What a magic weekend travelling down the southern end of the Border Tk, All up it was over 1300km in 3 days. I had 3 in the GU for the weekend so it was loaded right up. Fuel economy on the hwy run into a head wind for most of the way was 14lts per 100km which was great considering I had 3 swags and a space case full of wood on the roof rack.
After the 8 or so hour drive we arrived at Pinnaroo and were we pickied up our parks permit before heading back over the border to the start of the Border Tk. We headed to Pine Hut soak which was our 1st camp site for the weekend
A drizzling persistant rain for the evening buy the fire saw us hit the swags for the night. The awning was a great addition to the GU before leaving giving a us some shelter for cooking under ect. We rose early having breakfast before packing up and heading for the sand with Old courier and Dave joining us before we left.
There were some great dunes on the way down to Red Bluff where we would be camping for the 2nd night. We arrived just in time as there was a steady stream of 4wd's for the next hour or so after we set up.
The sand was soft in parts but seemed to firm up with every attempt at getting over the dunes, there was a few different options if there was trouble in getting over!!
We rose early the morning we camped at Red Bluff with Tim B, Shonky and myself heading up Red bluff for the sunrise which was a treat thats for sure!
Once we left camp we made our way to the biggest challenge of the trip ( big dune) as you can see in the pics below the GU had a some trouble on the 1st attmpt as the sand was very soft even hard to walk up.
Once we left the sand we made our way along to the muddy section of the Border Tk, this section sure tests the articulation of the 4wds as they taclke the ruts. We avoided one boghole/stinking stench as this was a nasty looking challenge that would need some some seriuos clening afterwards. There a by pass track track for this section. The last section was a narrow sandy road that rejoined a road that headed to Bordertown or Nhill. We all aired up and said our goodbyes to fellow SA forum members before heading to Nhill for lunch then the drive home!!
This trip has been in the pipline for about 5-6 months and was an awesome trip that we will be keen to travel over and do again!! Also to explore more of this area will be on the cards....
Cheers rich

hey guys glad u had a great trip in my home back yard I grew up in Kaniva and had the big desert and little desert rite on my doorstep with the southeast of SA just over the border there is plenty to see when you start looking. looking at the pick its way to dry for this time of year but 15 years of below average rain will do that i guess normally the ruts in the bog holes would be under water and the sand hard packed hope to see more picks from other trips
happy camping

happy campingDid you know Matt "Hazza" from just out of Kaniva. Used to drive a black Ford ute. The first time I went up the track (Btown >Red Bluff) was with him nearly 10 years ago in our workmates Patrol. That was when there was twice as many bogholes and bigger too. The next year we went up again after the huge rains and could barely get through a couple of sections as there were no chicken tracks then.

Gday Sudso, I ran into Shaun Whale from the mag when on one of our high country trips. They were putting together the "Adventure Way" article. I had a good chat about a lot of things including ideas for trips that I was planning. When he returned to Sydney I recieved a PM from him and I also got in touch with Brendan Seymour about my ideas and what I wanted to do. They were very pleased with what I had in mind and it just went from there.
I had planned getting in touch with the mag about the same time I saw Shaun so it all tied in nicely!!
Sudso a big thanks to you too mate for the advice and info you gave us before we ventured into your backyard!! It was much appreciated!! :thumb::thumb::thumb:

After the huge deluge we had yesterday it will be very wet and muddy up there again. The creek through town here was flowing for the first time in years and most of that water runs into it from you know where :D
Hope all the crops will be ok though. Not what we really want in the middle of harvest season.
utedriver you and your crew keep up the good work :thumb:
We all wish we could trek around as much as you guys.
