View Full Version : (SA) Adelaide Hills Winter day trip.

Some times you just need to splash some mud on you truck or explore your own back yard.

A window of opportunity opened last Sunday and a small group of us headed into the Adelaide Hills to explore some 'Summer Tracks'.

I saw a rather large 'puddle' on my way to meet the rest of the crew and decided to resist the urge to drive through it (even though my 10 year old son was urging me on!)

It was lucky I erred on the side of caution as my 'careful' approach and entry saw the 80 stuck in some serious ruts (my likely the legacy of a few sets of 35's)

http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a91/squidbert/Sunday21June002.jpg

Oh well, time to practice some recovery skills and drag the old girl to dry land.

http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a91/squidbert/Sunday21June003.jpg

Our next challenge saw a 'diff locked' Rodeo put 4 Landcruisers to shame!

http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a91/squidbert/Sunday21June007.jpg

If you look closely you will notice fellow forum member 'ClintN' standing high on the hill sharing words of encouragement. A chat with a local property owner and some friendly advice that he had never seen a vehicle negotiate the climb in winter without the aid of diff locks, was a challenge I was prepared to accept!

The first run saw the 80 make it half way.

http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a91/squidbert/Sunday21June011.jpg

A change of tact and a different line saw a further climb.

http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a91/squidbert/Sunday21June010.jpg

The slippery rock face made the final hurdle un-attainable but great fun all the same. The local cocky commented that it was the most determined effort he had ever seen in those conditions!

With my tail between my legs we wandered through some very picturesque Adelaide Hills country side.

http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a91/squidbert/Sunday21June030.jpg

I just hope some of the rain made it to the Murray River catchment area.

All in all we had a great afternoon out, and achieved our goal of getting dirty.

Very cool.

I don't suppose you could PM me the names of the first few?

I had a go at trying to get up this in a basically stock r9, very slippery at the top. Last 10 - 15 metres you really need the grip.

As a consolation a hilux that flew up after I decided to turn around and take off didn't make it up in his first couple of goes either - not sure if he got it in the end :)

Edit:

here's an "up shot"

I am reluctant to post again, and share an attainable experience on public roads where no road rules were broken, nothing illegal was done and no-one was injured. There were some pretty simple ground rules in this section about getting threads off track.

"#2. No insults, personal attacks, or any crap. THERE WILL BE A ZERO TOLERANCE POLICY HERE, MORE THAN ANYWHERE! Discuss it via PM if you have something to say or just leave it altogether."

Without being smart, the latest 2009 UBD has all the roads we drove on, you just have to do some homework. (they even have 'dry weather only' printed on the maps) Half the fun is exploring, some people call it getting lost!

As for having a public road closed because some-one drove in a puddle............. I shake's me head.

Please enjoy the pics and story for what it was, a Sunday drive.

End of story.

Yeah I need to work on the skill haha - first 4by, and no offroad experience on 4 wheels, only motorbikes.

Have MAXXIS 751 A/Ts.

I may have another shot at it this weekend, not sure. I have some searching to do via google maps.

Thanks for the tip RE the UBD, didn't know they displayed that info mate, I have been relying on google maps which is a bit touch and go.

Edit: Tyres chocked with mud, also I hear a little handbrake is the go to kick the LSD in? Or is that only RA rodeos?

'That Hill' is a real surprise packet, an absolute bugga when wet, but give it a day and you can cruise up no worries. I have seen it when the water is running through the ruts.

All the vehicles made it back up last Sunday (my 7 year old spat it half way up cause I had promised her at the bottom I wouldn't do it) I had a half arsed attempt and unfortunately chose the wrong gear. You have to get it right or you won't make it this time of the year.

A mate of mine damaged his Disco last year when his 'electric stuff' over rode his driving and threw him into the embankment.

Hmmm 751's. Had them on my Rodeo for a long time. I got bogged on my sisters wet side lawn one day with them! Mind you I had the trailer on with a ton of firewood in it and the Rodeo. (unhitched it and it walked out easy) Good wearing tyres but useless in mud lol.
Let them down to 10-12psi and it should walk up that hill.

Does anyone let their tyres down anymore? or is it more of a "challenge" to attempt difficult terrain on public tracks with full pressures and rip them up.
Not having a go at you team.

No offence - I had them @ 20PSI. I think next shot is going to be 16 PSI.

I've read they're shockas in mud also, but the bus came with so much tread I'm not real keen on springing for a new set or wheels + tyres just yet. Am keeping an eye out for some sunnies on the cheap though.

We've had a bit of a damp couple weeks, I'll have a crack at it again this weekend or next weekend probably...

I wasn't real prepared that shot, I just wanted to have a squizz and see what it was looking like.

Went out the day after with a few blokes around the area and had another shot at it then.

Good job getting her up there!

2.8TD, I was keen on the diesel over the petrol pretty much for litres / 100ks and I love the rumble!

The bloke that owned it put some 15" PCW alloys on it, not sure of the sizing available for them, but I think I'll just leave the 751s on them, and when I get around to it (and $$ permitting) get a set of sunnies and whatever the biggest size I can fit under the rodeo (I think 31s?)

gday folks

As discussed in this thread, one of the images did show a vehicle deviating from the obvious track for the sole purpose of driving through a water hole.

Whilst we've all done it, its not advisable to post photos of your vehicle doing it, especially with rego plates being readable in other photos, so i removed the photo and all associated comments.

It seems heavy handed and unneccesary, but the anti 4wd brigade love photos like that to use against us.....its a fact of life unfortunately.

Thats what I had on my R9 for a while - 33 x 10.5 x 15

None of these tracks are that hard to find - although I haven't seen that steep hill climb. What I do is go for a drive on the weekends and look for dirt roads, often some have 'no thru road' signs but turn into dry weather only tracks. Just go for an explorer through the hills and try and stick to dirt roads, you be amazed at what you find and the hidden country side that you've probably never seen before!
Finding these tracks is half the fun! :) Leave the UBD in the glovebox...

Cheers,

p.s. don't be fooled by the 'no thru road' signs ;)

Yep not wrong. Looks like they're doing some work to it, they've got some drainage at the bottom mud puddle now, it's practically empty.

Some tractor tracks up top and a little bit of grading has been done.

Hopefully they don't fill it with crush next and make it passable!

been out to Port Gawler was fun fow the few short hours we were there found a nice track that followed the fence line for & good 6-7ks with lots of sand humps & a few small creek crossings.
Also found some tracks in the Mt Crawford area that weren't too bad mainly 2wd with a few Hi range hill climbs
