I have a 2002 100 series V8 that is on gas. It back fired & broke the air filter box. I then discovered it should have had a injection system on it, rather than a carby style, hence the large amount of gas in the manifold and air intake for it to go boom. The probable reason it backfired is the valves need redoing! I've been quoated about 2k for parts & 2k for labour, which i guess will end up being close to 5 grand. On top of that toyota wants $1200 for a new air box (highway robbery). Then add $3500 for a correct gas system, so it performs how it should & its getting rediculous. Its only got 270000 k's on it. I thought it would have lasted longer. Must be getting closer / cheaper to just putting in a second hand motor. Question is, who good at redoing valves on these motors & where can i get a cheaper air box other than ringing a heep of wreckers? Any other ideas on getting it back on the road a bit cheaper?

Hi, I have the same car as you and I hope ( fingers crossed) that it never plays up. It seems that at some stage it has had a back fire because the air box has been plastic welded and cable tied back together. My car only has 90k and is running fine with the same system that you have. Only prob we find is that its hard to start sometimes when its hot, otherwise is all good.

Thanks for your reply Justcruzin. It seems these V8's have a habit of backfiring even when not on gas! Impossible to get a new airbox from wreckers as they go out a quick as they come in. So mines getting plastic welded too.
