hey guys! im relatively new to the forum as i am looking to get into the 4wd scene and just wanting some much needed advice on what to do.

Here's the story!

Found a short wheel base 89 GQ

its massive! 5 inche's suspension lift, 2 inches of body lift, 38 inch Claws, winch, 7 spotties, uhf, everything adjustable underneath!

only dilemma i have is that its a 4.2 petrol engine. and im really undecided as to what to do.

Is the 4.2 petrol a good engine or is it a heap of sh!t like my bloody v8 ute haha

any advice would be greatly appreciated guys!

Sounds like a nice car,
My mate has a 88 Gq Patrol long wheel base. with the 4.2L
and he loves it!! i have to admit it sounds awesome, he has put extractors on it and a sports exhaust so yeah it sounds like a racing car but it hasn't let him down, fuel economy is what you would expect from a 4.2l straight 6 have it has a lot of high end power.
its great fun to drive and can pull just about anything.
The only problem he has had is the tappets come lose so every couple of months he gets them adjusted or its misses
But you have to remember its a 20 year old car. but its a beauty!
I think you should get it! (if you have the money for petrol)

Good strong team of horses there. Gas is good cause they like to be watered a bit.

im going to look at it tonight.. very nervous haha
well the cost of petrol wont be too much of an issue because im going to get myself a lil buzz box run around car.. thinkin a dato 120 y or something that runs off the smell of an oily rag!

i think gas would pretty much be a definate to add to the beast if i were to purchase it...
would the gas conversion give the car less power while running on gas or would be be relatively the same???

is there any other problems with the 4.2 petrol engine or just the tappets??
its got 250,000km's on it so im hoping that, thats not many for that engine.. but i guess 250,000 isn't many for a car that old.. considering my ute is a 2001 and its got 124,000 on it haha

anyway thanks for the advice guys :)

i got a 4.2 and apart from the pretty average fuel economy which ive just lived with. got a bit of up and go and a pretty strong motor. as said apart from the tappets i cant fault mine at all mines got just under 230000 on it atm and still going like new. as long as its looked after as in serviced pretty regularly they are good for around 500000 pretty safely.
