'd have to get a new outer sleeve made up to weld to the diff.

So on my kit, there wont be a U on the main knuckle, instead, the ring of the sperical joint will be welded to the main knuckle, the a-frame will be welded to the outer sleeve. This will allow the a-frame to be bolted on off with just 3 bolts.

The full kit is costing $450 including frieght.

Nah sorry Gary, I want my first trip to LCMP in the zook to be with some big rubber, and I don't have the money at the moment....all the $$$ are going towards getting this thing ready to chop!!

I fitted the highsteer last night, using the Double Arm from Superior Engineering (top blokes). I haven't been able to test test it all properly yet, as I've got the wrong ball joint ends, but the steering looks a lot more safe now. The only problem I might have is the draglink hitting the chassis on up-travel, if thats the case, superior are going to make me up one that isn't quite as high.

There is only two things left to get sorted on the front end now....

1. A Correct Length pan-hard rod, which also needs the mounts modified so that it sits on the same angle as the drag link (nearly horizontal)

2. A new Superior Engineering Tie Rod (Details off there website below)

http://www.superiorengineering.com.au/

Description
Superior Engineering Manufactures the strongest Tie Rods on the market. We use a Heat Treated 4140 chromoly in 33 od solid.
Larger than standard tie rod ends are used and we eliminate the original style of tierod ends where the damper would usually go through.
This Chromoly is rated at a whopping 55 tonnes per sq Inch to bend. What chance would a hilux have of bending them.

Had a mates wedding on the weekend and was chatting to Brent Perret there (son of Landcruiser Park) and he was pushing me to have it ready for the Genie Winch Challange in mid November. Heres a phew pics of the kit.

The U on the spherical joint on the end of the knuckle will get welded to the diff, so the the cross bolt is mounted verticaly. The A-Frame arms will get welded to the outler sleeve of the knuckle, then up to the normal bush type joints which will be mounted to the chassis.

Just a question Twisty,
Are you putting locktite onto the pins thread ?
How come the threaded area doesn't have a tab washer slot going along threads length to allow for a tab lock washer, this would have been an improvement on design & would be peace of mind just in case locking nut comes loose.

Shouldn't the U section be welded to the diff with the cross bolt horizontally as it lays in the photo? Otherwise you have nothing to give you up and down movement vertically at the joint!

The threaded section does have that slot, you just can't see it in the picture. When it all bolts up, its the same setup as a wheelbearing nut....you can see the tab on the inside of the washer, which goes into the slot, then you bend the sides of the washer over the first nut, then put on the 2nd nut as well. So there shouldn't be much chance of it coming loose.

Well thats what I thought too Gojeep...but this is what Glen wrote in his email to me.

When mounting this unit you will have to mount the 16mm cross bolt vertical
not horizontal like the old plastic type bush

I then discussed this with him on the phone and he said while the spherical joint will probably withstand the loads of being mounted with the cross bolt horizontally, it is not designed to work with the side to side forces from the A-Frame. With the cross bolt mounted vertically, the spherical joint will have enough movement to take up any twisting of the diff, which I wont have too much of, as both the lower control arms and the a-frame are going to be of similar lengths.

Feel free to discuss this if you disagree but, as I am knew to all this, and am only going on what Glenn has said and I'm open to any ideas.

So long as both the upper A frame and lower arms are of similar lengths, as you mention, there would be little up and down movement needed in that joint. The fact it is a spherical joint it should allow enough movement.

Still no decent progress on the zook.....I picked up Kanes (Komited Kustoms) cheaper pipe bender ($150ish) this week, and was hoping to get stuck into the roll cage this weekend, but turns out Kane doesn't have the right Dies for the tube sizes needed to meet CAMS and Winch Challange specs. So am still trying to sort what to do....Some new Dies to suit cost around $100-$150 ea, so its probably cheaper just to pay someone to bend it for me :-\

http://www.4wdlinks.com.au/albums/album445/DSCF1210.sized.jpg

Some more new parts from Superior Engineering arrived this week too.....

A new Chromoly Tie Rod (dont think this puppy will bend)

Two Lower shock mounts to replace the dodgy setup for the front. (will probably get another pair of these for the rear)

Another double arm for the highsteer. The original superior double arm was too high, and the drag link would have hit the chasis with flex (see a couple pages back). So I sent that back and Superior made me another double arm, which drops the draglink down, allowing plenty of clearance to the chassis. Hopefully I'll get all the new steering fitted on the weekend.

The superior engineering high steer is all fitted now, as well as the new Rock Rod (Tie Rod). The steering looks bullet proof now, and the zook drivers beautifully, with no more slop in the steering. (Will get pics of the setup soon)

Well I just fitted the Bosch 85 Amp Alternator.

It pretty much just bolted straight in, with the need to drill out one tapped hole, and juggle a couple of brackets around to suit.

Had to swap the pulley's over as the bosch one comes with a V belt, where as the Vitari donk runs a ribbed type one. Luckily the shafts were the same diameter, so the only hard bit was getting the pulley off the old alternator, which due to my lack of a workbench and some tools, had to be sacraficed in order to to undo the nut.

I will also have to get a longer belt, as the alternator is twice the size, so it has swung outwards from the block quite a bit.

Couldn't get any pics as my memory card has sh!t itself, but will get some when I get a new card and post the up.

The rear control arms ready to install.

The custom bar, which came up ok, but I'm not real happy with the shape.....but for the time being, its better than nothing.......and it only cost me $28.

All I've got to do now before the meetup is paint the bar and control arms, then install them, and install some new power steering lines which are getting made up today.

Yeah I can't wait!! Its my first proper outing in it, the first trip out was only about 15mins worth up at Noosa....so its going to be great to have a whole weekend in it!!! Will also be the first try out for the front air locker, as it has only been used in the garage so far.

Got some pics of the new superior engineering high steer at lunch when I went home to paint the bar and control arms.

I got a 75 Series King Pin Arm for the drivers side, as my original ones had a smaller tie rod hole then the superior rock rod. I got this from Gold Coast 4WD Wreckers for $33. Got fantastic service from them, and they were the cheapest of all the wreckers I rang in SE Qld.

The low profile Superior Engineering Double Arm

The final steering setup. The panhard still need to be raised to match the angle of the draglink to get better handling, but even now the zook drives 200% better, with no slop at all in the steering.

yeah the only issue I will have on the weekend is the 33's rubbing.....as I haven't had time to put the 33's on and sort out some bumpstops to stop them hitting. The 35's wouldn't stand a chance offroad.

Well you have a day....Would it be possible to like make some temporary wheel spacers? Or borrow some friends wider wheels?

Twisty
26-10-2005, 01:34 PM
spacers wont fix anything.....the guards just need to be trimmed to suit the bigger rubber, but I don't want to do that before I get the road worthy sorted.

But since I'm not driving it out anymore I will probably take all the flares off for the weekend now, so it wont scrub as bad.

Well Dave I just got back from ARB & as it turns out my problem was a melted airline in the engine bay.
In the wisdom of L/Rover they don't have an engine heat shield on the passenger side & as a result of me having only one battery & having to run the engine while winching the factory & compressor & airlocker lines have started melting. The air line has shrunk up on itself sealing the line up therefore no air was getting to the actuator in the diff.
ARB replaced the line & put in new fittings free but I had to pay for labour - $85. :(
I didn't mind as it wasn't a fault on there behalf so I have to put in a heat shield or maybe some heat wrap around the wiring in that area.

Yeah, dunno about Hilux Hill yet.....see how the nerves go.....I reckon it would drive that too but....its just the driver I'm not sure about.

Next weekend should be good but, as the old owner of the zook is up from Sydney, so thats why we are taking it out. He has drivin every track and hill climb in the whole park in it, with only 31's on. But he's an awesome driver, and doesn't have much fear. So he'll probably show me how its done out there.......I'm still a bit of a pussy ;D

Yeah, I didn't say they couldn't test drive it, I actually drove it in there, which is a bit stupid, but it stands out like dogs balls and it bound to be defected.....which is why I try to tralier it everywhere.....the only reason I want it registered is so I can compete, and go to LCMP....

In a certain class the competitors have to be roadworthy so it is fair, otherwise its anything goes and whoever has the most money has the best toy.

Must it be registered before you compete? I didn't think it mattered.

Your 4x4 has to be registered to enter just about all comps in QLD. The only one in QLD thats doesnt, as far as I'm aware, would be the Outlaw Class in the Superior All Terrain Challange.

If you just want to go to Landcruiser Park and do tracks, your 4x4 also has to be registered for there insurance reasons. I was asked by them at the Forum meetup wether it was registered or not as I didn't have the plates on it and had towed it out.

Since I'm taking the zook out 4x4ing tomorrow I thought I'd make up some wider flares to cover the 4runner's 33's, as when they are bolted on the zook, the offset of the 15x10s makes them hang way out the guards.

I've also got softer springs in then what i ran at LCMP for the forum meetup, so I would more than likely rip the 3 remaining factory flares off anyway. The factory flares were a barstard to get off, but they are now happily stored in the wheelie bin.

To make the new flares I bought some garden edge strip from bunnings. Its about 6 inches wide, and 6m long, and was only $30. I also bought self drilling screws to mount it with, but when I got home, I had a great idea to use zip ties....which worked even better than I had thought. They will also aloow quick and easy removal if needed.

Now for some pics....

I just get edging to length with the grinder.
http://www.4wdlinks.com.au/albums/album445/DSCF1392.sized.jpg

I used about 6 zip ties per flare, and drilled two holes about 1" apart for the zip tie to go through. The garden edge sits on the mounts that are used for the factory flare.
