Not that i usually rev my daily this hard on the black stuff, but during a creative merging procedure, noticed that as soon as my car hits 4250 rpm, it dies in the arse. it's an rb30 GQ running the factory carby. thinking thos could be a coil or points issue? if it's coild, can i replace with a bosch HEC715 type coil? have a few of these left over from previous rotor projects.
cheers guys!

Try adjusting/replacing the points and replacing the condenser, the coil is the least likely culprit.
I don't know for sure, but I reckon the HEC715 coil would require too much current to work nicely with points, it's better suited to electronic ignition.
if ur going to muck around with ignition on an RB motor...why not go electronic....you won't have to look too far to find something suitable....any R31-R34 skyline and a host of other late eighties and nineties nissans used the RB in one form or another...

In some cars they are. In patrols, the rb has a carby.
I've got a few bits and pieces together for an efi conversion, inlet, microtech, big throttle body, turbo, gate and manifold, but am still looking for a suitable series two motor to bolt it all to so i can do a straight engine swap.
Just fixing little things to keep her running nice for the time being

is it a hard or expensive thing to do converting the rb30 to efi?? what do you need to do it?

Check the spring loaded contact inside the distributor cap that sits on the top of the rotor button to make sure it is not jammed into the top of the cap. I had this problem on a VL commodore with the RB30 motor and it used to cause a lot of static in my radio and evetually fried the crank angle sensor. When i bought a second hand distributor from the wreckers the cap on it also had the same problem so i am guessing it happens fairly often.
It never caused a miss on the VL but it could cause a problem on a points type ignition where the spark is weaker.

in honesty, to me it sounds more like a fuel problem rather than an ignition problem, i would say that you might have a small slight blockage in either a fula filter or a guaze filter in the fuel line

I first thought it sounded like a fuel starvation problem too, like either a blocked secondary main jet or not getting enough fuel to the carby. Its a bit hard to tell without actually hearing it run

gave it a carby and dizzy clean. Revs clean and easy to 7000rpm again.

i was going to say i think i have heard of problems with the carbys on the rb30s were the secondary chamber doesnt open something to do with a sticky linkage or something but good to hear it all fixed
