left for sheringa at 11pm, was getting close, after seeing 5 roos, when i was sitting on 100kph.... SSSSHHHHHHHHHHHIIIIIIIITTTTTTTTTT...brake...breake again....BRAKKKKKKKKKKKEEEEEEEEE.... BRAKE HARDER STILL.... i stopped 8ft short of a solid wombat...who wouldnt move...
got to the spot at 3am,had a kip until 6am, then fished until 11:00... some bloke came from nowhere...older guy, who by the look of him has seen better days...
he was well and trulely half cut, slurring words, and had a job to walk straight...
chatted for half an hr, then i said im off to elliston 50kms away to weigh my salmon...
cya mate...
he drove away in his 4wd ute...
i packed up, started to leave...and here he comes down the dirt road...
his 4wd well and truley bogged ( on the same dune i got stuck on...cept he was at the top. the clown forgot to put it in 4wd, made it to the top, then sank.
tried to pull him out,, but he was sitting on the chassis...
we dug and dug and dug... to no avail...snapped my 25mm rope, then he decided to jack it up...
the delema...
he didnt have a jack, but DID have the jack handle...
which was lucky, because i had the jack, but DIDNT have the bloody handle... http://www.australiancorvettes.com/phpBB/images/smiles/banghead.gif
his handle was the wrong kind, and he ended up breaking it, but he got the job done...
finally got him pulled out with the terrano..
he gave me a couple of cans of beer, i took them, as he had had enough already, i dont drink ... at least the 2hrs of digging sobered him up a bit.

weighed fish, them went back to same spot for more fish to weigh tomorrow... nothing huge came along... but i got 17 salmon, kept 8 and released the rest...
all around the 1 -1.6kg mark.
it got dark, so i packed up, sat in the car.... and put a dvd on...
8 oclock..."stuff this....too bloody cold.
TROUBLE WAS ALL THE PETROL STATIONS CLOSE AT 7:30
screw it... decided to drive 140kms to pt lincoln, to fill up... then drive home to whyalla.
got to the highway, and the petrol station was closed at sheringa, but a heap of people drinking out the front of the servo, pulled up, and he sold me some fuel.my first experience with fast flow diesel pumps.. damn it filled the tank in less than a minute.. and took 55 ltrs.
.. then drove home... got home at 00:15, hot shower and struggling to keep my eyes open.
ive spent 8hrs driving today, done almost 800 kms, and fished for 10 hrs as well... good news is the 4 grand terrano went like a charm...cd player cranked and loaded to the hilt with fishing gear.
man am i tired....

Come on nifty how big was that fish?This...................................big or this...big.:p:D nothing big this time.... i WAS leading the comp, with a 3.9kg salmon (gutted), caught on the first day of comp.
but that got beat with a 4.2kg (gutted) fish.
for some reson they wont tell anyone the top 3 fish, for fear that nobody will come try for a bigger one.... i dont think that would be the case...
its an expense for anyone to travel over for a fish and they will come wether or not they will catch a biggun...
just this trip for a day cost me around 130 bucks, for fuel, and bait....thrown in a bit of food, and its easily a 150-200 trip... so it takes a commitment to do,and knowing the biggest fish was a good size, wouldnt deter me or others...after all... there are also BIGGER fish in out there...havnt got my name on them though.

Ahh that brings back memories. My first trip there was in 1985 - no servo there then it was a bit of a middle of no where place.

As kids we would shoot a roo on the way there and use it as bait. if we didnt catch fish we didnt eat

and i dont eat them either... just about everything i catch goes back in the water as either bait, or free to swim again...
not a real big fan of seafood, but wil eat snapper every now and again on the bbq...
i usually take one in to work a half dozen times a year, cook it on the bbq, and everyone digs in...
i can only manage a couple of sandwiches, then ive had enough...

snapper LOVE salmon... nice an oily with heaps of blood....
this is an old pic, but a typical whyalla snapper... watch EVERYONE get envious now.....
http://i68.photobucket.com/albums/i7/nifty_2006/nevssnapper.jpg
and a couple more i caught from the rocks.... i dont fish the boat much these days...its dads boat, but when he died, its just not the same going out in the boat without him..so i just fish the rocks around whyalla now..
landed 61 legal snapper last year... kept about 8 i reckon, mum loves them, and so the the workmates.

Worth it? You bet. My son absolutely loved the trip and the beauty and isolation of the Bight. We all had a ball. Would I go again? One day for sure. Blokes from here go there every summer to catch a 'big one'. One bloke "fergy" regularly catches 30kg + mullies his best so far is 45kg gutted!

Another good spot there was "the ledge" from memory it was a couple of hundred metres North of "the tub" and you had to know it was there as you couldnt see it until you were standing at the edge of the cliff. It was a short jump down onto a large ledge making a great fishing platform above the waves straight into deep water.

Between Talia and Venus bay was Dolphins beach which used to be accessed off of the old venus bay road and through farmers padocks.
This was the most reliable place i ever fished for small/medium salmon and mullet.
It now has a road going straight to it and is sighnposted Mt Camel beach although Mt camel beach is actually another smaller beach at the base of a cliff a bit north of there

seems i might have to go over for another look ....talia is sonunding pretty nice... exactely HOW do you get there from sheinga? keep heading to pt lincoln?
love my fishing.... and when the snapper are in close to the rocks, im generally out there...
one time i went when it blowing a gale wind.... for this spot, THE ROUGHER THE BETTER....
snapper come in close when its nice and dirty water...
i cast in, bait didnt even hit the bottom....SLAM.... fish of 74cm...
cast in again......WHAM.... another fish of 84cm...
i was there and in the water for less than 5 mins....
and i now had my 2 legal large snapper ( over 60cm)
so i packed up, and went home...

http://i147.photobucket.com/albums/r308/wudinna/IMG_0001-4.jpgthats a nice snapper.....the opening pic of mine is 13.2kg(29 1/2lb)
but thats a whyalla snapper.... nice fish, but not really a standout fish by our standards, where fish around the 14-16 kg are caught at times...

Yea I could see some of your snapper were pretty darn good not withstanding shore caugt. i had a crack around pt lowly once and got a few gars and salmon trout from memory - nothing outstanding.

To get to talia from Sheringa you go past locks wells - elliston and theres a sighn between elliston and the venus bay TO

- as long as nothings changed as it has been a while for me. Growing up in Wudinna that area was "the local beach"

which route are you taking? direct to sheringa from lock? or going to elliston first?
i went to elliston , then turned left to go to sheringa... bitumen all the way, cept for turnoff to sheringa beach...
mate reckons turn right at elliston, and head towards ceduna....
must get a map.

your mates right - its off of the ALT highway 1 - turnoffs 2/3 of the way to venus bay from elliston. After the turn off to talia if you keep going towards venus another 20k approx is the turnoff to Mt camel beach
- its all sighnposted unlike 20 odd years ago

as another indication of the fishing on the EP I was catching leatherjackets like this one after the other near streaky bay. While it has no scale -to give you some idea this guy was caught on a gang of 4.0 hooks and a whole pillie. To prove the run was no fluke i went back the next year and they were biting like i never left.
I have lived in WA for over 10 years and have fished a fair bit of it including a couple of hundredks east of esperance and I have yet to find spots over here that come close to the fishing of the EP

nice leather jacket...
my mate says the same thing about fishing in west oz.... he lives in cooloongup, near rockingham... and really misses his south oz fishing trips.... something we take for granted, which he can no longer do... sure he can catch fish, but he goes out on a charter boat to get them.
south oz is one of the few places where you can still pull up to a beach or rocks, wet a line, and be in with a chance of catching a nice fish.

Love hooking up those black backs on light gear :) First time my son (then 12) hooked one on Kingston jetty it took him by surprise he nearly got pulled in the water lol. Nice specimen in your pic nev thats a good 50cm. I got a whiting that size off Kingston once too I didn't realise they could fight so bloody hard.
