Wat is it? Wats it do?
Wat is it? Wats it do?
it's basically a thermometer..... i want to be able to monitor EGT under load.... that way i can fiddle a little with the injector pump without destroying the turbo.

:'( maybe a digital readout one will be cheaper?

hey Roedao, just a thought but get your intercooler fitted, advance your pump timming and give a bit more fuel. book it in a dyno place and let them fine tune the dao.eg monitor EGT.might save u some $$$$$$$

if i got a front mounted intercooler off eBay and fitted it myself, then got it dyno tuned, it would probably cost the same as the guage ::)

Is your motor only worth $290 to repair / replace ???

The Pyrometer comes in handy when tuning a Deisel because the more fuel you add the hotter it gets and the more grunt you get.
By using a Pyrometer (Exhaust Temp Gauge) you can increase you power output without cooking anything. You can also use it as a good tool as to when to back off in the bush.
$290 is a good price for the VDO kit.

thats still mighty 'spensive!! :-X I would still like to get one..... maybe later in the year.

doesnt just tell you if there is too much fuel going in, if the timing is out it will also tell you.
Bottom line is a turbo will only handle so much heat and the pyro will tell you what it happening. Idealy it should be between engine and turbo but on most vehicles there is no provision for it there.

on mine there looks like there is a provision for it.... there is a blank in the exhaust manifold back between number 3 and 4 cylinder....... that would be a good place for one.......... i'll get a pic later

does any body know what temp exhaust should be at as mine is at 620 deg.is this about right?

dont know what your car is 4X? but most turbos seem to handle 700 + but dont quote me. Ring a fuel injection mob or the turbo manufacturer. Remember a pyro after the turbo will register slightly lower than actual exhaust gas temp, especially on a watercooled turbo, but oil also removes heat

somebody once said on this forum in another thread that 600 degrees is about the limit for EGT..... i don't know how right it was... you need to get into the ear of an expert i think

i had it done when i got the turbo modified 620 deg but since then i opened the fuel a tiny bit more

Hi guys, wouldn't go much above 600 deg C on the exhaust temp. Most On-highway trucks peak at around the 600 mark & these babies are punching out 600HP. What you need to be aware of is that the cylinder temps are higher than what you see after the turbo.
Talking of turbo's, exaust temps etc, remeber that this works the oil hard, so on the jap diesels it's good practice to change your oil at 5000 km intervals & use the best diesel oil you can afford. The latest API rating is CI which the likes of Delo 400 meets.

from what i undersdand, when you open the fuel up, you need to adjust the pump timing as well.... i'm hoping to get my intercooler fitted today....... then get it booked in to be retuned. I don't want to risk blowin it up.

speakin of trucks....... someone told me that a truck wrecker would be a good place to get a pyrometer from...... might have to try one.

Roe, when I was going to turbo my V6 I had one of these lined up new for around $150. It was from some Aircraft guage site, but I can't find the site or any info I thought I had on it.
I'll keep looking and hopefully I find it for you.

The real benefit of a pyrometer is to measure exhaust gas temps at the point where it really matters - that is, at the tops of the pistons. When I had the intercooler/turbo system set up on my 105 Cruiser, using a 4WD dyno, the bloke who did it said that in the interests of longevity he recommended a max EGT of 500 C under full load for the 1HZ enginel. Because I do a lot of my travel here in the West with a full load on board and in very high temp conditions, I had mine set up at about 12 psi boost and a fuel setting to generate a max EGT of about 475 C - this is enough to give about 130 kw and 420 nm, with a 3" exhaust. But if you operate a lot under heavy load and hot conditions a pyrometer can be very useful in telling you when to back off a bit to get the EGT down and save yourself a burnt piston or two.

this is what i want to achieve...... i'm going to get it tuned for maximum performance (if possible) and i would like to be able to keep an eye on it. When i'm sitting on 100kph it runs not much under full boost...... and although i don't carry much weight, except for me ::) And i don't do much distance travelling now i have the Statesman....... i only travel to where i'm going fourby'n.

Tony, i just brought a pyrometer, hooked it all up, well i though i did.... am i supposed to get some sought of reading on the gauge when the ute is stationary reving say about 1200> 1500 rpm, the needle did not seem to move, the gauge is a VDO, it has 4 conectors on the back of it. 2 are for the temp sender, and the other 2 is + ignition and - ground,
cheers

hey roedao the vdo price you quoted is only for the guage you also have to buy a thermocoupler costing about $300.00 from repco , as you know my intercooler is in and running have not touched the fuel only the wastegate and im happy with the gains cheers stormpatrol

the price quoted to me was for the kit.... which included everything.... so he told me anyway. I could always hold him to that quote ;) I'm going to wait for tax time and get one then. along with a heap of other shite i want :-X geez this money is going a long way!! The guy that dyno tuned it didn't use a EGT monitor...... apparently he has been tuning racing cars and shit for years.......... he did it watching the dyno and the amount of black smoke under load and full boost..... i trust him to get it right.... if not, he will be paying for a new motor ;D
