View Full Version : Thirsty 1HD-FTE

I have a 2001 Landcrusier 100 with the 1HD-FTE motor, and since the 200k service (5K ago) the old girl has started beng very thirsty, and the effect is starting to hurt the old hip pocket with fuel prices the way they are. Apart from 32" BFG AT's, she is pretty stock standard.
I thought this was pretty early to be considering getting injectors done. Is there anything else that I should look at first?
I have also been considering going a 3" exhaust and Safari DTronic to give the truck a bit more grunt for towing etc. These could mask the problem for a while so I wanted to sort out the fuel economy issues first.
Cheers

have you noticed any more blakc smoke than normal cause if so then that could mean your injectors are needing a clean/ new tips but i couldnt see the diesil pump needing doing up cuase its only done 205000ks so i would say injectors and yer the exhaust is a good idea for your car it will help make it pull heaps better
hope this helps

If it has only started happening after a service I would start by looking at what they have done...
Being diesel a service consists of changing oil and oil filter and air filter.. the only other filter that needs replacing is the fuel filter and that only needs to be done every now and then (I think it is around 20k under normal conditions but don't quote me on that as I just change mine every now and then for the sake of it)
A blocked air filter will definitely cause excess fuel consumption so throw in a new one and see if it makes a difference.. other than that if they have used the wrong grade of oil it MAY cause it to burn more oil and gum the injectors etc... so do a change of oil and filter too.
I wouldn't think they would have been in playing with fuel pump timing during the service but it may pay to ask the question as if your pump timing is off then you will use more juice too...
Then we get to exhaust.. have you knocked it to cause any restriction points? check it!
Snorkel or air intake under front guard may be blocked.. again check them!
Your economy shouldn't just go down hill because of a service so it sounds suss to me.. but it could simply be that you are buying crap fuel and getting nowhere near the milage you should be getting... there is heaps of posts around where people have changed fuel and their economy has changed for better or worse...
It is a bit of hit and miss but before you go spending good $$ on exhausts etc do the basic checks first.
cheers
