hey guys.

ever since ive had my hilux, bout a year and a bit now, its had a knocking sound coming from the engine. i didnt make much of it at first. but now that i scored myself a job and earning an income, i thought its about time that i give my truck a little attention.

so anyway, ive narrowed it down.

thrs is a knocking sound coming from the bottom half of the engine, you can hear it wenever the engine is running.
the engine was fully rebuilt just before i bought it.
so ive been told that it could b a big end bearing.

any idea what it could be?
and if it is a big end bearing, would it just be loose or what?
i dont want 2 crack it open on weekend, just incase i screw things up, then i wont hav a car 4 work on monday. unless its a small job.

im planning on having a good look wen i get a couple of days off at easter.

cheers, Pat.

what engine is it? my gf had a 2wd hilux with a 22r in it that had a knock in engine with slowly got worse and sounded worse under accleration. pulled the sump off and No#1 bigend and shit itself installed a full set of big ends and was all good after that. make sure if you find that is the problem inspect the crank for damage.

G'day Pat,

If it's a big end, it ain't really a weekend fix. :(

Sorry to break it to ya man, but a big end is major. If you or your mechanic are a little tricky, you may be able to have it sorted without pulling the top end apart; Sump off and replace the big-end bearings. Messy job, but may be doable!

If it's hammered the crank too much, you're looking at a full reco. Normally, serious crank damage only comes with a seizure, so you may be lucky.

If you're not planning a trip across the Nullabor anytime soon (or somewhere else remote and on your own), and if it's been going sweet for a year now, I honestly wouldn't worry about it. I've driven engines with multiple "patches of looseness" in the bottom end and gotten years out of them.;)

My advice - Spend your cash on a bigger and better stereo, then turn it up! :thumb:

oh rito. coz i was really hoping it would just be that the big end was a little loose and would just need a quick tighten up.
its not really bothering me heaps, but just about every1 that gets in my car, is like 'is there sumfin wrong with ur engine?'
but ohwel, ill just keep driving it around, and if it breaks that will give me a good excuse 4 a bigger engine.

if it's a big end it aint that bigger job if the crank is ok... if you can get the sump off in the car it wouldent be to difficult! inspect crank for damage if it aint to bad eg: no big gouges! give it a good linish with scotch bright install a new bearing set and put it back togeather! IMO i would rather my car be reliable and not have to worry about it when ever i drove some where! what engine is it?

its a 22r, 2.4l petrol. as far as i know the engine is running fine. hasnt changed in the year i hav had it.
but yea, i would like 2 know what it is and get it fixed, coz in the end it is about having a reliable car.
hopefully i can save up some money (goin to bali doesnt help), and give her the love she needs.

your a mechanic... its pritty straight foward job if the crank is ok. and it wont be all that expensive for a set of bearings and a sump gasket!
