Well guys, I started this a couple of weeks ago and thought I'd better post some progress pics. I figure you all can help with your opinions on how to progress through some of the tricky areas. I have already posted these pics on another thread but I'll do it again.
23/03/05
1985 Bundera with chev V6 with mod plate purchased privately for $1500. It already has a 2 inch lift with Rancho 9000 shocks and yellow springswhich we think are Old Man Emu.

Towed it out to my Brother in laws property for us to play with.
10/04/05
Thrashed it around the place and generally had lots of fun ;D
BTW it had just rained which made it heaps better ;D ;D
11/04/05
Removed interior and entire wireing loom.

Removed front panels, doors and anything that joind the cassis to the body.

Then, with the help of the trusty tractor, removed the body.

Time for a bit of a wash
ALL PHOTOS ON PAGE 4
That failed miserably, the mud had been caked on for sooo long it was near on impossible to get off. So we took it inside and removed the engine and transmission.

Thanks again, Mr Tractor ;) Now it looked like this

Took out the rear diff ass and cleaned up the chassis a bit.

Now all I need to do is take out the front diff and get the body chemically dipped and painted, then ever so slowly every thing goes back together.

As far as the pics are concerned, Geocities seems to have a limit on how many times the photos are viewed. If they are not working, come back in an hour and they should be right.

No real concrete plans at the moment. Taking it as it comes.
2 in body lift to compliment the 2in suspension lift. Eventually a super6 and auto will go in but thats not for a while. Prolly after it all goes back together and get roadworthy. As far as any other mods go - I'm open for sugestions.

The chassis will stay black with a nice thick coat of fisholene or something similar, but I'll have a couple of pretty red bits underneath to match the original paint colour which will stay the same.

I'm kinda a little worried about that. I didn't think ahead and bag them separately. Instead they are all in one big tin. :(

Although I don't know heaps about the mechanics (engines etc.) It has been very easy and heap of fun pulling it all apart.
I have just been quoted $3 per kilogram to dip the Chassis.
Is this a decent price?
Around what weight is a bare Chassis anyway?

i threw all the bolts from the Deo into an icecream container...... was a major PITA when it came time to put shit back together....... next time (and there WILL be a next time) i am going to place them in seperate containers and mark them.
btw.... i had about 6 bolts left over ;D

I finally decided to have a look at this thred man you have taken on a project as with having bolts left over thats quarenteed if you threw them all in one tin and is some time before putting it back together again so i wish you lots of luck with that
but you look like your having fun doing it and so cleanly too in them pics talking about the pics keep them coming in im interested in watching this one now

30-04-2005, 02:52 PM
While it doesn't help you much now, another good thing to do is get a video camera and film the vehicle being pulled apart. Keep all the bolts separte and marked and then when it comes time to put it all together you can go back to the video reply and see how it came apart.

No real reason I have not touched the bundera just lazy I guess. Yesterday I tried to dissassemble the rear diff and drum brakes but didn't get very far. I could take the drums off but the axels would not budge. Is there any trick to these? Gregorys says you should be able to remove the sirclip and it comes out. http://www.geocities.com/vtcalais05/smallDSCF3014.JPG

Try and get the other book available cant remember who puts it out but its a pinky colour and I have found it to be alot better than the Gregorys.
Just a quick question why are you taking the axel off? Are the teeth on it really worn?. But that diff looks like its seen better days

Sorry, it's Max Ellery's book not Gregorys.
The Axels are fine I just need to replace the bearings and I'm being anal about cleaning things up :)
That one tooth on the diff seems to be the only major damage I have come across on the whole car so far.
Thats a sick shed :D I cant even get my Lux in the garage :( Looks like fun and will look awsome when done. Keep it coming

08-08-2005, 08:22 PM
AAARRRRRGGGGHHHH!!!!!!!!! >:(
How the bloody hell do you get these axels out? There is nothing I can see that is holding this thing on. The only thing I can assume is that I have to get this pushed out with a hydrolic press.
Someone, please help my fragile mind! ???
Bundy
09-08-2005, 08:08 AM
Yeah thats the case you have to get the bearings pressed on and off. I have done this on mine once already and I did it with twistys on the way down to tuff truck.

05-11-2005, 01:54 AM
Well, I thought I'd bring this thread back from the dead. I have made little progress since last time. The rear diff housing has been cleaned up and painted yet I still have to take it to a mechanic to get the bearings pressed in. I now have the front diff and am playing with that and with the first real parts purchase of the build-up. I have bought a front bearing kit of eBay from http://search.ebay.com.au/_W0QQfgtpZ1QQfrppZ25QQsassZultracheapautoQQssPageN ameZSTRKQ3aMEWNQ3aMESOI at $49 for both sides including freight, how can you go wrong.

I tell ya what, those pesky cone washers in the hubs are a right royal pain in the arse to get out.
Have I been told correctly that 60 series front calipers and vented discs will fit without any modification to the front of my Bundy?

Wow what a project....
Those cone washers can be a pain, usually a sharp hit with a hammer and drift work though not always that easy.
The yellow springs are probably TJM's unless repainted as most OME springs are black with yellow shocks.
Any rust in the chasis or was it just full o mud?
Theron
V6Bundy
06-11-2005, 12:22 AM
I couldn't find a brass drift anywhere in Townsville, and I mean ANYWHERE!. I ended up using a socket extension instead which is now useless but did get the cone washers out.
When cleaning the springs, we came across '80# front' on all of them. Obvioulsy out of an 80 series.
A little bit of pitting in the exposed front (where the bullbar bolts onto and a bit around the windows also found some rust attacking the drivers seat mounting bolts, but all-in-all not too bad.

you mean not as decimated as mine - at least you can prolly still drive yours ;)
Bundy_Harry
08-11-2005, 08:56 AM
Well actually I have 2 Bundy's, neither as decimated as yours however neither of which is going either.
The soft top is a bare body just sitting on the chassis (not bolted to) the engine gear box transfer and diffs are still in, like you when I pulled it down all the bolts screws etc were just thrown into one big container, I thought that was real bright to afterwards ::)
The hard top Bundy I bought recently is parts donor to the rag top and every nut and bolt I remove is photographed catalogued/labelled, bagged and filed in a special box just for the build up (some time in the distant future). SO at the moment it is looking a little more complete but still not a go-er.
I should really get my finger out and start a thread of my own, at the very least a little more will get done on my build up
Cheers Harry
ps V6Bundy thanx for the inspiration

As far as inspiration goes, I would love it if you could start your build-up thread so that I can feed of you aswell. Because we have not-so-common cars we don't have the exposure to other builds so it is easy to loose focus - for me anyway....

What a major job!!! Keep us posted on the progress. ;)
Also when it comes to sorting out the nuts and bolts it will be far easier to wash them all and have them clean and put like with like. This way you will see that there are four of these, six of those and ten of them etc. When it comes time to put a part on you will require X number of bolts then it is just a matter of looking for the correct bolts.
Make sure that you put all washers on the bolts before assembling it and you shouldn't have anything left over.

Ok. The time has come to paint the Chassis. The plan was to spray it with a couple of coats of fisholene then a few coats of chassis black paint.
We intend on being rather liberal with the fisholene because we don't have access to a sand blaster or anything that can help us get into the small cracks etc to clean out all the dirt and surface rust although I will give it the once over with the steel wheel first. Does anyone know of any tricks to cleaning out all the crap quickly? If not would you think this would be enough to stop the rust? Would it stick well to the small amounts of dirt that I miss?

have u used one of theose wirebush's that u can get to go in your angle grinder??? they get into the metal really well, when i resprayed my boat trailer i used one to get the old paint off and it worked a treat, if u get one get the cone style one, not the flat one, they suck.

well, thanks to some knob at a certain paint retailer here in townsville, the painting or the chassis has been delayed some.
I don't care what people say but Chassis Black paint and Fish Oil DO NOT MIX!!!
I ended up spraying the fish oil on by itself and having to leave it outside for 24 hours or more. It was still tacky when we started to run out of time on Sundy arvo. I had to make the choise whether or not to risk it or waste the next weekend off I have painting it. So, we took the chance and sprayed the paint on. I won't know if it worked out or not for a few more weeks, so fingers crossed ;)

Now what do you guys rekon? The suspension that was on this when I purchased this had Rancho 9000s and 80 series springs (not old man emu like we thought originally) I am now about to buy a bush kit and I was thinking of getting some offset bushes for the radius arms. With the expected 3 - 4 inch lift and judging from the old bushes, it certainly needs it.
Any recomendations on brands, offsets etc?

Oh my lord! May I never have to rebuild a Drum Brake in my life ever again! >:(
It has been a while since I last posted here - so long that this thread has beed forced down to page 7 :o
Anyways, The rear diif housing has been cleaned and painted, new Bearings have been pressed into the axels, some Nolathane bushes put into the control arms and all put back together again.
I have just finished sticking it all back under the chassis and bolting it back in. After all that work it seems I have only managed to put together an over-sized wheel barrow :)
Next I have to somehow get the Front diff ass. out here so that I can start the build again.
I will post some pics tomorrow.

Alot of the time they are under either RJ70 for petrol and LJ70 for the diesel model......The worst part is when you buy parts get them home and they are wrong.

Not a great deal of rust in the body. Somehow the drivers seat mount has rusted so we are going to have to weld new mounting bolts in. Typical spots like behind the rear tyres and around the windows have small amounts of rust to. Nothing too drastic - should be easy:rolleyes:

I must admit I have been very lucky with rust in my current bundy.....My last one was riddled with it:eek:

I only have rust around the bottom of the roof, the dealer done a decent job of fixing the rust inside, you could almost fit a can of Red Bull through the rust hole.

Rightio!
Body is on now which still requires some work to it as I am bringing it back to bare metal. The drivers side seat mounts were a bit average rust-wise so they were cut out and new metal welded in.

I have now taken the vehicle back home so I don't have to drive 150Km each way every time I want to do work on it; all I have to do now is go downstairs!:)
I have the weekend off so maybe i can get the front quarters taken back to metal.

hey v6 bundy what would be the best way to remove rust i was thinking of using a grinder with a wire wheel fitted.
i was wondering would that be to harsh to use.
and would that leave swirl marks in the metal im going to just bog over these area anway
any help would be greatly appreciated(spelling)

sorry also ive got an 88 lx bundy and the rear end feels really sloppy when driving over a curb i was wondering what this could be i was thinking that it might be either the berings are toast or might be the bushes are gone any help would be good i know thats sounds pretty vague but any thing u could help me with would be great

As far as the rust is concerned, it depends on where it is. If it is just surface rusting with no pitting then a wire wheel is fine. I used a drill for mine. It wasn't as abbrasive as the grinder.
The sloppyness in the rear end is more than likely the control arm bushes. When was the last time they were replaced? If they are still the same since new (which mine were) they will definately need replacing.

Well I have had a bit of fun with the Bundy since last update. I have recovered the rubber sound deadening for the firewall aswell as the floor of the cabin.

...and know I am into the engine bay. My plan is to have it started in a couple of weeks. Whilst cleaning and removing all hoses (fuel, vaccuum and water) I came across a crack in the water pump heater outlet:(

It’s looking good, I have a question though, is it living in north Qld does this to us, to want to strip a vehicle, fit a v8 and rebuild it. Well that is my excuse what is yours.

Actually, so far they have had the best etching primer that I have used. It doesn't seem to be as gluggy as others and goes on evenly and stays on too.

Time for a bit more info. I have had to make a new engine wireing loom for tacho, dizzy, fuel pump, oil and temp sensor and that sort of thing. Plugged it all in. Removed the fuel tank and sprayed above it with HEAPS of rust proof and sound deadener.Fitted it again and replaced all rubber hoses (fuel, cooling and vaccuum) Put a bit of fuel in it and tried to start it.
The fuel pump had lost presssure. It took 20 mins for the fuel to get to the filter in the engine bay. Off to Repco and bought a new one along with a new battery and tried again

We have ignition! Almost 2 and a half years later and the only maintenence the engine received in all that time was periodically squirting some oil in the spark plug holes and manually rotating the crank.

To Do Checklist:
More Rust repairs.Front bottom corner of both rear windows.
Behind rear wheel arch - both sides.
Underneath both doors where the rubber clips in.
The Sun roof requires some attention aswell.
Fit interior - dash is already installed.
Front brakes need to be installed with new rotors then braking system bleed. If I can find some at the right price, I will install 60 series calipers to allow for vented rotors.
Check rear hub seals. i think i didn't put one back in when the new bearings where pressed onto the axel.
Refirbish swivel hubs.
Replace tie rod ends.
a few little misc. items
Buy and install new shocks. Then it should be finished!

Nah, I moved down across the border. Worst thing I ever did - got the shits with that and moved back to queensland (Gold Coast) and bought an LH torana there which I started working on - got the shits with goldie and moved back here. A VERY expensive waste of time.
Anyway, back in the full swing of things. Clutch piping is hooked up now but still needs flushing and filling.
Brake lines are mostly done, just need to get some longer hoses.
Rust in the rear quarter is cut out. Not sure if I am going to repair it back to the way the body looks normally or chop it and wrap a rear bar there instead - prolly go the rear bar.
This week will be to try and get the car moving and stopping.

It should be good, I am coming down for it, booked in at the blue water caravan park. Might see you there. I am back doing some work on my Nissan as I am planning on going down in it.
How long do you think it is going to take to get your bus back on the road now you are working on it again?

At this rate it is still going to be a while. I would love to have it done before Xmas.
This weekend:
Some rust in the Passenger side window welded up.
Rear brakes plumbed.
Forgot the oil seals in the rear diff housing when I put back together last time. So I installed them. Put a new diff gasket in aswell.
Apart from diff oil, that is the last of the work needed for the rear. All bearings and what-not were replaced when I had it all apart.
Clutch piping plumbed and filled. Clutch still works! It was giving a little squeeling when cold a couple of years ago when I last drove it. The squeel has now dissapeared. Me thinks I might replace the throw out bearing anyway - later.
Started plumbing the front brakes and realised I rounded the brake nuts when removing them last time. Off to Pirtek and bought some more piping and brake nuts. But ran out of time.
Wont be able to work on this for a couple of weeks now. Stock take next week on my days off :(

Front Hard Brake lines made and installed. It was quite easy, a little fiddley trying to get the right lengths and for the flare bolts to line up but trial and error and fitting and bending and refitting and bending and refitting and bending and refitting......you get the idea.
I have installed the drivers rubber line but cannot find the passenger side mount for the rubber line.
:-( I want to take it for a drive NOW!!!

I ended up finding the mount in box labled 'Brake parts'.....Go figure. Front brakes are all in and bled and working well. Unfortunately the rears are not getting fluid. and then i found a little wet spot on the weird looking bit towards the back of the vehicle that the line on the rear diff sprouts from - maybe the proportioning thingy? I will have to rebuild/buy this item.

You might need a new kit or valve as valve as it has been sitting for some time, but they can be a pain sometimes to bleed, you can try putting the front wheels up on car ramps this can help. Also if the Bundy has any lift in the suspension and the proportional valve is linked to the rear differential it may need adjusting to allow for the extra height to give you the correct bias to the brakes.

Anyone? :-[
whiteline.com.au have adjustable panhard rods front and rear for $265 each, got mine last week :D.
also 4x4accessories.com.au have castor correction bushes, adjustable tie rods and adjustable drag links. love the bundys but prob is no one knows anything about em or has any products to suit.
lovin ya build up! its gonna be a tough truck when its together:truck:
