Hi I have a FJ73 cruiser with a 3F 4 litre petrol motor witch was rebuilt about 5 years ago but has only got about 60,000 on it I am hoping to run at tuff truck next year so I wanting to get rid of the problems that carbie have on hills so im thing of putting it on gas. As im getting only just over 300 km's to the tank about 70 litres with my 35's it's rather thirsty also I don't have the money for an engine swap so this the alterative. So im interested in anyone running gas on a carbie motor is the gas reliable and worth the cost and I have heard that when there dual fuel they can not be tuned well for both its one or the other or in the middle. So should I just get a dedicated gas system so its tuned right to get the most out the motor. Im not worried about gas alibility as its not a touring truck.

you are right about dual fuel, .....tuning for dual fuel is a compromise on both fuels
LPG needs more advance to run its best but it will ping on petrol at that timing, hence a mid point is achived
straight LPG can be set to have same or more power than petrol when set right
..Run an electonic ignition...good quality 9mm+ leads...get the distributor regraphed for lpg ($100)
..you need to remve the carby and replace with a throttle body.( cant remember the one to use ) the one off the early 80 series 3fe will work with an impco gas carby & convertor.
You can also use a 350 holley base to adapt other gas carbies or even use a petrol carby and gut the middle out so only the bottom butterfly is left!!!
throw the car on a dyno and get the timing set..it will need a lot of advance

how are the 3f valves in the head for heat - if they are like the 2f they will burn out on straight gas - as i found out the hard way

a mate of mine ran straight gas on his 2f and it was brilliant. this was in a 40 series with 33's mind you, but his fuel economy was 15L/ 100k's.
if your not going to run petrol, do away with the carbie all together. what he did was make up an adaptor to bolt a 6 cylinder falcon throttle body onto the standard manifold, then run a dedicated gas converter/mixer (like impco 200/225, gas research etc). much better than dealing with the obstructions of the original carbie, the poor tuneability of a simple gas ring setup etc.
in a non touring rig, LPG is the way to go. my 40 has run lpg since the day i got it, and in all honesty, i've had more issues with running petrol.

what he said ^^^ cause he is talking about my old 40
still have the adapter aswell if you where interested bolts a ed falcon throttle body onto the standard intake and a impco 200 goes straight ontop of that

you wont regret straight lpg...like i said before and BR and pcman said too.....
use a throttle body, dump the carby the impco 225 is ample for that motor..
get the timing dialed up correctly on a dyno ..give it a heap of spark..ducks guts
if its got lpg on it already you should be able to pick up the 225 and L series mixer for about $150 the copper feed and the solonoids ect are all ok.....it wont take much to adapt from a standard pressure system
if not already on lpg you should be able to pick up second hand bits for about $500 give or take.... look at a vn ect lpg as heaps of those on lpg had the impco system!!..throw on some rego and go the rebate!!
