Hi all!

Anyone know anything about the 4.4L V8 that came in some Range Rovers?

Just wanting to know what they are like as far as performance and strength goes. Don't care too much about economy, but if I can get it to about 220 - 250kw without too many dramas, then off it goes to Mr Makeitgofast. ;D

Thanks Micka

Not a range rover expert but i thought that the 4.4 was sourced from the leyland P76

Yep the current one is BMW about to be replaced by a Jaguar V8, as Ford own both Jag & Land Rover now.

But the old ones were transplanted from the Leyland P76. I think the 4.4 was virtually identical to the 3.5, except it had a higher block for its longer stroke.

I've had 3 of the old P76 V8 engines, had them in my old Kombi... it was a beast. Anyway the V is slightly taller than the Rover V8 and needs an adapter to run a Rover manifold. Mine had the Rover Manifold with a 4 barrel Holley on it and a few other bits and pieces. The all alloy engine is about 100kg less than a Holden 5.0lt and puts out about 190hp and 300nm (from memory) in stock form. With the holley and a few other bits and pieces mine had about 230hp. I still have one lying around somewhere with Buick heads on it but one buggered cylinder where it lost the rings. This engine went through hell as it was my test mule and would easily wheelstand the Kombi.

In my opinion they're a great engine and parts can still be had from Repco and British Auto Spares (Padstow)

Cheers
Steve

Hi guys thought you might like to know, the 3.5 was derived from the Buick family of engines and was adapted for use in the rover cars as early as the late 60,s from this then came the de-tuned version we saw in the rangie and later adapted for the P76 by Ausie leyland.

One more gem that you may not know the P76 started out life as an Austin 1800 lenghtened and modified to take a 3.5 mounted east - west only 3-4 were built before the 6 proto types that led to the p76.

sorry to hijack the thread :-[

I've driven the 4.4l version of the BMW X5 & that thing goes hard.
Useless offroad, but a nice engine.
