hi all. this post makes for some interesting reading. i am a 1st timer going beach driving this weekend with couple other 4wds (own a mazda b2600). was wondering if anyone had any basic tips (apart from buying another 4wd lol) eg tyre pressures, checklists, tips or whatever. thanks heaps!!

drop your presures to about 24psi and select 4wd have some recovery gear like a snatch strap and you will need a compressor if a servo is not close when yoo come off the beach

basically what taz said, keep your thumbs out of the wheel. Keep a tight grip on the wheel when your in wheel tracks with soft sand, and try to make your wheels arent turned full lock but your driving straight :-X Oh, and keep an eye on the tide ;)

Make sure your hubs are locked in, if you get bogged try dropping tyre pressure to 18 (even 15), when you stop try to face down hill for easier re-start, stay out of the water (even though it might be fun you cannot see the soft spots), follow someone else's tracks - and have fun !
LOL i'm reading this too!! ;) i'm going to Stocko next weekend for the first time too!! never done beach driving before :o

You need HiluxV8 to tell you wat he does. Then do the opposite, coz he seems to get stuck :P :P

Back on topic. Make sure u go on the beach with a full tank. IF u go on with 1/3 you wont be comming off again, and Whatch your temp, cos the 4wd is working harder, using more fuel etc etc....
just have fun, and whatch what u do ;)

I have found that I use over 1/2 tank (about 40litres) to travel full length of stockton & back with a bit of playing in the dunes.
Engine temps are critical, as the vehicle will be working very hard.

tyre pressures are the key and momentum follows close behind.. No momentum mean tyres spin and thus digging yourself into a bog..
have a blast..

thanks boys for those funny comments ;D.i do heaps of beach driving and have only been stuck once(read reddos post).i run 15psi in my tyres on the beach and find it's just right. ;D
Dont turn to fast with low pressures and have a ball ;)

Keep ya thumbs out of the wheel cause if it flicks arond the spokes can break ya thumbs, park facing down hill where possible and when stopping try and coast to a stop rather than using the brakes. cross washouts at a slow speed cause sure as one will be deeper than the last 20 you crossed and rip ya front end out when ya hit it.
at Stocko i ran 16psi and after driving around in H4 like it was suggested, i changed to L4 and used 3rd 4th and 5th, instead of H4 1st and 2nd...... worked far better. I used roughly half a tank, i think mostly because i spent a good part of the day in high range....... as they say, you learn as you go :) We only went as far south as the wreck and as fr north as Tin City..... played around in the dunes around the tank trap for a couple of hours.

To drive out of ruts take your foot off the go pedal turn then re-apply acceleration and the front end should pop out and the rear should follow.

LMAO that's exactly what i was thinking when i read the subject heading ;D
i have the same belief as RoeDao, i engage in L4 as i believe it gives you a better range through the gears instead of maybe sitting in 1 or 2 gears in H4, i think it makes it a little easier on the runnuing gear, just my thoughts.
Above all take it easy with the right boot and try not to change gears in the soft stuff you will loose momentum FAST, oh and have a ball ;)

You know it Scotty :-*
Jus wanted to add somethin bout fuel usage on sand. I have done heaps an heaps of sand drivin but went to fraser for a week for the first time and was surprised how much fuel it used, guess you dont notice as much when doing day trips to beaches etc but prado V6 got about 30ltr/100km when travelling on the soft inland tracks.Would be easy to run outta fuel if not careful at that rate
sell the mazda and get a real truck!

WA = sand. No suprise there, but i have seen a couple of 4b's roll the tyre from the rim when going across deeper wheel ruts in the sand a little bit too hard (bounces the bead and the low pressure doesn't reseat it propoerly, hence ...) Sometimes you have to excercise a little bit of speed control, or, get some spare changing practise in .

mate just remember you get 100 points for every fisherman you hit, 50 points for his woman, 25 points for kids, and if they drive a cop car, mate you've had a good day,

We all start somewhere loz and no matter what brand it is he will have heaps of fun in it.
I still have my first 4by, a well prepped 87 Triton single cab and thats got me to some great places. I'd keep it but I need the dosh for mods to the Deo
IYO loz, what defines a real truck?
The only downside of beach drivin Barra is cleaning out and washing off the sand afterwards. Enjoy your ride mate

biggest tip, straight up and straight down the dunes... reverse don't turn around if you don't make the top.
i've seen a 75 series do a 2 and a 1/2 times flip with a double pike ;D :o

Get some tyre deflators, and a compressor.
Dont have to spend big bucks.
Dont be scared to deflate down to 8psi if you need to.
Just go easy on low pressures.

Didn't read all the other posts but my tip would be don't drive with your eyes shut.
Seriously though, most often it's not about the equipment you have but about the amount grey matter used.
biggest tip - don't drive / think with your d**k. So many guys come unstuck trying to show off

yeah i have done lots of 4wheelin but never sand, but my advice if freinds do something outrageous and you are concerned DONT DO IT, i would rather have my truck still at the end of the day, i have seen this happen and it has happened to me when everybody shows off,and you follow, and disaster strikes.lots of things can happen in sand and some of them are not good, so have a good time but dont let peer pressure get in the way of common sense.
have fun!
Work hard and be nice to your mother ;D
And don't touch your brake pedal, if u want to stop take your foot off the go pedal ;)

try taking a tide guide and a spare jerry if youve only got a standard tank.

After you get back you have to give it a real good wash, and i mean really good. Its amazing where you can get sand in your vehicle. I usually take it to carlovers and spend a good $30 and use high power and get into every nook and cranny imaginable. Before u take it would be wise to crawl under the vehichle and have a look, the IFS has heaps of areas where sand can build up which isnt visible from a standing point of view. I drive a b2600 aswell and have been on Moreton Island bout 3 times and after each time i seem to find new places where i collect sand. The chassis rails for me seem to get the most sand. There are a few holes in them and fkn somehow i'd get handfulls of sand in there. I usually get the hose and put it in the holes and full power, then you can actually see the amount of sand that exits the lower holes, and do this from both ends of the chassis rails.
After about few minutes you can see the change in water colour, from murky to clear, then you usually have had removed most of the sand. Definately a must
Option 1- "Get out now" beach driving is bloody adictive....
Option 2 - Keep the Bravo, mine was a great truck for family 4x4ing, by that i mean going where "mother" would let u take her and the kids off road......, take extra fuel for the B2600 they love a drink once u pull the front legs in....
