Yes I do have plans to fit a 3" exhaust and a 'chip'. Just got to wait for the dollars to be saved up and figure out which products suit.
There's a local 4WD mag here in WA called 'Western 4WDer'. The editor of the mag has V8 79 series, fitted a 3" exhaust (taipan I think) and trialed a few different ECU interceptor chip units on it. The steinbaur (spelling??), TUnit and DPChip. I think from memory they all gave similar results, but the steinbaur was too expensive (need 2 units to cater for the 8 cylinders), and the DPChip wasn't as adjustable as the TUnit he stayed with. There was articles with dyno charts, etc spread out over 4 issues or so. Made for interesting reading anyhow.

Honistly, It has'nt got as much power as the old jigger but it does'nt have a chip like my old one did, everything else is the same similar fuel usage, handeld a little differnt with the wheel track being wider in the front but no big deal, but i am impressed with its torque for a standard motor they have plenty of go..... cant wait 2 chip it!!!!!!!!

No problem, glad to help.
Just put on a 3" exhaust a few days ago as well. (Local WA manufacture, bolt on mandrel bend mild steel, turbo back, no large muffler). Sounds nice :-). Does rev free'er than before. No dyno or anything, but does feel livelier on the 'seat of the pants dyno'.
Plus without the '44gallon drum muffler' under there any more, there's all this extra space. Wonder if I can fit an extra water tank or something in that space.
Chip will have to wait till the next payday probably.

Guys, just bought 07 GXL VDJ70R. Pics were on carsales.com but now removed so I was to slow to post them up. Presently has got 3" zorst, Shelley Ind. tray, sandgrabber floor mats, gen. Toyota sheepskin seatcovers, ARB deluxe bar & 36000ks. At the moment it is getting airlockers fitted, next week 5" lift & 315/75/16 mtz on 16x8 rims. Now all I have to do is get it from Brisbane to WA.

After putting on a Taipan exhaust, he trailed the Steinbauer, TUnit and Diesel Power chips. Now this is all from memory, so do check out the magazine articles to confirm but....
- The exhaust on it's own didn't give much more power, but smoothed
things out on the dyno charts. (ie: less dips/rises, smoother power and
torque curves).
- Steinbauer unit was expensive, as two needed for the V8. Had a minor
cold start issue (can't remember what it was though). Cost was over 2K
- TUnit gave similar power/torque increases to the Steinbauer, but
obviously cheaper as only a single unit required. Cost about 1.2K
- Diesel Power had to be turned up to full to get same power/torque as
TUnit on its middle setting (5 out of 9). Cheaper though, about 1K
The last article he went back to the TUnit (his preferred option) and tried different settings on it (the user settable dial from 1 - 9) to see how it affected fuel economy. His conclusion was basically to tune the vehicle for power, but then drive it for economy (ie: drive smothly, don't plant the foot and use all the new power, short shift gears, etc) to get the best economy.
Again, double check with the Western 4WDer articles in case I've remembered something wrong - a definite possibility.
I ended up putting in the exhaust (which is a 'Manta' brand bolt on I should have mentioned). I haven't had it on a dyno, so all by the 'seat of the pants dyno'. The exhaust did make it seem a little smoother, but no noticeable power increase. Interestingly though the fuel economy improved from about 13.7L/100km down to about 13.2L/100km on my regular home-to-work run on the Roe Hwy (not a lot of stop start).
I installed the DPChip after a few weeks (cost $1.3K). Simple to plug in myself. The install took about 10 min. It has 7 user selectable settings, with the default being on 4. After speaking to the suppliers, and informing them of the exhaust, they reccomended moving it up a notch to position 5 or 6 which I did. Definitely a noticable increase in power.
Again interestingly the fuel economy improved slightly to 13.0L/100km on the same run. If I use too much righ foot, it returns into the low 13's, but I'm pretty happy. Definitely a lot better to drive now.
PS: I was looking at a TUnit as Nick found the best bang-for-your buck of those he tested on his TD V8 cruiser. One WA supplier had no interest ("Oh, I guess I can order one in for you if you want"), and another wouldn't supply it without doing a tune on a laptop. When asked what dyno he used, etc I was told he didn't use one. I then asked what/how he tunes it without a dyno, and was told if I didn't like the way he did things not to bother - so I didn't.

Fourbys doing the work, mostly Superior Eng. gear.
Adjustable Tuff Dogs,
5" springs,
Superior dropped radius arms,
Superior panhard,
7 leaf 'articultion' rear springs, (articulation & leaves in same sentence??)
Superior ex. shackles,
Brake prop. valve extension,
few other bits & pieces as well.
Should be done by Monday 22nd. Then another 3 or so weeks to get it to Perth. Then drive home after that (another 1600 ks).
Can PM you the quote if you like.

Thanks again John. Where did you get your DP unit from? I haven't shopped around much for the various units yet, but WA Automotive Specialists in Balcatta have quoted $1430 for a DP.....they also do a power package for $2900 which includes the DP unit, a mandrel bent 3" exhaust (including dump pipe) and full set-up on their dyno. United Fuel Injection in Rivervale recommended a Rapid unit at $1550. Mettams quoted about $1500 for a 3" system, but not including the dump pipe....about another $600!!! Anyhow, I'll keep sniffing around and see what I can come up with.

nice job LC70
cant wait to buy my 79 cab chassis ( but i think i will get the petrol engine 4.5 efi)
we have them in the middle east markets, although i live in Jordan and our dealer doesnt get any 70 series (the assho...)
but i will get mine from Saudi Arabia or Egypt both are very close to Jordan.
question please LC70:
doesnt your 33" tyres rub at any point with only coil spacers front and wheel spacers at back?
Naghotch,
The tyres do not rub anywhere that i can see. I have them mounted on 16x8 100 series GXL live axle steel rims and they work fine with standard suspension. Done a few trips with them now and nil dramas at all.

Now there are some nice set up rigs, would lke to see some more wagons, Ive been tossing up the idea of doing a dual cab/tray conversion to a 76 wagon. Has anyone seen or done something similar yet?
cheers,
JJ
Found these a while back, not sure where it was now. Based on the 76 wagon. This set up but maybe on the 78 or 79 wheelbase would be better. At least some of the tray would be over a bit more of the rear axle.

2007 VDJ79R GXL
When I bought it last month it came pretty much standard except for the bar, lambswool seat covers & sandgrabber floor mats & 3" Taipan exhaust. 36000 ks.
I had fitted as follows-
315/75/16 MT MTZs on 16x8 Dynamic rims,
5" Dobinsons coils & raised rear Allset springs with ex. Superior shackles,
Adjustable Tough Dogs all round,
Superior dropped radius arms,
Airlockers f & r.
Am waiting on a different bar so I can fit my highmount, (this one for sale). Have also ordered the steel for the canopy I want to make.
Will have to get a better steering stabiliser though.
Drove it home from Perth on the weekend, 1600ks & it drove really good. Should be getting it dirty this weekend. http://www.4wdmonthly.com.au/forum/images/icons/icon10.gif

Hi mate.
I have a Beaudesert 3in mandrel bent Exhaust, they are in QLD. i highly recommend them & i am pritty sure they deliver Aust wide. it is a straight up fit.
start at the tail pipe unbolt old one all the way to dump pipe. then its just reverse, dump pipe to the tail pipe.
they do stainless & aluminized steel
good luck

This is my upgrade from a 1992 75 series ute that I drove for 16 years..... loving it!!
Just the basics so far. Bullbar, Lightforce 240s, Warn 9.5 winch, Roofrack, Outback draws, ParaDrive seats.
Suspension, LR tank and 3inch Beaudesert exhaust all go on next week.

Reading in a diffrent 4wd mag, that in late 2009 or early 2010, the 70 Series will recieve an upgrade with a new dash which will include airbags.
We wait and see what they do.

Hi Guys,
I bought a 3 inch mandrell bent system for my cab chassis and the flange on the pipe is hitting my cab when i go over bumps or corrigations. has any one had this problem before? is it normal and something that i have to put up with? any help or advice would be much appreciated.

I have a 76 series GXL on order due late September. Toyota rang me Friday to let me know that in august the new superseeded 70 series will be released and it will have dual airbags. This means a completely new dash layout. ARB suspect it will be similar to the hilux dash. If anyone else has any more infor on the changes pls let me know.
cheers

Can't wait to get myself one of these wagons!!!!!!!!!! and by the look of it by the time I do there will be a few half decent second hand examples around with all the trimmings!! Ahhh my 5 year plan...house with a garage and a 76 series wagon haha
When did they change the interior? Toyota website shows a new interior! The previous mag reviews criticise the 80's interior. The new one looks pretty good. Not over the top but neat.
