Other than putting V8 in, can I get any more power out of the 4.5 engine

A set of Quality extractors, high flow exhaust, snorkel, K&N filter and a safari uni-chip will certainly improve your performance and slightly improve your economy as it did with mine

Hi.
Apart from extractors, and the tuning chip, Have a look on the Lcool website they have a shortcut to advancing the timing slightly on the 4.5 petrol motor.( supposed to increase horses slightly with better economy)
Other Mods you could try are an electric water pump, and thermatic fans, I believe that a fair few horses are lost through driving the cooling fan and water pump.

I do not know if anyone on the forum has done these mods , maybe a mechanic on the forum could help with some advice.
Food for thought anyway.
Tall paul.

If you got the money bolt a turbo on. Theres a couple of people that do them, the best one I saw had everything you need with the program for $4,500. That wasnt fitted, but it would be easy enough to do yourself, just get it dynoed and tuned with your program and will be sweet. Be a bit more interesting than the LS1 conversions.

Advance the timing, decent air filter, and decent exhaust.

they run a very low 2deg std timing, can run a fair bit higher...

I ran mine at 10 deg but have always ran it on premo since i have had it.. and its still one of the best 4.5's ive driven...

Sorry to hi-jack the OPs thread, I've read about a few people advancing the timing on the 4.5, any idea how much advance you can run on 91 RON? Also when running premium at 10 degrees does the mileage improve enough to cover the extra expense?

Check out the sprintex website. $4k for a supercharger for the 4.5. Puts peak torque from around 1500 rpm or so. High 400s nm wise from memory.

I advanced mine to 6 or7 degrees and run 91 ron. I definately noticed better acceleration and no pinging. Takes 5 minutes.

I turbo'd my 80 for about 3k did all the work myself. 5psi boost, no re-tune required. power up to 150rwkw torque up to 440nm.
stil get 440km to a tank doing highway driving with 5hrs 4x4 in the middle.

About to fit injected gas to it, so economy should be pretty decent and power up a tad too.

Intercooling would cost another 500 or so with custom fab piping and bump power more again

I just had RDP motorsport fit a snorkel, k&n filter and they put some timing in to it on the dyno, starts better, idles smoother, better acceleration and from what I can tell on the few kms I have done so far, better economy as well.

On a side note, I had the part time conversion fitted as well. Drives like a new car. so impressed with the handling improvement. especialy now there is no more dif slap and backlash when changing gears. Very happy.

Quick question, how do you advance the timing on the 1fz-fe?

would definitely get turbo before supercharger. around $3000 with all parts inc exhaust from 4wdsystems.com had a mate fit extracters and 3 inch exhaust and reckons huge difference. just remember u dont need extracters when u fit turbo so dont pay twice!

As Matt said, the better the engine breathes, the better the power and economy you get. Strange to get both but true. :D

A Gregory's or Max Ellery's Manual ( I prefer the latter) will help heaps on this as well.

The cheapest option would be to go to a different used car place each friday, test drive the diesel model, then jump back in yours.......she'll feel real quick and you'll be smiling for another week :thumb:
