G'day,

I was lucky enough to have a day off today and had planned a run with a mate in his new 1997 GXL 80. He had to pull out so a another mate was keen to take his GQ for a run.

Our first challenge was a local 4WD challenge affectionately known as 'Gorilla Snot Hill' this particular hill is impassable after heavy rain however our bought of nice weather has dried the track out nicely. It still took two cracks at it ;) , the second by changing line proved to be the best option.

http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a91/squidbert/DSCN4943.jpg

The fantastic weather wasn't enough to dry out this patch of mud though!

http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a91/squidbert/DSCN4947.jpg

A quick recovery by the Nissan revealed the problem..........

http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a91/squidbert/DSCN4951.jpg

http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a91/squidbert/DSCN4953.jpg

Show us ya diff impression!

I did get some dignity back later in the day when the GQ got hooked up on some ruts and needed a helpful tug to get going. (believe it or not I had forgotten to put the memory card back in my camera and will rely on 'Old Mates' lovely Wife for some pictures :D )

I did get this shot back at home, three colours of mud in one day!

I guess it goes to show you don't need to travel far to have some fun.

Cheers,

Matt.

Yep - Gorilla snot hill was impassable the other day. Absolutely no traction. Amazing that in just a few days how it drys out! That bog-hole looked OK too.

Looks like you had an awsome day!
My partner and i live in Arthurton, about 170km away from Adelaide in the yorke peninsula. Weve had a little look around the Adelaide hills but found nothing that looked as exciting as 'gorilla snot hill'.
If you get a spare day off work sometime wede love to join you for a day out and have a look at these tracks.

yeh i'm heaps keen to see some tracks in the hills. i've heard there's lots around crafers n stuff.

i'll keep an eye on this post, maybe next time someone hits the hills tracks they can post it up and have a bit of a tag along.

Everywhere we went yesterday are public roads and can be found in a UBD. "Summer Track Only" tends to give them away! As for being shot at for driving on a public road...... I think that story is a local legend! I would suggest that having a group of 15 - 20 trucks roaring through would upset the locals, however we got nothing but friendly waves yesterday.

If you have a spare day go and explore and take in some of the local produce from the many small towns right through from Mt Torrens - Echunga (there are quite a few wineries and a couple of Brewery's hidden in the back blocks too)

Cheers,

Matt.

looks like the coopers are getting a bit tired there Matt!!

Yep didn't you know Coopers released a racing slick! I just commented on another thread that they were put on the truck back in 2002 at 195k, the truck has done 320k and the tyres are still serviceable (just), but struggle in the mud.

I reckon a set of BFG Muddies are the go, I'll just wait until there is a special on.

just makes me think why some of the local farmers out that way have taken the law into there hands and shot at some viehcles !!!

ah the 'public' roads debate. They are 'public' roads you know. The farmers don't own them (well they sort of do as do you and I). If they want exclusive access to their properties, they can lobby the the local council to grade, seal and bitumise the 'public' roads if that's what they want to discourage people driving on a 'public' road in a suitable vehicle.

It is against the law to discharge a firearm in a 'public' place...... the last time I enforced the law it was not an offence to drive on a public road?

Step down from your high horse and enjoy this site for what it is. When people start venturing onto the road verges off the 'public' road system then you can climb right back on your high horse and stamp your feet and pound your chest.

So far I have not seen anybody venture off 'Gorilla Snot Hill' into the road verge to travel north to south or south to north. As tax payers we are entitled to drive on any public road we like. 'Dry Weather Only' signs are cautionary, a bit like a 60km/h sign on a corner in a 110 km/h zone. If your vehicle and your driving skill is capable of negotiating the corner at 110 k/h there is no law broken.

If the local council don't wish to maintain a 'public' road boo hoo. (all the more fun for us)

Matt.

p.s. I too would love a dedicated 4WD area and access to our water catchment area's for fishing and beach access and no tax and free beer................ nice dreams!

I went and played in the old reynella quarry again on sat
Had the place to myself was great,oh the memories.
But i guess if you want to get some real 4x4ing in,move the hell away from this hole.

Seems like a lifetime and a marriage or two ago, but I used to walk, cycle and drive that hill regularly when I lived in Littlehampton. It certainly is a very slippery track even on foot!

Knowing some of the "locals" living at the base and the top, I doubt that the gunshot legend is true...but then again! There is a firing range of sorts at the top and around the bend so maybe thats where the idea comes from...

I will get my fill of 4wding on Friday (and get paid for it driving a company vehicle :thumb: ) I have my 4wd course on Friday.

That track where you so kindly pulled me from the water will be nasty after this rain. Some of the ruts are very deep now!
