View Full Version : Supercharge or V8?
I am just after a bit more perormance but also trying to improve fuel ecconomy, I know the two don't normally go together but I guess the 2 options I am considering are to go to a chev v8 or to supercharge the existing 4.5. I prefer supercharging to turbo for the low down torque of the supercharger but a v8 would be the same. At the moment the best i get is about 20 liters per hundered, the 4wd has roof rack and steel bars front and back and winch so is carrying a fair bit of extra weight. We don't use the 4wd as a daily runabout just mainly for 4wd'ing and touring. I also have to think of making it easy to get parts if something should happen in a remote location so keeping it more toyota would probably make that a bit easier. Cost wise I think the supercharger would be cheaper and definately easier to fit but i havn't been able to find anyone who has had one fitted so am just after opinions or experiance if any one knows of a supercharged 80 series.
Here is sort of what i was thinking of Toyota 4.5 Litre 79/100 Series Landcruiser Supercharger Kit (http://www.bulletcars.com/superchargers/toyota/toyota-4.5-litre-100-series-landcruiser-supercharger-system.html)

I personally would go for the supercharger option purely for the ease of fitment and significant power increase. Engine conversions are time consuming and will more than likely cost the same or more than the supercharger kit. The best thing with the supercharger is if it packs up you can just take the belt off and keep using your vehicle. You can also run gas on a supercharged motor so that can help with the fuel consumption cost.
The only thing that would deter me from the supercharger would be if my vehicle had excessive kms on the clock as you may be up for a full rebuild as well which will be costly.
Check out LCengineering and Alpine developments in the States for supercharger kits. You may find their kits to be alot cheaper.

I looked at exactly this scenario for my 4.5 P Auto 105.
I actually visited Bullet Cars and had a good talk with the guys there, as well as mapping the power and torque curves for the Bullet SuperCharger, 6.5 Chevy Diesel, and Gen 3 conversion. The Gen 3 came out in front, when I considered my needs. Better rev range than the diesel, flatter fatter torque curve, and better all round figures than the Bullet option.
I spent 3 months researching this, and in the end went for a Gen 3, and then put a PWR positive displacement supercharger on that.
I am left with a car that has 360Kw and 635 Nm at the flywheel, and gave me 16 Litres / 100K's on highway on a recent Simpson Desert trip. It flies.
Marks Adaptors in Dandneong did the conversion, and has a complete kit for the car now.
I thought that the Bullet Cars supercharger option was very good value for money, and although it promised very good improvements, I opted for the Gen 3 though because the V8 was a better all round proposition than a 6.
At the risk of getting barred from the forum, 4*4 Australia, November edition, has a 4 page feature on the car, which will give you some idea of how it finished up.
With the 4.5P I was getting 81kw across all four wheels, now I have 222kw.
Hope that this helps.

Thanks for the replies. Hey jim if you dont mind me asking about how much did it wind up costing for the conversion (ballpark will do) and did you use a new gen3 or one out of a wreck and how many gearboxes/diffs have you been through?

G'Day Pdr, I run the Bullet S/C in my 105 series Auto with a chip & exhaust.....In a word FANTASTIC.... average 18ltr/100 open rd with loades of extra weight / auto & 33'' M/t's and driving conservatively. goes to 21ltr/100 towing camper 1.1 Ton. Not the most economical but a joy to drive & the look on others motorists faces when we round them up & disapear over the hill is a mastercard moment.
Cheers

As im new to 4wding, but not LS1 v8's, i would say go the LS1, or maybe crate 6litre (L98 VE commodore) motor. Massive horsepower to be gained from these engines in just a mafless tune state. 270rwkw (About 360rwhp) can be made from these L98 motors without any internal mods. All you need is a decent exhaust and cold air intake and a dyno tune, and your away.
I guess as always, whats your budget ?
Dan
I reconed about 10-12gs would cover it but to go ls1 ,I don't know if it would. I had thought if I could get away with just a supercharger on the existing motor but I do like the sound of a v8 and I ould rather have fun with my old 80 than spend big dollars on a standard new rig. That way I also don't have to worry about getting it scratched or dented.
