After recently getting stuck in tha middle of some bog holes due to water in my dizzy.. i think its about time it got my attention to do something about it.
Would like to hear some ideas on how to go about it..

My zook used to suffer from water on the leads and dizzy but after i swapped the leads to a newer set it hardly ever affects em. The plugs on the end of the leads have to be a good tight fit too or else the steam and water will get in there and stop progress. Lanolin or WD40etc sprayed on your dizzy and leads will stop the water too.
Is there an o-ring under the cap to seal it? That might need replacing too.

oh cheers. well just had a fully rebuilt motor on it, inc. new dizzy, so im asuming the o-ring would be fine. but the leads thing makes sence as it only has a cheap set of champion leads on it.
one of the guys on my last trip suggested making a little shield sorta thing round tha dizzy to stop that initial splash of water, might give that ago as well..
thanks heaps for your advice

a points distributor has a breather hole on the housing base, which lets water in. you cant just block or plug it as it does need to breath....You can tap a barb into it and run a vacumn line up high to breath...
efi distributors are easier, most dont have a breather in the base they have one in the cap...just run a breather line up high ( still check the dist housing but if the cap has one then you can block it..
On some points distributors there are efi equivalent so the aftermarket caps have a breather that may be blocked off...open it up and block the one on the dizzy
with all methods you can also remove the cap and replace with a small bead of silicone to seal..remember also to seal the slide in insulation block that the wires go through the dizzy body!

I've also been told of some type of grease that can be put around the lead-plugs and distributor cap to help seal against water but I'm not to sure on what it is or if it exists.

You are right Kitika, the stuff is called di-electric grease, good luck finding it tho! you can use LMM grease as it is not electrically conductive, but the above is better.
As Yoda said, try to run the breather into the car or run it into ya aircleaner or snorkel. On the flip side you can pump air into the dizzy with a compressor ( i used a super cheap jobbie with a screw in connection) and then pump a couple of PSI into it, but make sure you still seal the dizzy up ( silicone around the bottom of the cap) and also pull a bit of inner tube over the cap and cable tie it around the cap and also around all the leads.
I did the inner tube thing by putting 1 cable tie at the bottom of the leads around the tube then stick a bit of that LMM grease in the 'pocket' and a cable tie at the top, and then a couple in the middle to spread it all out inside the pocket, and that will stop the water running down the leads to the top of the cap.
Also get 90 degree cap ends on the leads as this will also help stop the water running down into the leads;)
The water will not bother the electrical system as much as steam will, if you can stop steam ingress you will be 98% of the way there!
Good luck, it's a bit of a black art.

i met a guy at lcmp who put denso tape around his dizzy and leads to protect against water and steam. worked quite well and was ny on submursible. bit of a messy thing but if you dont have to touch them all the time, could be worth a go.

just surfing the net and seen this
News Plastidip Products,Spray on Liquid Electrical Tape New Product easy to use (http://www.plastidip.net.au/index.php?module=Website&action=Text&content=1158804541171-1503)
does anyone think it'll be worth a go?

cheers guys.. after chasing up some new leads at burson, tha guy there also menchained that idea of di-electric grease, sounds plausible to me...
i've already ran all breather's into the air cleaner, so hopefully no problems there. just waiting for these leads to come in, then a good grease an silicon job might just do tha trick..
cheers heaps guys:thumb:

years ago at "mudbash" people were using rubber gloves to seal up the dizzy, worked well for the 4 cylinder engines.
di-electric paste - my dad was just put onto this for his RV, fixed an intermittent bad electrical joint for a few days but didn't really solve the problem.
like the idea of a splash guard. I'm seriously looking to seal up as much as possible to keep the mud out, protect the alternator & general electrics from mud as well.

Here is a dodgy pic of my water shield for my dizzy,
http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h207/et4wd/2005_1026Poser-Shots0002.jpg
Its up the front there, inside the tube between the 2 cable ties is a bit of LMM grease to do 2 things, 1: stop the water traveling down the leads and 2: to stop then shorting each other out, it works wicked! and with the factory limiter removed has seen bursts of 5200rpm with no missing in the water!
Have Fun,
Steve.
