Hi all, i'm hoping some of you guys and gals may be able to help me out a bit.
I have a 2003 GU that is soon to recieve a Tough Dog 4" lift and a set of the new Cooper STT 305/70R16's (when they land in good ol Oz). ;D
I have the team ready to do the job, the engineer to do the checks, even the swerve test arranged (a requirement here in WA), the only thing i am lacking is the go ahead for the 4" from the better half. :-[
In a nutshell, she would like to see a 4" because she is not convinced, so if there is anyone out there that has any piccies of a GU with 4 " lift, your assitance would be appreciated in my pursuit of happiness. :D
And i thought getting it legal would be the problem !!! ;)

that is a nice bit of gear, the pic really doesn't do it justice, mine will look like this soon also.
Broady's, whats she hesitant about with the lift, the height or the $ or you can't convince her it needs doing.

Love the pic. Thanks for your reply. The missus is warming to the idea though i think it is going to cost me in that if i buy her a new car, then i can do whatever i want with this one.
Bribery is supposed to be my tool of the trade !
When the job is done i'll post the pics.

when i said beast....
it just triggered images of my car with a lift under it and some big rubber.
lifts aren't that big over here in kal... and the ones that have a few inches under always draw my attention lol. so yes i am easily impressed ;D

Hey 2 Brutal, the missus's biggest concern isn't the cost or that it needs doing , she says that she doesn't want it to stand out in a crowd and it needs to fit in shopping centre carparks. She currently has a laser so i don't see a problem, she can drive her own car. Besides, after all the trips i.ve done in it so far, the only dents in the bodywork that i have are a result from shopping centre carparks. And the look, well she'll get used to it..........i hope. :-\
For those venturing to Tassie, there is an excellent day trek outside of Hobart near New Norfolk called Jeffreys Track. (Got shown it by a local at Xmas). Some really good fun but not for stocko's. As i haven't lifted the car and was still running original tyres, i parked mine half way down the track and continued in some other fairly serious vehicles. If in that part of the woods, check it out. ;D

mate tell her you want it to draw attention but don't tell her the real reason is so all the nice girly's look your way 8) ;D.
we used to have the carpark parking problem for under cover but up here there is no under cover parks anywhere in town so it isn't an issue now for us, ::)
the best part about a lift is the vehicles when set up properly are so much more capable and easier to drive offroad, you don't need to give it as hard of a time to make it go places you normally wouldn't think about.
so it can help wear and tear as well.
Broadys GU

the trip to Tassie at Xmas i had a mate who owns a 4b shop in Bris Vegas with us. Its got a 5 inch (settled) lift, 315's Baja Claws and heaps of other fruity bits, and the the top of the mirror on my GU actually clears easily the underside of his. The missus was amazed that it made my car look like it was a rav4 when parked next to it. I'll post some pics of the 2 soon once i sort this piccie thing out.
I'm in the middle of convincing her that, it only starts out as a 4" lift but it will quickly settle back to a 3", maybe even 2 1/2.
Like i said, i thought the whole legal thing would be the hardest thing to overcome. ::)

I have a GQ with a 4" lift and it is all tough dog and it has not faulted in the three years it has been in but one thing to keep in the back of your mind is that it will 'settle' to about a 2 1/2 - 3 and then the lift doesnt look as impressive, but as i have just started to find out with this much settling it has now affected the castor angle and i am starting to have steering shimmies and dificult steering, so just be aware and make sure it is set up by someone who knows thier stuff and has good aftersales service to help combat these little bumps in the road to offroad bliss. Opposite Lock in Balcatta have been helping me from day one and these guys are great and will be getting all of my off road business now and in the future. PS my better half only has a prob with the climb in and out and once inside enjoys the ride and view

the down side in big lifts is the lack of load carrying ability, big lift coils are non progressive so don't like loads.
remember drawers, fridges, recovery gear, winch's , bullbars, dual batteries etc all add up to a lot of extra weight on the coils, it might sometimes pay to fit a longer coil than you really want to allow for compression under normal use. ;)

Hey Paddy, i am planning to job with the boys at OL Balcattas. The info they have provided me with so far has been enormous and i am looking forward to doing the mods with them.
I my search for a suitable product and service, everyone has something to sell and they will sell you a kit immediately over the counter for their so-called Best System for you. The boys at OL have told me that they will install the baics, set it up, and then determine the best and appropriate items to fit so they can get the castor angles and the like spot on.
I know what i want and what i will need for the job, but as the old age advice goes, i will let the experts do the job. High, legal and insurable.

The boys will help for sure. i'm looking into a 5"lift soon and they have already explained what they are going to do, why they are doing it that way and that they will set it properly for me so i dont have any trouble. i live about 1800km north of perth so these guys know it has to be done right the first time cause i am too far away to come back for teething problems. i cant explain how happy i've been with the work they have already done but i do know that i have 100% confidence that if i drive in i will drive out without failure. any way post some pics of the big rig when the job is done, it is always good to see some more west aussies getting into the 4wd mod scene

When I went to Tassie in my Rodeo I took a dirt road that on the map went to New Norfolk from down near the Air Walk. It started off as a good dirt road but got rougher and narrower as we progressed. It eventually got so rough and closed in that I turned around (was getting dark and my Wife was very concerned as we had been hung up twice). When we got home to Brisbane I got another map and it showed the same track as a dead end #$^#%$&&$%^^%.
Looked like some awesome 4wding if you were in a group and with someone who knew the area though.

Hey there Utemad, the track we ventured down in Tassie is just south of New Norfolk. Heading south you go up the 'White Timber Line' (i think that was the name) passing a pretty trick play area before getting to Jeffreys Track which peels off left. 1/2 Way down the track was best i could go in the stocko, but the others got htrough, and back, to pick my ride up again. The rigs below managed but are pretty well fruited up, and believe it or not we even winched the shorty which got hung up. Tackle it all the way if you dare as we had a GQ LWB and a 3000 k old GU IIII that did it one way only and got a bit of panel and plastic damage. Enjoy the pics.

I copped a ribbing and a half. i even had a 2 year girl that was running around calling me STOCKO and her older sister was having a ball with it as well. When we did Jeffreys Track the lead and trailing cars would come down to the rough sections to see how it handled it (or if would make it through). But drive it right and pick the right lines and it makes it half way down the track (minus a few bits that are still there somewhere). Unfortunately there was one section that was 45 degrees up at a 45 climb to the left that had the front right soaring to the sky, and no one got it on film. Wasn't going around for another go as it actually passes between the cutout section of a fallen tree (probably 6' round) and the side missed it by mm's. Got to go back.
PS: New suspension is on its way from Qld. I am fitting the new EFS Extreme kit (Plan B). Also arriving is a new T-Max 9500 with remote. Should be here next week, so will start posting pics when it all arrives.

Well, the gear arrived and its in. Been really busy getting ready for the move back east next week, but not until i got the rig ready for the trip. The kit is the EFS Elite at 4 inch, but i am waiting on the adjustable panhard rods to have it completely finished.
I have also fitted the T-Max EW-9500 electric winch with remote. The whole setup is nicely done and only tested so far in the driveway. Doing a 45 day trip (Perth to East Coast) and spending half that time off road and will probably need it in some of the areas we are going. (Will post in trips in December when we get there).
Also been building a fold up cargo barrier. It is powdercoated in satin black, has grey anti-shatter perspex sheeting, and stainless fittings. Now in and works a treat. I will be putting in a fridge slide in a week or two so i can secure either up or down without hassles from the fridge.

Thanks for the replies guys. Been a long time trying to sort out. For our trip east we are going from perth down around the Margaret River / Pemberton area for about 10 days then doing the coast / bays etc around Denmark on our way to Albany. NP and coast to Esperence, then out to Israelite Bay and jumping onto the Nullabor for our run to Adelaide and then Broken Hill. Up to White Cliffs, Bourke, and then running down to Sydney and ACT. Taking about 40 days to head east so we are not in a rush.
We will be on sand, corrugations, dirt, some rough stuff, basically a mix of terrains, so i'll post when we get east to let you all know how the EFS performs. Did a little test about 1 hour after we got it all in and road tested it and it quite comfortable and stable. Thinking of getting some quick disconnects so i can have some good fun when i get east.
Also picking up my new Camprite Camper in a few weeks which is almosdt finished, so keep an eye ouit for pics early december.........

Its a home made drawer sytem that i made out of hardwood, MDF, auto carpet, and cost me about 250 for the whole thing. Not as strong as a steel unit but i don't stand it and only spent 10% of the $$$$$$$$$.

I have castor plates at 5.5 degrees. They are not in the photo as they needed holes drilled in a new position. They came in the wrong spot, don't know why as they are the right part number, but they are now in a work a treat. steering was a little lighter without them and nice to drive, but now its back to normal.

5 degree castor plates always require the diff mounting brackets to be drilled, the only castor plates that don't are 7 degree plates as they line up with the original holes but are generally too much castor the other way.
I know a few people using 7's on a 4'' lift and they say they still work ok, difference is about 2 hours fitting time, but others have said it has gone to far in positive castor and it still causes wobble. ;)

You are not goin to believe it...... went out on the weekend for some playtime and we came home with 2 flooded rodeos and a very sick transfer case. When i am in 4H i have a loud and very concerning rattle / crunching noise coming from the transfer case. Its in to Nissan tomorrow as its still under NCW. I'll post the results when i get them.

Well is all fixed. Had a front right collapsed auto locking hub, misaligned front prop shaft (from factory like that), plus a few other bits and pieces. ??? I don't think they told me the whole story or list of things, but its all a goer now, with 2 brand new front hubs fitted and a pretty comprehensive inspect and servicing of the removed parts. Cost to me including 8 day courtesy car = $0.00. All under NCW. ;D
They didn't hound me about the suspension, though they did ask lots of questions. Saving grace was that i had the 40k service done less than 2500 km's earlier. The nissan engineer was at the dealer to inspect the transfer case and front diff when they had it apart, so if there were going to be problems, he would have been the one to point it out.
Again, i got excellent service from TOTAL NISSAN, Cannington, WA. :D

Cargo barrier set up for the pooch who can get some air around the sides if he's back there, the surfboard fits under the bottom while still holding back the rest, and for bigger stuff, folds up. There are 3 eye bolts on the sides for extra tie-downs.
And the rig is almost completely done .......................... oh, did someone say diff locks, d-tronic, and invertor?
G'day Broady, nice truck. Was wondering how and where you ran the wiring for the top lights??

I run 2 Pirahna looms (1 per pair) with the wiring going up behind the pilar trim behind the drivers seat. Just before it passes out over the top of the rear door there is a quick disconnect if needed. It originally had a small amount of water coming in where i notched out the rubber, but i glued some AirCon padding around the cable and now nothing gets in, even tried with the Karcher.
Running 2 looms keeps the wire gauge down and you can get them ready to go off the shelf.
