View Full Version : (DIY) Cheap Body Lift Blocks
I was down at the local trailer shop today when i spotted the perfect body lift blocks! :o Actually they were plastic rollers for boat trailers. There not 100% plastic so there no to hard, and You can buy it in big length's (cut it to ur own sizes), the biggest i saw was about 30cm. I imagine this stuff would be very cheap especially compared to $20 for a 2" block at some places :o
Cheers
P.s lets hear about other peoples cheap tricks ;D ;D
cut the fenders off and weld them on higher... beats buying a body lift....... ;D
I said cheap, not CHEAP ;) ;)
woud you use an oxy for that 8) ;)
You would be mad to pay $20 per block !
I bought some round mild steel and cut it to 2" blocks and drilled a 12 mm hole through them, easy and cheap !
All up cost me around $60 inc bolts. ;D

I've heard of boat rollers being used before - appearently with some success - but if you go the route - I'd suggest you ensure your regular checks include a carefull inspection of each one as they can deterorate over time.
I know a few that have used alloy stock too for a similar cost....I stupidly bought a US kit (hey it was a few years back & good Jeep advise was hard to get) and the dran thing cost m like $400 :'(
Over time I'm going to do what shedguy said - alla Onall4 pete's yella thing and move the falres up to allow bigger tyres with less lift (low CoG is where it's at 8)).....

Wooders,
Won't you still have to lift the rear as the flares can't be moved there?

Unbolt the rubber side flares, cut the bejezzus out of the sheet metal upwards & bolt flares back on :D :D

hack :D
when you have a bush pig, you do more damage in the bush than at home with the oxy, panels are to keep the mud off, paint it to stop rust!

When I did the body lift on the Mav' I bought 1 metre of HDPE (High Density Polyethylene) from a plastics mob (DOTMAR Engineering Plastic Products, Rocklea Ph. (07) 3274 1141) for $60. They cut it into 50mm blocks.
I sold the 10 blocks that I didn't need to a guy with a GU he wanted to do a body lift on, through the Patrol4wd yahoo group. 8)
The bolts (Hi Tensile 10mm dia., 250mm long (I think), washers and nylocks cost me $100. :o

I thought part of the fun of this was doing the stuff yourself and NOT paying for an over the counter kit like some pooncy wog buying bits for his new lancer??
The fun is getting out and driving the thing, not working on it.
But it all depends on the amount of time you have, and the amount of coin to throw at the car I guess.

I'm there with ya brother!!
There's nothing I'd love more than to go out and buy some big swampers, 5 link front etc. etc., but with all normal responsibilities (kids, wife, mortgages etc.) I can't.
If a small amount of mucking around will save me $$, I'll do it!! To the same end, I'll do as much work on the Mav' as I possibly can....I've always done this on all my vehicles and doing it myself is a big part of the fun!!!
Regards
A good lateral thinker will always weigh up the $ cost, vs the total cost, and then choose the most economical, value for money option.... compared to up front cost. ;)
And a forward thinker will grab a slab before the coin runs out :D
beer is for the average hilux driver...... :P

When I used to work shift work, the best way to get the body clock swung over, was to have a big night the night before.
Who you callin average anyway. I'll have you know I'm an above average hilux owner, with an above average hilux. And you're right about the spirits, I just talk about beer to make the peasants on the Forum feel at home.

The average Hilux driver is willing to spend a little more on beer in order to turn up the imagination to figure out a cheaper way to do that body lift.... ;)
After the time stuffing around with the home made job, and nearly comparable cost next time around I think I would just go out and buy the kit.... (I know this defeats the DIY fun, but it would leave more time to work on the not so fat x-member) :-\
