hey all my old man has recently got ahold of a troopie campervan. now when he is off road the thing seems to have issues when going back to 2wd in that he cant get the lever out of 4wd. it took about 20 minutes last time and required a fair amount of force to do so which seems abnormal. he tried the usual reverse trick and things like that but it doesnt come out.
is there something in the transfer causing this abnormal movement or a linkage or something broken as its rather frustrating and he wants it fixed lol.
anybody else encountered this problem before and how can it be fixed
cheers in advance

From my experience, its just landcruisers. My old 75 used to have dramas, my brother has owned a few 75s and they did it as well. I used to shift mine back into 2H and put it in reverse and just drop the clutch repeatedly, as if i was trying to jolt the drive line (if it was on dirt surface, i wouldnt recomend doing it on bitumen). That used to work most of the time, or try changing out "on the fly" and back on and off on the throttle will moving forward.

Try driving and after 100m change out while still driving, if it dont work the 1st time just try again, around 20km/hr in 2nd is a good speed. just be patient and gentle, and it will change. Anyway give it a go it works on my uncles 70 and my 75 series.

I dont have a landcruiser but my 4runner does the same thing some times..

like the others said.. i usually just coast along realy slow and change while moving.. if you keep some steady pressure on it.. it will just fall into place while your coasting along.

ok so basically have it in 4h then just cruising along about 20km or less just gently ease it into 2h when coasting so clutch in and it should change alrite il give it a go. so its pretty much just a common toyota fault really.

Yep, same with my old girl. Mine seems to shift after moving forward a bit. It's a pain in the arse but I'll live with it.

I'm jealous of you all, I couldn't get mine into 4wd for about a year. Certainly learnt a bit about positioning a vehicle though. :D
I had this problem when I first got mine, yeah as above, it should work, just drive back and forth and stuff till it works.

I backup what Walt says, if you're on dirt, try dropping the clutch to get your wheels to spin a bit to release any built-up windup.

This must be a problem that affects the manual transfers, my middy was a vacuum transfer and i've never had a problem selecting or de-selecting low range.

Yeah mate alot of the work 75 series do it and i just jump on and off the accelerator while pushing into 2H and they always pop in.

Cheers
