Love it!
Roughly how much do you think you've spent on suspension? (very roughly - PM me if you don't want to advertise)
Are the driveline upgrades essential for running 33"+ tyres with a fairly standard powerplant? Or is the standard strength gear strong enough (i'm not super hardcore, but i'm used to toyota strength and NA diesel power!)
(EDIT: i guess what i really mean is HD axels and diff's)
Do you reckon the standard guards could clear 33's or 34's with the suspension work you've done (we'll say a 4-5" lift)?
Sorry about all the Q's...weighing up whether i should buy a 'POS' rangie when Mr. Tax Man payes me back!
looking really good dude cant wait till you start chopping it up :D
and for future mods you forgot about the alternater ;) ;D
sweet lookin rangie!! we gonna see ya at Rover Park?

well where do i start :D
first of all about costs - I calcualted that knowing what i know know i can rebuild my car to what you see there for around $20000 includes my original purchase price of $8000.
Most things arnt needed and I pretty confident i could build a better truck for less.
about strenght... I broke a front and a rear diff in two outing on 33s... they were old and abused but I guarantee your running a risk using standard rover diffs with anything bigger than 31s.
If you do a 4" spring lift and have a similar shock/suspension setup to mine you will get more flex than I do at current (as my tyres are acting as bumpstops on the inner wheel wells)
Depending on what wheel your using (heavy offset or not) If you running the standard alloys You will get away with not cutting the guards but you wont be able to tackle offroad stuff at speed as the compression is forced upon the diff differently and cause em to rub alot as they travel up as the weight of the vehicle is held on the springs for longer, where as during articulation and slow offroading the angle of the wheels puts them in the wheel well and away from the guards.
To fit 33s with a 4" spring lift I would reccomend fitting heavier offset wheels (to gain your stance) and cut out about 1" from the guards... dont be afraid to cut the guards as done properly it looks pretty damn good.
I had my rover with the stadard alloy wheels and not cut guards it looked funny (IMHO) with 255/85 (about a 33) tires and such a big lift without the extra stance (photos below) It was also abit to tippy, since gaining the much needed stance and chopping the guards i have been much happier with its stability.
http://img25.exs.cx/img25/9706/sidebfgs9yg.jpg
http://img259.echo.cx/img259/6659/bfsfront1xd.jpg
with the 33s on standard rims
and offroad with no body mods justthe suspension lift

http://img25.exs.cx/img25/4319/2rrcrossormeau2405049dc.jpg
http://img25.exs.cx/img25/340/3rrcrossormeau2405045ys.jpg
as you can see its a damn tight fit on the stadard alloys and if the wheels where any further offset I would have done abit of damage.

That's whats turning me off a rangie :P I presume alot of that 20g went on the driveline?
So what breaks exactly? Center or ring/pinion or both? Would i just be wanting to fit heavy duty centers/rings/pinions or would a locker by itself do? Would standard axels do? I presume i need to replace everything as to not leave a weak link.
As far as i can tell all the really expensive (well, stuff i can't do myself) stuff is beefing up the axels/diff's....
By the way i reckon it looks kinda cool with the skinnier tyres on! But i can see the need for a bigger offset.
Thanks for all the info! I didn't expect such a detailed reply!
Duck, can you send me or stick up a pic somewhere of yours? Did you happen to buy that off 'Rangie' - in the 'for sale' section?

IMHO the order of strength in a new rover diff is
1. Axles
2. Cross Pin & centre
3. CW&P
but over time the centre cross pin wears and in a used diff that becomes the weakest link.
If you fit just a locker (arb/detroit etc) you are most likely gonna start destroying axles. The CW&P imho should be ok with 33s... my CW&P were ok the only thing that damaged them was the bits from the side gears getting wedged in between :(
Now not to mention ontop off all the bits mentioned above. The front also Has CVs.... these are about asweak as the axles... when steering in a straight line they have a greater deal of strength but as soon as you load them up while at full lock your strength is very minimal and they will bust way b4 an axle gives way (also note the earlier cvs, pre 88, were slightly stronger).
If you inted on running 33s I beleive the maxi drive or jacmac locker and axle upgrade is the only way to go if you want to be able to give it sum. (this isnt to say you wont break anything but it will be fairly strong). Maxi Drive suggest you fit the AUE2522 cvs from an earlier 110 defender and this is IMHO a great option but Get onto the boys at Haultech in Logan village (QLD) about their Ring welded and heat treated CVs (much stronger) that are currently been used in sum of australias top competition buggies (an in my car).
I beleive the maxi gear is safe upto 35" rubber but then you will begin to start worrying about the CW&P holding out under larger loads in the rear end.
My maxi gear is all up for sale soon as now with the 37s I am too scared to go as hard as i would like, and a toy centre conversion is in order (welding the rear) ;D then maybe I will start test fitting sum 42s ;)

Is that background done in Scenarist?
d00d I have know idea my mate whipped it up for me ;D
just abit of tech to add guys... I am starting to contemplate the diff swap.
So far my options are
GU Front and rear - semi floating thou and I dont really like that, also front hubs are the weak link which is good because there cheap and easy to replace but they are not designed for full time 4wd application
80s Rear and Front with Custom nissan 9" centre conversion - so far this is the most appealing as it will be stronger and easier to get bit and peices for... i can heat treat and ring weld the CVs for more strength and the only thing to remember and match is the toyo and nissan ration front to rear.
Volvo Portals - Ok great idea but it means more $$$ to outlay upfront, but i get everything.
all the above options will give me better brakes, wider track, easier choice of wheel selection/availibility, strength, and allow me to run 39" Iroks ;D

Just new online and reading through the replies. Refering to dogbreaths question on running 33's, I have run 32's (235/85/16) on my rangie for the last 4 years. I only have a 2" lift on mine but when I fitted them I had no lift at all. The only mods that I had to do to stop the tyres rubbing was, I rolled the lip of the front guards, adjusted the steering stops so I didn't rub the control arms at full lock, I did have to cut a small section out of the rear inner guards but you can't tell because I removed the inner wheel arch seal off the door and stuck it to the wheel arch instead. Can't tell that the wheel arch has been cut and it still supplies the same mud sealing qualities as before. From memory I think that I put the left seal on the right wheel arch and vice versa because the seals now face in the opposite direction. I wouldn't say that I use my car hardcore, but it still gets into situations that most fourbys around wouldn't see. I take it as far as it will go with open diffs, and with the 32's on, in 4 years the only damage I have done to the driveline is, 1st outing I snapped the rear tailshaft because I broke the rear balljoint mount on the top of the diff housing, $40 bucks for a tailshaft and I straightened and re-welded the mount myself. Not a problem with that since. I also broke the rear diff about 3 years ago, replaced it with a 2nd hand unit and haven't had any problems with that since either.

no update on the tray, priority is in the drive train at the moment, I just found out sum bad news, i have MAYBE bent the rear diff :(
The tyres are 39.5x13.5x15 Bias TSL IROKS
I have a set of 33" Buckshot mudders for everyday wheelin now too. With these i get back that extra 3" of uptravel i lost when i had the 37" creepys on.
After i sort out this diff delemma i will be making it my duty to get as much travel out of the front with the 39" rubber on, so prepare for a very ugly looking front end rangie ;D

update o'clock
I have all the following items ready;
80series diffs (F & R)
2x warn 8000lb winches
4x second air beadlocks
12metres of seamless pipe (for custom suspension links)
Iroks arriving mid september (delayed again :( )
Reduction unit arrives end of year (cousin is bringin it back from europe for me)
I need sum heavy offset 15x8 wheels and sum 6mm sheet metal to make the mounts on the diffs.
Will be seting up a 3link+panhard front along with a double triangulated rear 4-link.
16" Procomp shocks for the rear and most prob go for 14" travel fronts.
Engine wise I not putting on the supercharger, just gonna fit the wolf. I need a second supercharger and i just wait for one to pop up at the right price, then ill consider puttin em both on.
I'll have sum photos of the gear and the custom work to follow ;D
After this is all set up an done ill be ordering a set of 30spline chromo axles and CVs from the states to go in the front end.
Rear will be welded (CIG) for now ;D

Trying to find who will do a body lift (1-2') legally?
Also 2" suspension. I have 2" block kit from 4x4Design & Eng. for the rear airbag so I need the springs & shocks to suit. I hear bilstein have just released a new shock & king springs have a custom spring that should combine for a good articulating set-up. I am fitting 33-34'' tyres once I sell my 31" M/T Claws.
P.S. I don't mind if the guards need a tickle to make it work.

Trying to find who will do a body lift (1-2') legally? - Getting sumone to do this for you will be $$$$
With 33 inch tyres and 2" spring and 2" body lift your guards 'should' ( :) ) be safe.
Bilsteins are xpensive but good, Konis are better :D
Lovells do a nice 2" lift spring. I can get sum from Shane (4WDStuff) on the outerlimits forum (i beleive they are $150 a pair) he has soft soft suckers all the way upto hard load carrying springs.

Enjoyed myself the other weekend......better than a retirement home! ;D ;D ;D
They would look super uber sexy under your heep.
Thinking of running fox air shocks up front, just trying to factor in cost etc etc, money is my current limiter so until i hit a high streak and stop goin out and spending all my coin on beer and woman, its gonna be slow goin :)
Might have to start selling afew toys :( , stereo (home theatre), RC crawler, the buckshots (mudders) are already up for sale.
The sooner i get sum $$$ the sooner i can complete all the bar work, rear tray and start the exo cage.
Hopefully have afew more pics to post up this weekend comin.
And would be real nice to have it drivable to take a trip to LCMP for WEROCK in a fortnight.

Brooksy ill prob head out there this saturday. Ill Pm you so as you can come see wats goin down.
I am scraping the airshock idea as the current airshocks are not gonne be upto the job.
A new style of airshock is due to be on the market end of the year (secret squirel) so until then ill just run coils and long arse 16" procomp shocks front and rear ;D
I am trying to obtain sum second hand coil overs or airshock though, so as to just temp and trial the front end out with em.
Here is a similar project to mine, only difference is i will always run the doors and have a part roof aswell as a part tray (not full tube rear)

Hey Grimace ,
have you spoken to Mick Gerard about Brothers Offroad.
Mick & I are getting Brothers Offroad to do some bar work & sliders, I'm getting suspension as well his name is Glenn. It's just a family business & he builds Land Rover competition trucks as well as all 4wd mods.
He has a 90" Defender that is his old comp. truck but he is building a chopped ute back '95 Disco that I am going to help him get ready before November. He has this 500HP V8 going in it with full cage bobbed rear that he's not sure if he will make tube tray or just naked.
Have a talk to Mick & if you need anything done keep them in mind as he may become a member of the GCLRC might be handy in club rep. in competitions ??

Brooksy - never herd of brothers offroad, but hopefully I can get intouch with them sumtime to have a look at their buildups.
No doubt theirs will be 100% better than mine (as mines is all booty fab) and the $$$ factor wont play into it asmuch for them, so should be good for me to see how to go about it when i decide to start spending more $$$ fine tuning everything.
Where about is this Brother Offroad located? I goin to hopefully check out a nissan diff, coil overed, chopped rangie tis arfternoon, wanna see as much as i can so i can decide if i am goin about it all the right way.
Not doin the airshock thing anymore, gonna wait till the new style (Australian Made) air shock is released ;) then i might give them ago ;D would luv to do coil over front but the $$$ atm are just not permitting.
Next years tax return will be spent on coilovers (for the front) if i dont already have em ;D\
In the mean time i am just trying to sell off all my junk to keep funds above the high tide mark :(
Hopefully will have the front end all sorted out and in this weekend and get started on the rear, will try get sum snap shots to post up ;D
Cheers
Anthony

Hey Grimace,
Glenn is situated in Capalaba at 3/9 Merrit st, his ph. no. 3245 1722. He is one of the most helpful & genuine guys you will meet.
I think he would be interested in your ideas & he could maybe help out with certain things. He is very competitive in his pricing as he doesn't have large overheads & isn't interested in getting to big.
He isn't pig headed & try & tell you what to do, he would rather give suggestions & things to lookout for & he isn't too proud to learn either.
Give him a call & pick his brain or maybe once you've spoken to him e-mail your work-in-progress & he might help if he can.

Thanks Rangie_Dude
veiwing the diffs from front, is a turn on, there is absolutely no links hanging below the tube height 8) w00t w00t.
Getting real clucky bout coil overs, and am hoping to find/learn sum ideas from afew others whom are into the same style of mods. (Glenn ;) )
The front lower links will prob end up being fixed lengths and the upper becoming fully adjustable.
Just not 100% sure if i wanna push the front diff forward a inch or two or not. Once i find a nice spot for it that alows nice unhindered flex, ill prob make solid lowers.
The adjustables will become spares (just incase).
At first impressions it seems to flex all to easy 8) but it has no panhard ATM.
Ill be posting all the arm lengths and heights etc etc and the figure i have for anti dive (in the front) once i have it all worked out.
The crossmember and clearance for the upper link should be interesting (hopefully have pics soon) and a full underbelly skid is on the cards.

Dude,
You wont bend these with 35" Simex.
If you want, I can build you some trailing arms that will not bend and can crank them to suit whatever lift you have.
I have the Scorpion arms in mine and I can build them as a replica of them...but heaps stronger.

HI Grimace...
I am interested to know who made your radius arms.
I dont have any radius arms any more.... If you mean the front lower (or upper) links. My mate is doin all the work.
Its 32NB Schedule 160 seamlesspipe (6.45mm wall).
I have an 86 Rangie that I sink all my pay into...am just in the process of getting a set of 35" simex...wheels are at the powder coaters now. I am worried that the rear trailling arms might bend.
d00d them rear trailing arms are a piss weak excuse for a link, definately get them addressed as soon as posibble, I bent mine on 33" mud terrains.
I would rather spend abit of time strengthening them up then having the whole arse end fail and destroy shocks and pinions and shafts while its at it.
Also the standard upper ball joint mount can be a weak spot and has been known to tear from the diff :o
Cheers
Anthony
P.S. Id be hitting micka up for the links he is gonna be making, they should be plenty strong. ;)

front bar 95% finsh, the coil overs are going to be mounted with two bars goin through the radiator support panel from the stinger to the chassis in the rear of the engine bay.
Upper coil over mount will prutrude approx 4" through the bonnet
taking the aircond and useless rads out of the way to get the winch as far back as possible (and closer to over the front diff)
http://www.buds4x4.com/outerlimits/rover_6.jpg
Bar setup and winch in, lightforces still to go on and metal plate to cover winch and fill in the blanks to be made up.

Engine and radiator are stock position.
Aircond is being turned into endless air so that rad was removed. Fitting aftermarket trans cooler in rear with small thermo so that was removed.
Coil overs wont arrive for atleast 4 weeks, and alot of stuff still to be done.
Already talking about completely changing the front end link setup :(
Hopefully picking up the Iroks and 17x9 rims by the end of this week, so ill be able to sort out the modification to the front guards (inners) for maximum flex (uptravel).
Goin slow, and alot of changes had been made since we started, and thinking about pushing the front diff forward 2" now aswell.
So with the rear back 8", the new wheel base will be around 110".

The rear panels glass and tailgate have been removed (tailgate & glass for sale cheap) the inner panel has been chopped and fuel tank has been removed.
Exhaust is out and also for sale.
Hopefully next week the whole back end will be nice and clean and gooone ready for the rear end links to begin.
Re: The front - alot of customisation shall begin to get as much uptravel as possible with the huge rubber. Wont be much but at the moment its got about 5" on bump travel and 2" (if that) under articulation travel.
The ride height at the moment is def low and fat, car is slightly wider than it is tall - about 1950 wide by 1900 tall (with 30psi in the tyres) so it will prob be brough up another inch and I may be getting the wheels offset a further 2" while i get the mechanical beadlocks fitted (not sure on that one yet).
But if it all goes ahead as per the above description the POS should be about 2050mm Wide and 1950mm tall 8)
I would also like to take this oppourtunity to thank Ryan from Fourbys ( http://www.fourbys.com.au/ ) whom has really done his best to look after me and goone out of his way many a times to help others and give endless amounts of info. Thanks again.

The sigma has been on its last legs ever since takin it to landcruiser.... the steering is loose, the struts are fawked, the busher are flogged :(
The car will have a full exo and the only time them tyres will be on it is when its offroad. There will be rubber from the bonnet to the exo tube over the front tyres and in the rear ill have sum flaps hangin off the tray. They Iroks will never be completely covered but i doin my best.

Coil overs are from Adrian @ Rangie Automotive...
He prefers to deal in 14" and smaller as the springs are easier to obtain (exspecially when you need different rates in a hurry).
I got Kings cause they are pretty much the best money can buy and i thought if i am gonna spend big ill buy big and get the most out of it.
They are 16" travel, 2.5" Remote resevoir units with at present 200 over 400 spring rate. ITS TALL and the ride adjustement will have to be set to the minimum.
In the end i beleive i will have around 5" spring lift (compared to standard rover) and its about 11" higher (in total) than a stock rangie. The vehicles total track (width) however will be almost 2 feet wider than standard.
