If they are anything like the old SU oil damped carbies ( triple SU's on a 192 HD ute ) then weight of oil is bloody important .

Too heavy and they don't shut down qwik enough - Not nice when your throttle sticks / overruns
And too light weight of oil and carbies will actually "flutter" at high revs.

Hated the things ...... replaced them with 3x 45DCOE Webers.....now that was fun !!!:waycool:

Cheers

hey chris, thanks for that mate. i was thinkin the viscosity of the oil would make a difference.
will using the wrong type hurt them in anyway????
there a mock SU
there a strongburg make. only 2 of them.
i'd love to stick webbers on em, but tehn main problem is
money
money
dont think they'll like hills i climb
and..
oh yeah money:cry:

mrbenwithag,

Viscosity / Weight of Oil, sorry should have been more specific

Yep, too thick = slow response / too thin = flutter

Check out a manual, or someone on this forum should be able to advise you for you make /model/ carby

Motor Oil will damp them, but the correct type is much better, Strombergs were often used on early motor bikes so try them for info.

And your right , Webers dont like being tilted up Hill & down Dale.

yep they used to. can't remember if it was engine oil
or auto trans oil. i think 20w/50. it was back in 1988!!!

Is this for all carbies or just certain types?

I used power steering fluid in my old su on the datto.....then went to 45mm webers! what a sound!

Webers would be more economical I reckon, ONCE you get them sorted, and they are an artform to get right, particularly in triples. Dellortos I havent fiddled with.
Induction noise from a set of triple Webers is like nothing else you ever heard

I believe this is a Japanese design and many jap cars still used it ..

Like most things, the japs copied them from someone else. SU I believe stands for Skinners Union which would have been from the UK judging by the number of british cars which used SU carbies.

yeah i got told to use trans oil on em.
mine defo need oil in em coz i remember readin it in the manual.
midian, you hit the nail on the head, the intial cost price is the issue.
my old man is a carbie/webber/holy nut. so i've got plenty of help there if i ever go that way.
ive herd trans oil heaps so i might try that.
cheers for all the help fellas:thumb:
